We have a late flight out of Orlando and a rental car. Is it safe to take luggage with you to the park, or are we better off leaving our things (including computers) with the bell desk at SSR and picking them up after the park and on the way to the airport, and how much time should we allow from exiting the park to the airport (with luggage stop).

On my last stay I did the ME. I gave them my luggage to hold until my pickup time. I remember getting some sort of card with a number that corresponded with a number they put on my bag and it indicating how many bags I had. I don't really remeber the details but they didn't just take my bags and say ok. They got some info from me.
I'm sure you can use them even if you're not doing ME.

I think last time I had a rental it was about a 30 minute drive. I also had to fuel up before returning the car.

We were just at the Polynesian in July and were able to check our luggage in at the airline check-in that's in the lobby. They transfer your luggage directly to your flight. They were able to check my other carryon bags at the hotel until we were ready to be picked up by Magical Express (which usually picks you up about 3 hours before your flight leaves). We were able to check out, spend the entire day at MK (luggage free) and be back at the hotel by 4:00 for the bus.

If you're not doing Magical Express and/or they don't have airline check-in at your hotel, you can check your lugguge with the hotel and they can hold it until it's time for you to leave for the airport. All Disney hotels do this service. It's perfectly safe - we checked in our laptop, camcorder etc (in a bag, of course) and everything was intact when we returned.
I would give yourself a good hour (if not a little more) to get back to the hotel from where you are and get your luggage before you need to leave.(if you're driving directly to the airport it's about 30-40 minutes to get there)

Have fun.

We were in the same boat as you this past July (rental car and a late flight). For the first time we checked our bags at the airline counter in our hotel and just brought our carry-on bags with us. They were fine in the car (sort of put under the seats) and the bags arrived at our home airport with no problems!

I can't begin to tell you how easy this made our day. No worrying about the luggage in the car, we didn't have to go back to the hotel to pick it up, they weighed everything there so we knew if it was overweight or not and the boarding passes we recieved had Mickey on them. How cool is that?!

BTW, we stayed at the ASMUsic.

It depends on which airline you are flying whether or not you can check your luggage at the airport. If you go to the transportation board, there is a sticky with information on magical express and which airlines can be checked in at the resort.
