That is what I'll do.
I booked a savannah view for nine nights in December, at DC rate (
AAA always gives you exactly the same discount, by the way). But as time approaches, I'll look out for codes for those dates.
Some years AP rates were better, others the discount wasn't as impressive. If the rates for your dates are the best, then buy APs. In my case, such discount would save me $400.
It actually saves me $800, but I have to put close to $400 to switch our HPs to APs.
Just make sure you take the time to add up all the numbers. When you end up with extra hundreds or thousands of dollars saved, it is research time well spent!
I am not one to keep too much loyalty if I don't get the best quality and value, I search all over for the best prices and if a non-traditional alternative gives me a better deal, I'll take that. So, although I plan to swap our HPs for APs, I won't do it unless I can get the best rates and make sure I can get my money's worth. Normally with APs you do get very fine rates in the resorts. And if you can get to the parks a few more times during the year, you're in the gravy!
