What sundae toppings do you bring onboard?

I only like ice cream and soft-serve when it is made like a sundae - with some sort of topping.

I'm hearing we are allowed to bring food onboard, as long as it's sealed. I don't think I want to be hauling heavy glass jars of caramel or anything (not to mention the mess scooping that stuff would cause. Ha haaha!) Any advice on which toppings or ice cream accompaniments to bring along? Stuff that's lightweight, discreet... (do we need to be discreet, or does DCL not care about us mixing in our own food?) Anybody bring root beer, or is that available on ship somewhere?

Also, I'd love to do sundae toppings for FE gifts but are there any that you've seen that are small and lighter-weight? We always have to fly in for our cruises so don't want to be too weighed down.

There's root beer, but not at the drink stations. You have to purchase it at a bar. Or you can bring your on onboard.

There is a different ice cream sundae on the dessert menu each night, i think every night. I know I've had at least 4 different ones in one cruise. I've never brought any sundae toppings on board, I prefer mickey bars during the day

Keep in mind that there are no ice cream dishes at the ice cream machines, only cones. So if you want to add toppings, you're going to need to hit the soda machine area, get a paper cup, and then go for the ice cream. It's not far, but...an extra step. Also, they do generally switch flavors out over the course of the cruise, so you usually will see more options than just vanilla and chocolate. If you still really want toppings, maybe get those movie style candy boxes?

Also, there is a sundae on many of the MDR dinner menus.

Which ship? The Dream class ships have ice cream for purchase that's not just soft serve.

As for toppings, my personal favorites are skor pieces (love the caramel crunch) and mini chocolate chips. My DS14 is all about the gummies, sprinkles and mini marshmallows.

Sprinkles and chopped/sliced nuts can be found in the baking isle at most grocery stores and hobby stores. They are prepackaged in small containers or bags. Don't know if a can of whip cream would be allow.

Little "fun size" bags of M&Ms would be a good size for toppings I would think. Or the little packs of Oreos that have two cookies in them - crush it up before you open it (or just let the airline do that for you while it's in your luggage!) and then mix in for cookies and cream ice cream!

On our first cruise we brought chocolate sprinkles, chocolate syrup and some other toppings for the soft serve ice cream to make sundaes; however, we ended up only using them once and never bothered bringing them again since there was so much food and usually a sundae option for dessert. (And we also hit Sweet on You and Vanellopes.)

My daughter got sundae toppings as a FE gift one time. She loved it because we would never pack own. Great idea. Just seems like too much work.

They have hard ice cream in Cabanas, usually 3 flavors each day. I also don't like soft serve ice cream. One day they had warm brownies next to the ice cream. This was on the Fantasy, each day at lunch. You can get bananas or berries from the fruit station to add also.

I don’t. Regular ice cream is fine for me. I don’t bother with toppings at home - no way am I schlepping that extra stuff on vacation.

mini peanut butter cups, sprinkles, crushed oreos, chocolate chips, berries (taken from cabanas and keep in your fridge), coconut are some of my favorites. You can get nutella in individual packets, peanut butter packets from cabanas (not as soft as peanut butter sauce but I'd still use it), cookies from cabanas to crush up... if you want other sauces they make them in plastic squeeze bottles.

My suggestion? go to a froyo by the weight place and see what they have set out - tons of great ideas.

I'm planning to make my son a kit for when we sail of his favorites If I have to bring them in original sealed containers I will probably take a few minutes to portion out some baggies after boarding so he can just dump a pile of toppings on and go.

Whatever floats your boat, but I can't personalty imagine taking more sweets on board. There is just so much food and dessert already. I never sat around the cruise and thought, man, what I really need is some candy right now to put on my ice cream. And believe me, I eat ice cream flavors like some people consume wine. I love the stuff.

Again, if is fun for you, go for it. But if this is your first cruise, really think about what you need to pack. We over pack every time and you just don't need it all.

As an FE gift, we are doing little decorative plastic bowls and spoons (designed to look like ice cream waffle cones) with little individually wrapped / factory sealed snack-size packets of toppings. The ones I have seen that fit that description are mini-oreos, gummy bears, m and ms, and marshmallows. I saw someone else post here that nutella comes individually wrapped too which I didn't realize, so am adding that to my list!!!

reese's, hershey's and kit kat have "Snack mixes" which is essentially the tiny mini sized candies prepackaged together with nuts and some salty/crunchy component. They come in 2 oz individual bags or 5.8 oz cannisters. I think I am going to get this for my son, easy to pack, gives a variety of toppings and he loves all the stuff in them.

Honestly, can't imagine the need (or desire) to bring more junk food onto the boat. The amount of sugar, snacks, desserts available is way over the top already.

Not our first cruise... and when we went before my whole family went bonkers on the soft serve late afternoon while we waited for late dining. And every time I just watched them eat and wished it was something I liked. I even tried getting cookies from Daisy’s to make a sandwich and didn’t love that. We’ll only be on the classic ships so the “extra-expense” ice cream isn’t an option. And I’m always too full at cabanas to get dessert! I don’t plan to bring a big pile of stuff - just a little something to help me enjoy an afternoon treat with my family.

Soft serve isn't ice cream. Soft serve is a group of ingredients to make a soft squishy ice cream type product, but sometimes doesn't even have dairy in it.

The first statement is certainly not always true. Soft serve ice cream is indeed ice cream. I agree there are some versions of soft serve that are not real ice cream, but it's by no means universal. As for your comment relative to this thread, it makes no sense...the OP wants to put toppings on, not replace the soft serve...
