What time does the night safari start?

Is there an official time they start the special effects for the night safari or do the just start them according to when sunset is?

I know your question hasn't been answered yet, but we're going in December and are trying to figure out timing as well for possible FP's for the Nighttime Safari, Everest, ROL and dining package at Tiffins. Our thought at this point will be to just make an early dinning reservation and then try to do the second ROL show (if one exist at that point) and just fit the nighttime Safari and Everest in between.
 

I have the same question - was wondering if 9pm EST in June is late enough to be dark - looks like it from that link from the PP...
 
I used the show time as my gauge for the first weekend, the first show is right as it's dark enough to do it and it's very dark when it's done... It's starting to get darker at 8:30ish and dark dark at 9pm right now.. near the end of june should be closer to 10ish.
 
Does anyone have any experience with it yet? Can you actually see the animals?

The reports I've seen you see animals. It's just like during the daytime though, their moving animals so you might not see some in some parts
