What Not to Wear - Jessie - 52 year old Texas gal....

My friend and I watch this show most Fridays (although we missed this week). Whenever the person flips out about cutting or changing their hair; my friends yells at the tv "It's just freaking hair. It will grow back".

I never understand women who go on this show and then reject everything they are told. If you don't want professional advice then step aside and let someone else have a shot.

It may just be hair but its my hair and its how I want it. Mind you I wouldn't want to be on that show anyway. I choose my clothes not someone on tv.

I'm kinda with the poor lady.

I have really long hair and it is my shield. I'd feel awful if someone made me cut my hair.

Styling it, I can totally see. Adding or subtracting details (bangs, no bangs, flip, curl under, layers, etc.) but I would totally be NOT me if my hair went away.

I wonder if they talked to her about her hair before they cut it ans asked her what she really wanted.

I don't know you from Eve but I can say with absolute certainty that you are WAY more than your hair.

Holy floozy, Batman! Her hair in the "before" screamed '80's (looked like Jean Smart in Designing Women), but her clothes in the "before" - on what planet is that outfit deemed fashionable?! yuk

This is the part that really stood out to me and made me shake my head. Her entire self-worth is tied to how men see her. How sad to be in your 50s and still think this way. And are the men in her life really that shallow that they will turn their backs on her because they don't like her haircut?

I wasn't crazy in love with what Nick did, but it certainly looked better than the bright brondle extensions she went back to.

It was just a sad episode. :sad2:

I have a sneaking suspicion that her ex-husband traded her in for a younger model (with long hair).

On ocassion, they'll get someone on the show who really needs therapy/counseling along with the makeover.

I logically know that if someone butchered my hair it would eventually grow back, but I wouldn't leave the house until it did. My hair is *me* -- it is a crucial part of my identity, to me. Way more than my clothes or anything else. NOT that I would care what a man thought about it -- I just love my hair the way it is.

I completely agree with you, and that is why I would NEVER go on that show -- there's no way I would let Nick touch my hair. There have been few things he has done on that show that I have liked, hair-wise. But then, I think Kate Gosselin's hair looks like it was cut with a weedeater, and a lot of people seem to think she looks terribly stylish, so what do I know? :thumbsup2

I am the same way. I am in my mid 30's and my hair is waist length. I would not cut it unless i was unable to physically take care of it anymore. No one has ever told me I look like I'm trying to be younger than I am, and if they're saying it behind my back, I don't give a hoot. I don't keep my hair long to please other people or to look young. I keep it this way because I like it this way.

I think the woman from this show looks better with her hair long. I guess I just like long hair. My bf has long hair too, haha he has better hair than I do. But mainly, I think this lady looks better/younger with the long hair because she looks happy. The other pic, the "after", IMO she looks frumpy.

I honestly thought she looked younger in the before.

Did you see the show? Honestly those pictures are not good representations.

I totally agree with this, although I didn't see the show - I'm just going by the before/after picture. But then I am very partial to long hair as well. I think they could have just left the length alone and updated the style if she wanted to keep it long.

I thought the poor lady had "issues" too, especially how she kept worrying about how men would see her with shorter hair. She needs some help with her esteem issues. I personally liked Nick's cut on her. Much more flattering and age appropriate, IMO.

Didn't they have one chick on this show that nominated herself and then wouldn't let Nick cut her REALLY long hair at all? Maybe I'm dreaming.

The woman's hair on the show looked dried out and fried. It didn't look healthy at all when she had it long.

I should state that I did not see this episode. However, from the pics on the website I really don't see much of a difference in her hair color. I also don't see why her before hair was "big". :confused3 I'm from Jersey. You ain't seen big hair 'til you been to Jersey. :rotfl: OTOH, I do think her after haircut and outfit are much better than the before.

YES! That is another episode that REALLY, REALLY ticked me off (and I posted about it at the time too). She nominated herself and then refused part of the makeover. Someone else, I'm sure, would have welcomed the whole package and she refused to let them even touch her hair "because of her beliefs." Her hair was, I swear, at least 5 feet long (she was really tall) and it just HUNG there like drapes. I refuse to watch that episode whenever it is on.

She basically asked for an expensive gift on national television (thereby denying it to someone else) and then said, "I don't want it." It was just rude.

It doesn't look it in the picture, but her hair was more platinum. I mean, she seriously gave Dolly Parton a run for her money.

What I don't understand is why Nick cuts some of the participants' hair short when they're clearly not willing to part with their "security blanket", yet I've seen compromises with others where he leaves their hair long after updating the style / getting rid of the fried damaged hair.

This woman was clearly in need of an updated style, but he drastically changed it despite the signals she was giving. Just last week, however, he left Mayim Biyalik (sp? - the actress who used to play Blossom) with most of her long tresses. What gives?

Just to qualify my statement, I'm in the "it's just hair; it'll grow back" camp. I've had it Demi Moore / Linda Evangelista short, and now it's down to my shoulder blades. And, thankfully, I've never had to worry if DH or the "guys" will like it.

Maybe Philadisney (who was lucky enough to sit with Nick & Carmindy) can share some insight into how much say so the participants have in the makeovers.

I don't recall who nominated her, but she was between 27 and 35, tall, worked as a nanny, maybe was going to college at the same time, brown hair in one long braid down to her behind, tucked under her clothes?

Back on topic - I agree, the most recent candidate looked better with the 'after' hair. I understand about security blanket - I just finally got my hair cut into a style in December, after twenty or so years of wearing it as long as it would grow.

But her hair looked much better - much more real - after Nick got to it.

Yeah, she nominated herself and I wanted to throttle her. She had this whole "I have a lot of respect for Nick and skills" but don't cut 1 cm off my hair. Its down to your knees woman:scared1: Crystal Gayle, you are soo not ok.

I saw most of the show friday. I tend to watch depending on how much I like the person. And Jessie just was not terribly likable to me. I really think she should have gone for antidepressants instead of a makeover. As for Clinton and Stacy not saying much during her reveal, I really think they took their cues from her. She was on the verge of tears the whole time and really, what are they suppossed to do:confused3

I watched the show - it was so depressing!

Normally I don't like Nick's hair cuts but I did like her cut after, I can't believe how upset she was after the cut. She shouldn't have even gone on the show, she seemed miserable the whole time.

I loved what Nick did to her hair...it looked great and she looked 10 yrs younger. I did not like the restyle at all. and it looked like she couldn't style it either as it was very flat to her head when she did it herself.

as a good hairdresser he shouldn't have given her a style that needed so much self ability in blow dry and style...not all people know how to blow dry their own hair with a round brush. Her hair at the coming out was too flat and dull....I think they should have helped her style it.

but I really loved it and was floored when she got her old hair back. That was one broken hearted woman with the lowest self esteem I have seen in a long time. :confused3
