I currently have a direct contract with Disney and looking to buy resell which is more important the same location or the same Use year

Depends on if you like the location . I personally like having contracts at one favorite location so I can walk a reservation . I have the flexibility to pick a resort and go when its open if I want to stay somewhere else. With more points in one location you can book larger units or multiple units for family at 11 month window. Having multiple resorts limits your choices to small units at each resort . Use year is important but you can't combine points from different resorts even with same use year at 11 months. I have been a member 20 years and booking what you want every time is only really possible at 11 month window and even then you often have to walk . Availability at 7 months is hit or miss. I like to plan and forget not stalk website for open nights. Best advice buy as many points at the resort you love the best resale. If you can get same use year great if not then get something as close as possible .

You can have your cake and eat it too by doing some searches through various brokers to put together your ideal amount of points at one resort with the same use year.

Depends on your goal.

Do you want 2 places to have home resort advantage?

Same UY does make it pretty easy, and there is no reason you cant get 2 different resorts with the same UY.

I have 2 different resorts and 2 different UYs and have not had an issue, but I suppose it would have been easier had I been able to find one in the same UY as my first. But I don't combine them or anything, I use 1 for 1 week a year at resort A and the other one for 1 (different) week at resort B

In most cases, you can probably get a matching UY though and that is what I would try for

Agree. We have both of our contracts @ BCV.

completely depends on what you want to do with the points. If you have one contract that you use for a week for family trips and you want another contract solely for adult only F&W type trips -- having different resort and UY is no problem. If you are planning on combining at 11 months -- then you MUST have same resort and it is HIGHLY helpful to have same UY.

If you want to combine to book at 7 months -- then location is not as important and UY becomes more beneficial -- although not completely dispositive.

IMO for your situation, UY is important if you're going to have multiple contracts. Though I am not in this situation, seems to be a lot easier when combining points, not to mention you don't have to worry about different banking/cancellation dates.

I agree that it depends on why you want more points. Somewhat on how many you have now too.

I would vote UY -- if you have the same UY but a different resort it makes it much easier to use and combine points at the 7 month mark. I recently purchased a second resale and had originally thought about a different UY, but after reading the sometimes difficulties that having a different UY could pose i just opted to get the same UY.

I would choose same resort for this reason. If you need the reservations 7 to 11 month in advance you will want all the points at the same resort.

Can someone explain what is the difficulty in transferring points when you have two use years? We travel in the spring and fall, so I thought having a different use year for each would be a good idea. I even bought my first direct so that I could have two use years! If you buy resale first, Disney forces you to have the same use year. Currently sitting here with a February 75 pt contract, looking at adding on 150 resale with June or August. I would likely transfer points from summer to February contract. Is transferring actually problematic, or just a nuisance?

It's a problem IMO, because transferred points do not show in your online account. You have to call MS to use them. That means all the members who book online have an hour head start for booking at the 11 and 7 month windows. That could make the difference between getting what you want and waitlisting.

My advice is to get same use year if you think you will need to combine points for a reservation. Only get different use years if you will use the contracts separately. (Use one for the spring trip and the other for the fall trip with no plans to use both for the same trip).

Completely agree.

And to add -- since you can't see the points in your online account -- if you cancel a trip that includes those transferred points, then your dashboard won't show you those points at all and then you'll either be super confused or you might not even realize you still have those points.

this happened to me just two weeks ago -- I needed some more points for a last minute booking at OKW, so I canceled a couple nights I had booked at VGF in which I transferred my APR points into my DEC UY to book the 2 nights...when I cancelled the two nights, my dashboard only showed like 6 points getting added back into my account. I was incredibly confused, so I called MS and she explained what happened.

Had I NOT needed to book a trip right then and there, though, there is a decent chance I wouldn't have noticed that the points didn't appear in my dashboard...which means I could have easily lost them.

I think if one goes with different UY...which is essentially 2 memberships..do it because you want to be able to avoid travel outside those last few months in a UY. If you want to be able to combine easily at 7 months, then stay with same. I have 3 UY but one had 300 points, one has 350, and one had 150. This allows me to use each independently of the other to book specific trips without worrying about needing points from the other.
