What Not to Wear - Jessie - 52 year old Texas gal....

I didn't see the show. I looked at the link posted here. Her hair in the before picture didn't look terrible. Her make-up was too heavy and her clothing was awful. I probably would have done a little less to her hair and perhaps worked a little more on toning down her clothing and make-up.

I do agree that it's sad when middle-aged women (and I am one!) try to look younger and instead they just end up looking silly. But then again, I derive my sense of self-worth from other areas besides my looks.

She did not comply with her willingness to listen to the experts.
She would not go along with Nick's vision which was immensely better than her own. She now looks 65. She got her way, we knew she was bent on it from the beginning.
I think she should have to give the $5000 back to the show.
Shame on her!!

I saw that episode. I thought she was sad. The woman at 52 had absolutely no self worth. Every thing she did, said and wore was all about catching some man.
Remember they had to tell her " When you try to compete with 25 year olds, the 25 year old always win".
The haircut was fierce. It made her look successful and classy. I don't mind long hair but she seemed intent on doing "I'm an bar fly/hooker" hair.

My bet, that the sequence and glitter is back within 2 months. Nothing worse than a 50 year old bar fly trying to look 30.

I agree with you. I don't know why I watched this episode again - it doesn't get any better the second time around. LOL I've been to Texas since this episode first aired, and had a chance to observe some of the single middle-aged Texas men in their native environment. Unfortunately, Jesse is right about those Texans wanting their women to have long hair. Those men just haven't evolved like the men in my area have (Southern California), who love women with short hair - probably because of all the female stars who have short locks - think Halle Barrie, Meg Ryan, Alyson Hannigan, Annette Bening, Natalie Portman, Sharon Stone. All of the Texas men I spoke with would prefer that their women have long blonde hair, and when I asked how long was long, they responded that it had to be long enough for them to get their hands into. Sounds a bit stone-aged, doesn't it? Anyway, don't blame Jesse. She's just a product of her environment. Jesse's simply trying to satisfy a marketplace demand. Jesse looks so much older than her chronological and having the right hair can only fix so much. If she would have smiled more, she would have looked more youthful. Also, if I were her, I would have saved the money she spent on hair extensions and instead put it towards the cost of a face lift. These two things alone would have shaved 15 years off her. Then couple those things with a hard-core exercise regime, some weight loss, and a goal towards improving what's going on inside her head, and Jesse would have men flocking to her like moths to a flame. Thinking that a long hair style is all that is necessary to get a man AND KEEP A MAN is just plain stupid.
:happytv:

I saw this episode and thought the same thing. She looked the same 2 months after she got home as she did when she started. I loved her hair after Nick cut it, and most women would kill to have a $300 haircut! With all due respect, I don't think Nick is a hack. I think most of those women on that show just want to cling to their youth (aka long hair) and don't see how much better they look with a real style.
.

Disclaimer--I didn't see the show...I was zonked out from black friday.

That being said--I think Nick is good at cutting hair and matching styles that seem to flatter the woman...HOWEVER...He seems to always push what he feels is best and some women do not like short hair. I didn't see the before and after of course, but for a woman to go from quite lengthy hair to short--that is a big deal. I have chopped my hair off once. My hair looked good...really flattering. But I didn't like it. As soon as it was done, I regretted my decision. It took me several years to grow out b/c my hair grows so slowly. So to say it grows back--mine takes too long.

Nick (to me) never really seems to care of the opinion of the person whom he is styling. He has an air of arrogance about him, especially with the women not too happy to give him free reign with the scissors. I like going to a stylist and showing her pictures and discussing what would be the best route with my hair. I now do layers, but it took me years to get comfortable with that after a layering debacle back in 1990. That took 2 years to self correct.

Anyway, I'm more than happy to get an expert opinion. But Nick seems far too chop happy.

I watched the mommy episode last night (had an awake moment and came across it)--he only essentially trimmed Mayim Balick's (sp?) hair. She is an actress, so I'm hazarding that he was just fixing what was her ordinary style. She really looked no different after. This was a combined episode recapping other mom's, so they didn't show the whole exchange. So he has it in him to not be a bully--and just make a hair style more flattering to the individual.

But he chops way more than I think he should. Aging women don't need to chop off their hair just b/c they had a birthday and got older.

I will go and take a look at the link now.

Perhaps it looks better on video footage, but I didn't think her before looked awful and I'm not a fan of the after either. It looks forced and not right for her.

No offense, but whoa!!:rotfl2:

Welcome to the DISboards.

You came to Texas for whatever reason and spent time asking men about the length of women's hair because of an episode of "What Not to Wear", and then bumped this quite old thread up as your very first post on the DIS ?

Where did you hang out in Texas, and what kind of men were you hanging out with? I know tons of women here of all ages with short hair, and lots of men who like it or at least don't mind it :confused3. In fact off the top of my head I'd say that a vast majority of my friends have shoulder-length hair or shorter. A few have long hair, but longer hair seems to be more common with children, teens, and 20-somethings.

I have read several posts here on the DIS by people in other parts of the United States (north, south, east, west) whose husbands will not allow them to cut their own or their daughters' hair short. It's a bizarre demand, but it's not something hugely common most places in the U.S. and definitely isn't specific to Texas.
