As a Scranton girl myself, I can assure you that he is prounouncing hayna correctly. It is HAY-na.

Now, dyaeatyet? Case I is goin ta da store and I coul git a couple to tree sangwiches if yer hungry. Hayna or no?

OMG. That is exactly what I was talking about.... And my dad always says "a couple of two tree",,,, that is so funny! And we always went up to Eynon.. and also to the "Ak-a-me" in Wilkes barre. I'm a coal miners granddaughter,.

We called our five & dime stores just dime stores; Kresges was one, sort of partnered with Kmart later on & also Woolworths as well as Ben Franklin. My first job while in high school was at Kresges & with my first pay I bought a transistor radio. I'm 64.

What about transistor radios?

pop meaning soda drinks such as coke & pepsi

The oleo I remember was a white hunk of something my mom had to knead with a blob of yellow coloring. Ewwwwwwwwwwwwww! Couldn't buy it here; we had to go to Illinois (I'm in Wisconsin).

I was thinking oil cloth meant some kind of tablecloth while lineoleum meant a floor covering?

This is a neat thread & as for other posters here, it reminds me of my Grandma. I remember her getting all dressed up just to "go downtown" & she'd be sure to have her hanky & a hat. Gloves too.

How about "witching a well" or "witching for water"?

Refers to the way old timers would find a spot to drill a well. My grandpa could witch a well.

My favourite old fashioned phrase is "that's quite a connundrum".

I also use twitterpated and knickers regularily.

My mother sends my kids $20 at the end of every school year for "grading" (passing). She will call me and say "I sent their grading money today".

My aunt thought that it was unlady like for girls to whistle. She would say "a whistling girl and a crowing hen will drive the devil from his den". The fridge was the larder in her house. She was such a lady herself! I really miss her. Soap operas were her "stories".
