Currently at DHS for EMH and was walking past Disney Jr. When I heard the song Blurred Lines blasting from the stereo system. I stopped to listen as I like the song, and quickly realized that they did NOT edit the song from the radio version down to something a bit more child friendly.

I am not a prude by any stretch, but I don't think having the line "the way you grab me/must wanna get nasty" blasting from the front of an attraction designed for the preschool crowd is appropriate.

I'm convinced that most people don't truly listen to lyrics of pop songs. I'm with you on this song being a questionable selection for the location.

Yikes! I'll agree; poor choice of music because the lyrics are inappropriate for little ones. I'm not familiar with the song, but I don't even want my 10 year old to hear that. Disney needs to think of these things. Kind of surprised they played that.

We have a local water park and my daughter is still little enough to enjoy the kiddie section. As I was sitting in the water, watching children go down an elephant slide in 1 ft of water, "Paul Revere" Beastie Boys was blaring. I stopped to see if anyone cringed at the lyrics "The sheriff's after me for what I did to his daughter, I did it like this, I did it like that, I did it with a whiffle ball bat".
No one batted an eye!!:confused3

I would have probably said something to a CM nearby. That bothers me, as a mother with two preschoolers. Yikes.

I doubt small children would think of "the way you grab me" meaning anything other than grabbing in the literal sense. Just as "nasty" wouldn't mean anything to them other than being mean.

I just checked out the lyrics... Now, if the version playing was the one with the "b word" and "smack that..." and "pimpin'", then I could definitely see being offended. Was that all there in the version that was being played that night? Or was it some censored version with just the grabbing and "nasty" comment?

I'm assuming they just stream whatever's playing on Disney radio.

I think most people don't worry too much about what's in lyrics. I rocked my infant daughter through months of colic to Rattlesnake Road, and when my son was a toddler he loved reciting the words to Meatloaf's Wasted Youth with his father, which sounded a bit like, "You know I love you, but you've got a heck of a lot of learn about rock and roll!"

didn't they use chunks of Metro Station "Shake It" in a parade? There's definitely bits of that song that aren't appropriate

As a kid in a car seat I knew all the lyrics to "Papa Don't Preach" but had no idea what the song was really about. If your kid "gets it" they already know more than you want them to know. If you don't react to the "wanna get nasty" they'll never notice.

To be honest it doesn't really bother me...I'm a teacher of 4 and 5 year olds and often they will be singing songs in the classroom, and sometimes will come out with "questionable" lyrics! The reality of the situation is chn hear songs with suggestable material all the time, however they really don't have any understanding of what it means!

That song is a classic. Sounds like a pretty cool water park. Most kids probably just heard the beat and didn't put any thought into the words like us parents would. Just mouthing it now I think of it as a fun silly song.. I can think of much worse songs to play including the kiddie bop songs which are played ad nauseum over and over again on the radio.

I have to agree with the original poster, regardless of whether or not kids understand what the lyrics mean I don't think it is appropriate. I was a big Beastie Boys fan in my young days as was DH, but we don't play it around our DS. He is copying and mimicking everything we say and do, and I want to set the best example possible. He has plenty of time to be a teenager when that time comes, then he can memorize all the dumb radio songs he wants ;)

I could be wrong, but I don't think I have heard a non-Disney song in the parks, with the exception of a dance party in Tommorrowland, I don't fine it offensive and I think most kids won't understand the lyrics however at the same time I think between the media and music our children are exposed to a little too much these days.

Every family is different! We had a totally different approach with our kids. We didn't try to hide our musical tastes from them, or change what we liked in order to set a good example. We shared what we loved.

Today they are teenagers and, especially in the case of our son who has turned into a huge music connoisseur/musician, their musical tastes have moved on from ours. There's such a short window in which to enjoy things together.

i always chuckle when on RnR...i went to private Jr. & Sr. highschool where we were taught that rock-n-roll was sinful, not only because the lyrics and lifestyle but because of the drum beat. now we go to the house of Mickey and have an entire attraction based on Aerosmith, a great band who is a rock-n-roll as they get. I love it when at a sports arena plays Ozzy...we were told we would become devil worshippers listening to that...anyone remember the PMRC? boy have times changesd.

BTW, i do agree with the OP.

Rock On! :rockband:

If your 10 year old listens to the radio, they've heard it. And I dont know where the OP is from, but our radio edit version still has that line in it.

What about the drumbeat makes music sinful? :confused3

ITA that its inappropriate. Honestly, I've found myself questioning radio disney's choices as well. On a three hour road trip last month, we had radio disney on the whole time for the kids and in that three hours, Selena Gomez's "Come and Get It" came on about a dozen times. Now I've seen her perform that live on an awards show and the "It" she's referring to is what we adults think it is. Not appropriate for a star idolized by young girls. Things like this is why so many girls wind up pregnant or taken advantage of. Our media sexualizes girls so young and they eat it up.

So, yes, I would have complained about lyrics like that playing in a family place. Disney won't let you in the park if you're wearing an offensive tshirt or have an offensive tattoo. Why not censor the music better?

A lot of the shows on the Disney channel are inappropriate, but they make Disney a lot of money, so Disney really doesn't care.

Makes you want to dance, which is a sin. I went to a private high school too. No prom for me! That's why my children will go to a public high school after spending their elementary years in a private school. Better academics in a private school but silly rules. I had to wear long skirts every day too. Funny thing, we went to magic kingdom on senior trip. Lol!

two-fold...you can dance to a beat...but also, the 4/4 timing of a rock drum beat is not in sync with your heartbeat...thus defiling one's body, therefore a sin...ridiculous, i know. i could digress into a whole host of legalistic crap that we were fed but this isn't the place.
