What type of professions earned over $250k a year?

When I post on those kinds of dis polls I am posting my DH's income -and no he does not have time to dis -he works 70 or so hours a week

OK, so what are they doing hanging around the DIS?? Oh, and my Dr. DOES not Clear 250k a year, according to HIM.

Don't know if it's already been posted, but if your doctor is in family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics,....any guy you would see for a family doc, he ISN"T clearing 250. They generally have to work the hardest, too. ;)

Only the MDs who specialize make the bigger $. They go to school longer and have a training. There are fewer of them that can do a particular skill, so they pull in more money. Makes sense.

How in the world did President Bush freeze your wages?

I am a govt employee. His administration froze my wages. I dont even get cost of living increases. New hires in my field have been hired in at at 30% pay cut. My pay will be frozen until the new pay rates "catch up" which will be in 10 years or so. I will be long retired.

I would like to respectfully disagree regarding tenured professors: The average professor is lucky to make around $100,000. They don't call it the academic ghetto for nothing.

Are you under pay for performance? If not, federal employees, including military, have gotten annual cost of living raises every year for at least the last 20 years. There have been no wage freezes that I'm aware of.

My wife works for a company in the pharma business... They have offices all over the world. I know of at LEAST 10 people just in her building that make 250K plus....

I still think that it is very interesting (even a little amazing :confused3) that while the estimate is that only 2.5 million tax payers out of over a 100 million tax payers (or just 2.5%) have an adjusted gross income of over $250,000, there are so many right here on the disboards.

Sidenote: An annual income of $250,000 is equal to over $4800 a week.

This is especially interesting when you look at the US Dept of Labor Bureau of Statistics for New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island, NY-NJ-PA list which shows only the following jobs as earning an annual mean of $125,000 or more. (Please note I have taken into account 2 professionals being married and filing their taxes together.)

So do you really think that it is just a matter of hard work and 'putting in your time' that gets you to an annual income of $250,000 a year? I guess it is helpful if a judge marries a surgeon. Is that how so many of the posters on this board earn over $250,000 or are they just extraordinary? :rolleyes1

Hmmm... Just wondering if there is any connection from that to the high cost of healthcare/health insurance in the US:confused3

I am a doctor and my husband is a research scientist at a pharmaceutical firm. I am not sure how anybody who has a full time job finds a significant amount of time to post on the DIS. I probably spend a total of 1 hour a week reading or posting on the DIS. Our combined income grosses about $250K, which is a respectable but not exorbitant income considering the hours we work and the level of education we have achieved.

OK, so what are they doing hanging around the DIS?? Oh, and my Dr. DOES not Clear 250k a year, according to HIM.

Where should they be hanging? They have free time just like everybody else, don't they? I see no corellation between making a good living and being on the DIS.... In fact, if there is one, I would think it MORE likely that well off folks come to the DIS.

To experience Disney and WDW like so many here do, one would need to make a very good living.

It's all relative... $250K a year where I live is upper middle class, but not wealthy by any means.

And all the small business owners:

Do you mean that your small business has an annual net profit of over $250,000 or you take a salary of over $250,000 from your small business?

I am assuming that you do realize that taxes are NOT calculated on the gross income or even net income of a business. Either you pay income tax on the wages you take from your business or on the net profit if you are unincorporated or have a "S" corporation.

Island Lauri , reference your list. Air Traffic controllers are listed as making 140,000. This would be at O'hare or Atlanta or New York. On the old pay scale. (Very busy airports.) New hired controllers start at most places at around 35,000 and after full certification (several years training) can make about 80,000. If Obama is elected that may change (hopefully) since the staffing is critical now and they are hiring people "off the street" for training.

I agree. But most of the country it would be well off at least. Not in the high rent urban areas though.

I could live like a queen here on that amount. OK, maybe not a queen, but I wouldn/t be sweating the small stuff.

How exactly is it MIDDLE CLASS when it is only 2.5% of tax payers? :rolleyes1

Based on 2005 Census Bureau reports, some 40 percent of the nearly 115 million households in the U.S. earned less than $36,000 a year. That represented just 12 percent of all income. The 40 percent on the next rung up the economic ladder took in between $36,000 and $91,705 — or about 37.6 percent of all income. The top 20 percent, who made $91,705 or more, collected half of all income.

The 2.5% doesn't take into account the cost of living in different parts of the country. Surely you don't believe that someone making $250,000 in DC, NYC or SF are going to be living the same lifestyle (which is just as big a factor in "middle class" as actual dollars) as someone in say Wheeling, WV or Slapout, Alabama. Or do you?
