This poll has raised a question for me.

I always thought that if you weren't a Roman Catholic but were a Christian, then you were a Protestant (and there are many Protestant denominations). I don't mean to offend anyone, really. I just want clarification.

Is this not correct? The poll choices (having Protestant listed as well as Baptist, Methodist and Lutheran for example) are what got me wondering.

Thanks.

No, you are correct. the poll is worded very confusing. Baptists, Methodists etc. are Protestants. And Catholic and Protestants form Christianity which is the religion.

This confusion always reminds me of people confusing countries and continents. :)

I go to a Baptist Church. But I am a Christian and I believe I could attend attend any Christian Church out there (except Catholic because of communion).

Thanks for the clarification!! :goodvibes

That is what I thought; that Protestant is really an umbrella, with many denominations under it.

Thanks again.

um, none of the above?

i believe that jesus christ was the son of god, and i accept him as my personal saviour-but i don't discount that he may have appeared in different incarnations to others (my god is too intellegent not to realize that what we believe to be the physical attributes of jesus would not have been readily acceptable over the world's history to all people, let alone in other worlds yet unknown to us).

i believe in the basic teachings of the bible, but am not a biblicist-the bible was written by man, not god personaly (i'm waiting for the unabridged/unedited 'producer's cut' :) ). therefore i also look to other non christian religious writings-and often find much common ground.

i'm not a church attender. i have an issue with man placing rules upon how, when, and where i worship, and esp. departmentalizing worship into groups that more often than not negativly judge the worship practices of 'non members' by virtue of their 'non membership'. i do not require an intermediary (priest or pastor) to speak to god on my behalf, nor do i believe that god hears a group prayer any more effectivly or quickly than an individual.

i activly pray, but for the most part, i believe that god is knowing and aware of all aspects of my life and will intervene as he sees fit.

This is basically the way I am.
Although, I do believe that God speaks to us quite often. But many times we tend to ignore or have suppressed that little voice in our heads. ;)

I would say that I'm quite a spirtual, but not religious Christian.

I attend a unitarian universalist church and consider myself a christian - I try to live my life following the example of Jesus in his interactions with the world around him.
I fall more toward the universalist part of uu in that I believe a loving god wouldn't want any of his children to be punished forever. It is the forever part that causes me problems with other forms of christianity.
I don't know what is after this world - I believe that there is something but I don't think we can know what it is. If you ask people who believe in the traditional heaven what they think will happen there, they really can't give an answer that makes much sense to me - singing hymns all day, walking on streets of gold, ??? whatever else they think would make them happy.

Me, too. I am part of a church, but I voted "other". Lots of Christians probably will, too, which may mess with your poll results.

I have nothing against these polls; I find the religious mix on the DIS interesting, too. However, "Catholic Christian", "Non-Catholic Christian", and "Christian other (please explain)" would be better options for future polls asking about religions. That's just an FYI for everyone and not specifically this poll poster. "Baptist", "Lutheran", "Catholic", "Methodist", etc., are not actual religions, but denominations within the same religion (except for the most fundamental groups who think they are "the only real Christians").

I voted Methodist because that's the denomonation of the church I was baptized in, grew up in, got married in, attend regularly, and baptized my kids in (I work there too!).

But like you I'm more inclined to say "Christian". You only have to look at my church to see an example of that. We're a barely hanging on congregation in a dying town. There used to be 9 churches in the tiny town - there are 4 left. Another Methodist church closed and their members joined ours. A Baptist church closed and their members joined ours. A Presbyterian church closed and their members joined ours. This past summer a Lutheran church closed and we picked up a few more members from them.

As a congregation we are involved in projects that our Methodist conference has aligned itself with (Nothing But Nets for example), but as a church we're more Bible driven than politics/history driven like some churches that haven't had all the "mergers" we have.

I grew up Church of Christ and they don't consider themselves protestant. They also don't consider themselves a denomination. The way it was explained to me (and I realize this may just be the congregation I grew up in - they are self goverened so different congregations may do things differently) denomination is a man made designation so they don't us that. Protestant is a designation devised by the catholic church so they don't use that either.

Our family is Lutheran. DH was catholic but switched after we were married.

I person after my own heart. I could have written this too.

I'm a born-again Christian of the Southern Baptist variety. I gave my heart to Jesus 38 years ago. I believe the Bible is God's Holy Word, written down by man, but authored by God. I was ordained a deacon 20 years ago, & serve my local church in that capacity. DW is the same & actually is employed at our church as Office Manager/Financial Assistant. As the Scripture specifies, we brought up our (now adult) children in "the training and admonition of the Lord."

I grew up Church of Christ and they don't consider themselves protestant.
Neither do Episcopalians (the most common religious affiliation of US presidents, btw).

At this time, however, I am an agnostic.

Grew up Catholic but don't believe in organized religion. I'm spiritual (pray, believe in God, etc).

I grew up going to a Baptist church (American Baptist Churches) but consider myself a Christian first and foremost. I don't attend church at the moment, but probably will again in the near future once I find one that feels right.

I'm another one that agrees with Barkley- accepting Jesus but not necessarily believing that it's the only way. God created so many diverse people and cultures- I think it's limiting Him to say that He couldn't have more than one way to reach them. I also find the teachings of other religious traditions incredibly interesting and useful.

That's how I understand it. But there are some other Christians that would not be exactly what you'd call either Protestants or Catholics I guess (ie Eastern Orthodox, Copts, etc).

I, like most of the rest of southern Ireland, am catholic
