what the heck is a Fish Extender?

:welcome: to the DIS boards!

You will find a great thread in the DIS DCL FAQ thread at the top of the board that will explain what a FE is, how it works and how to make one for your cruise. :)

the way I get it, it is a hanging 'thing' about 9" by 30" long with pockets (you can actually see them on ebay) they hang from the silver 'fish' on the outside of your cabin door. Many people make their own and those who don't sew just use fabric glue. relatively easy. If you go to cruise meets and click on your cruise, there is usually some enterprising person that will 'organize' it. You get names, cabin #'s etc. and then during the cruise you put small trinkets/gifts into other people's extender. (kinda like Halloween) It seems like a fun thing to come to your room and find a treat in the'fish'. Maybe some post-it notes, maybe a post card, maybe bubbles for the sailaway party. At least this is what i think it is. Granted it takes some searching and perseverance to find out. At first I thought 'oh no - 2500 people', but only a dozen or so sign up to do it so it isn't a chore and the kids love bringing the stuff to the different cabins.

That's exactly what I thought at first. But on our cruise, only about 10 families have signed up.

We had around 125+ on the EB PC repo. There was stuff in the FE all the time!!!

Did you have problems with the gifts being stolen? I am organizing the exchange for our upcoming cruise and we have 18 families. I'm really worried that the stuff will get stolen out of our FE before we can get back to the stateroom to get it. Any suggestions?

We didn't really worry about it. If someone is going to take stuff they will. Most of the gifts were small inexpensive things. We did do a different exchange among the 12 families we actually cruised with. Many of those things were hand delivered either at dinner [sat together] or at the group meetings that we had. Some of them were even mailed out proir to the cruise so that we could use them for the cruise. :) I am planning the gift for our smaller group for the WBTA and I will definitely be handing those out personally as they are breakable and I would hate it if they were taken...plus they probably will not fit in the FE with the packing material to protect them.

Help, I am new to this!!!! How would I know if someone on our cruise (Apr. 2-5) is doing the FE exchange? I am sure our grandchildren would enjoy it!! Thanks.

When u get to the roll call/meets, click on the date of your cruise ie. Wonder April 2 and then start searching thru the posts until u find it. Definitely a challenge!!!

The problem i'm having on my cruise in Sept 27, 4 days on the wonder not many people looks like they will be going or participating so I sort of stopped collecting items for the FE that may or may not take place on the dates I sail.

You could always use it inside of the room for Tink gifts for the kids. :)

I wish I had thought of it before our cruise, but go to Walgreen's or CVS or the Dollar Store and buy boxes of movie candy - usually 3/$3 but occasionally 5/$3. They're the big boxes like you spend $5 for at the movies!

I did the FE.

Just remember the things you purchase take up room and weight in your luggage. I think I had more stuff for FE than I had brought to wear.:rotfl:

I just got my FE yesterday! It was off ebay. Here's what it looks like!
