What was your favorite brand of ice cream no longer made?

Yes, it was Breyer's Cherry Vanilla. It used to be so good years ago,(when it was in the rectangular boxes with a flap), then got somewhat less enjoyable over the past 10 to 15 years, and now it's "frozen dairy dessert." Simply horrible. I didn't notice it's labeling the last time I bought it; otherwise I would have avoided it like the plague. I couldn't even finish the first serving, and threw it all away.

I actually bought some Breyer's last night because it was on sale ($3) at Target. And I got my old standby, which was "natural strawberry". It was still labelled as "ICE CREAM" although about half the other offerings were "FROZEN DAIRY DESSERT". I looked at the ingredient label, and it seemed like the old label I remember they talked about in their commercials, with the exception of "tara gum". I looked it up, and it's a natural extract used as a stabilizer and thickening agent similar in use with carob bean gum or locust bean gum. That itself doesn't bother me. I remember back when I saw the Breyer's commercials that put down the use of ingredients that one couldn't pronounce such as carrageenan, I was thinking this was BS that they were putting down the use of common and safe food ingredients because they sounded mysterious. Even the super premium brands were using these ingredients, but they made for a better product.

Tastes about the same as I remember it from 20 years ago. I never thought it was great, but kind of reliable comfort food.
