White Russian has been brought back to their scoop shops. Road trip? This was my favorite.
Absolutely!!!! Niagara Falls NY here I come!White Russian has been brought back to their scoop shops. Road trip?
I remember thrifty stores-ice cream (when I was a kiddo) was 10 cents for 1 scoop, 20 cents for two-but a triple decker was only a quarterours also had a little lunch counter that sold banana splits-and they often had a 'balloon promotion'-you chose a balloon that they popped to see what price you would pay for your split (never more than the regular price, more often pennies to as much as the highly coveted freebie).
I worked at a swensens while in college-we didn't make our own ice cream though, it was trucked to us in the containers (and ROCK hard).
anyone remember flaming ice cream snowballs? they only sold them around Christmas-they came in a box of 2 or 4 and were round vanilla ice creams balls (about the size of a tennis ball) covered in coconut, and topped with a plastic decoration of holly leaves and berries. they were called 'flaming' b/c the holly berry decoration was a candle holder, and you put the birthday cake type candle that came in the box into it to light. haven't seen these in YEARS.
Yeah, the ice milk was awful. Some "ice creams" are also labeled "frozen dairy dessert". Not sure what the requirement is for that, but I mistakenly bought some and it was horrible.

In recent years, as part of cost-cutting measures since their move from Green Bay, Wisconsin to Unilever's U.S. headquarters in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, Unilever has reformulated many of its flavors with nontraditional, additive ingredients, significantly changing the taste and texture of their desserts as a result. Following similar practices by several of their competitors, and to the consternation of many former customers, Breyers' list of ingredients has expanded to include natural food additives such as tara gum and carob bean gum, artificial additives such as maltodextrin and propylene glycol, and common artificially separated and extracted ingredients such as corn syrup, whey, and others.
Sounds like something that doesn't even meet the labeling standards for "low-fat ice cream". Perhaps it uses some "adjunct" like vegetable oil or no/little cream content.
I found some banter and other stuff about this. Breyer's has modified several of its products to use ingredients that aren't allowed in "ice cream".

Sticky toffee pudding
The next time at the supermarket I checked, and yep, about half of Breyer's flavors are now frozen dairy dessert. When I was a kid, Breyer's was considered the crème de la crème of supermarket ice creams. The top mom & pop corner stores also featured hand-scooped Breyers. Then Breyers quality lessened when it was bought out and transferred from one conglomerate to another. I understand having to keep costs in line to remain at a competitive price point, but this frozen dairy dessert stuff is a low blow.
I blame Nestlé. They're the ones that first decided to drop the standard size from a half gallon to 1.75 and then 1.5 quarts.

My answer will most likely cause a collective "EWWWW..." across the land, but Baskin and Robbins used to (like back in 1978) have a flavor that only came out in the fall. Licorice. And yes, it was black. I loooove licorice and while I realize this sounds really gross, for someone who enjoys licorice, it was delicious!
I also enjoyed their German chocolate. It had coconut and I think almonds all in chocolate ice cream.
My favorite current flavor which I have a very hard time locating is Ben & Jerry's Chubby Hubby. Malt, fudge, pretzels, peanut butter...it's not safe in the house and I refuse to tempt myself right now so no looking. (and please don't come on here and tell me where I can buy it!)![]()
