I swear I need a DVC for Dummies book 'cause I can't figure any of this out (obviously I am not a current member). If we buy DVC and plan to travel usually November or March, what UY would I need to request?

October would work well for you.

I agree with PP, October would be a great UY. It would cover all the months through the winter and into June (banking deadline is May 31st) if you ever had to cancel or change a vacation.

Aug or Sept UY would also work, as you have until March 31st or April 30th to bank the points.

With any of these, both your intended travel falls within the first 8 months--the ideal situation.

No need for the book. We all must begin somewhere and these boards are an excellent source. There are many knowledgeable and helpful folks here on the DIS.

I agree with this. I'm still learning and haven't bought yet and I've been SO overwhelmed with the kind people generous w/ their knowledge time and time again. No matter how many times the same questions are asked. THANK YOU DVC DISers!

Not to hijack the thread but I just bought AKV last Friday and I think I have a Dec use year. BUT my travel would mostly occur during the month of April. What use year should I request?

We do most of our traveling in the fall and during Spring Break. We have an August UY. I would think you'd probaby want a March UY....possibly April. You usually want to pick a month that falls just before the time you vacation the most.

Dec Uy is fine for April travel. However, what are the other possible times you might want to go? Unless it is Sept/Oct/Nove (worst time for a Dec UY), then you should be fine.

Plus, you are still in the 2008 UY for December right now. Are you getting 2008 points as part of your purchase, in addition to the 2009 ones?

Some new members have recently reports that Oct and Dec UY's were still getting them. If you switch to April, then you will only be getting your 2009 points as we are already in that UY.

Just something to think about. If you are not getting the 2008 points, and want to switch, then pick March/April.

It's the month you receive your points each year. Say if your UY is September. You receive points for the current year on September 1st.

I agree with most of the posts. Try to get the use year as close to the month before you plan to use it most of the time. This way if you have to cancel your reservation for whatever reason, your points are available to use for a longer period of time. This becomes important if you borrowed points from the upcoming year.
