I was 15 and got a job at a wholesale florist. My duties included making bouquets, arranging and watering the larger plants on the showroom floor, arranging rock gardens on dollies, and occasional office work(mailings and the like).
When I was 15 I got a job in the local Hallmark store. I absolutely loved it, esp. working the cash register and blowing up the balloons with the helium machine (no, I did not suck the helium, lol). I always felt like I was "playing store", it was fun.
I sold bras and girdles at a downtown Chicago department store. I will never forget the enormously fat lady who wanted to see if a garter belt would fit her. I looked up to see my dad and sister laughing their heads off when I could not get it around her and ended up giving her one end to hold while I took the other and walked around her.
I worked in the college cafeteria in the dish room. My job was to get the food off the plates and dishes so they could go through the dishwasher. The football team liked to put ketchup in those little dishes the cafeteria put fruit in, then they smeared peanut butter around the edges and stacked four or five of the dishes together. When you pulled the stack apart, ketchup would fly everywhere. I got a job in the college library the next year!
I was a deli clerk at Publix grocery store. Believe it or not, I was in charge of serving the rotisserie chickens, chicken fingers, fried chicken, and side dishes. It was pretty gross! I had to use this HUGE meat cleaver and quarter the chickens for customers. Plus, you could nearly kill yourself slipping on grease on the floor. The only reason I did it was because I made an extra $1 an hour than the cashiers. Dumb move!
My first job was as a waitress. I started at a Bobs Big Boy type of place -- on my first day they informed me I needed to wear a hair net. I couldn't handle the idea of that, so I called my Dad on my break and told him to come get me. I went on to waitress at a diner after that, and finally moved into the big leagues where I was a server at a fine dining establishment. The tips were fabulous, especially for a teenager. I put myself through college and grad school waitressing and bartending, and would fall back on it in a heartbeat if I ever had to.
When I was 16, I worked as a salesperson at Lay's Department Store. Can't begin to tell you all the comments I got from the guys in my high school when they found out I worked at a place called "Lay's"!
Originally posted by Gary M I pumped gasoline at a Sinclair gas station when I was 16. That was when I had to wash the windshield, check the oil, water and air in the tires.
Not too long ago, we were headed out of town in our car, and I thought one of the tires was a little low. So, I suggest to DH and instead of going to the self-serve gas place, that we go to the full service station.
While the guy was filling our car, I asked him to check our tires.
So, he walks around the car, leans down, looks at them and says, "They look OK to me."
I answered an ad in the local paper and for what turned out to be selling Kirby Vacum Cleaners.
We had training in a hotel conference room and then after about a week of practicing to sell to our family and close friends, we went out together to sell the Kirbys.
I knew it wasn't for me when I saw the sales manager pushing this little old couple to buy one of these things that they couldn't afford and didn't need.
My first job was wraping silverware at S&S Caftina. I fired in a weeks time. It worked out for the best I end up working for the Chattanooga Lookouts as a runner. I still there at the Lookouts now working as the concession stand Manager.
