:lmao:

The down side to that is, if you have a job where you could get called in on short notice, on a day off, or before or after hours, you'd be the first one they call.

One of my coworkers recently moved REAL close to work. I'm no longer at the top of the call list when the alarm goes off :cool1:

To me a great deal depends on the quality of the commute. I moved from a place where I had a half hour commute, to another place with a half hour commute. But the first place that half hour was about 3 miles in bumper to bumper traffic, with construction every other block and crazy drivers, and lots of headaches. My new place? Half an hour straight shot on roads where the traffic moves at a reasonable clip. I used to dread my commute, and now I kind of look forward to some peace in the car.

Similarly, many years ago I used to commute an hour by train and loved it. I got on at the first top, got a seat, read my book, chilled out, got off and walked a few blocks to work. When I moved to my current place it's about an hour by train and I thought "Oooh, maybe I'll do that" but no way did I like that! My stop is in the middle of the line, and it's a crowded line so you're standing packed like sardines, then it transfers at a crazy crowded, noisy, busy station, and the second train is full when it comes. I'd much rather drive!

I've had commutes of varying lengths. When we were younger, and first married, I commuted more than an hour (sometimes took as much as 2 hours). There is NO way I would do that again. Never. It sucks too much life out of you. We moved from that area to one where I had a 15 minute commute. I was in heaven. When we moved back to the bad traffic area, we sacrifice on house size so that my commute would not be more than 30 minutes.

There is a big difference between 60 mins of driving and 60 mins of riding the train/subway/bus.

There is also a big difference between 60 mins straight driving and 60 mins stuck in the rush hour traffice.

I have the worst. My work is 30 miles from where I live. On an average day, it took me 60 mins oneway. On a rainy/snowy day, 2 hours driving is not unheard of.

The worst thing in our town is the trains. They go backwards and forwards for up to 15-20 minutes at a time. And it's not on a schedule, so you never know. And you don't really know how long it's going to be, sometimes it's shorter, so you don't know if it's worth it to drive across town to try to get around it. Or how long it is, is it blocking the other crossings? It's a nightmare. I hope I'm never on the wrong side if I have an emergency.

I just made the move from San Antonio to Houston and was terrified of the commute. It now takes me on average 30 minutes for the 18 mile commute. In San Antonio it took me 35 minutes for 7 miles. That taught me that it just wasn't the time but what happens during that time. If I'm moving I'm much more tolerant of the commute.

Right now my commute is 7 minutes, I would be willing to go up to 15 minutes but no more than that. I leave work at 755 to get there by 8:06 (I leave a few minutes in case I hit any "traffic") and I punch out at 351 and am home before 4:00. I'm not willing to get home any later than that, have to pick my daughter up from school at 4 most days and everything works out pefectly with the "commute" I have.

I don't think I've ever worked where it's taken me more than 15 - 20 minutes to get to work. I'd go crazy with a long commute. I currently can get to work in 10 minutes if I hit lights and traffic right. I get mad when I get stuck at a light and it adds a minute or two to my drive.

I hate traffic so long distance commuting in rush hour would not work for me at all.

I said less than 30 minutes. Currently it takes me about 20 minutes to make it to work, freeway all the way. When I lived at my previous home, the commute was longer even though I lived closer. It was all in town, stop and go traffic.

My firestation is exactly 14 minutes from my house.....thats pretty good.
My wife drives maybe 18...so were good!!

<30 minutes if it's possible, not counting the time it takes to get to the bus stop.
