My younges son, who is almost 3, is usually in bed by 6.30. However, on a Friday and Saturday night we sometimes let him stay up a bit later in the hope he might sleep in
My daughters, 11 and 12, go to bed at 10 on school nights when they are with their gran (who they live with), which I think is far too late. On non-school nights, she pretty much lets them stay up as late as they like - again I don't think that's right.
When they are here, I am quite strict and they are usually in bed by 9 and can read till 9.30 but then they are on holiday when they come here. Once they come to live with us next year, they will be going to bed at 8.30 and reading till 9 on school nights and we might let them stay up till 9.30 at weekends/holidays.
I think it really depends on the child. My oldest has ADHD and so doesn't need much sleep. The drugs she takes mean she's tired during the day but, when they wear off in the evening, she's like a cheetah on speed and doesn't ever want to go to bed. However, she's a miserable git in the mornings if she goes to bed too late so I usually send her to bed even if she says she's not tired.
God, I'm an evil mother
