what is your cough remedy?

Does the Vicks Vaporub on the feet work only for coughs from colds or productive coughs? I'm hoping to find something that works for coughs from the constant tickle of drainage in the throat.

Coming from a family with lots of asthma, if my kids cough nonstop, I take them to the doctor. Last time this happened, my daughter had pneumonia.

The other issue could be drainage from allergies.

I would definitely have her see her doctor just to make sure all is well. But when I have a cough I make a 50/50 blend of Honey and fresh grated ginger it makes a thin slurry and I take small sips every hour or so throughout the day.

Suck on crushed ice. It numbs the throat and interrupts the cough cycle.

The Vick's on the feet works for any cough we've encountered so far. My daughter just had the tickle from drainage cough last week and it worked like a charm. :thumbsup2

Dark chocolate, the darkest you can tolerate. For an adult, it's about 2oz of 70% dark. Some of the studies say it may work better than codeine.

Good luck, I hate lingering coughs.

Light Corn Syrup, 1 tbsp up to 4 times a day depending on how bad the cough is. Lots of hot tea with lemon.

We do this with allergies. We all are on allergy meds so not to double dose, we use the corn syrup. No one likes the taste ;) Everyone follows it with a shot of water.

If this is a dry cough or just an irritating tickle in the throat, try putting a 1/4 tsp. of salt on the center of the tongue and leaving it there for as long as you can. Rinse and spit. Sea salt works best, but table salt will do in a pinch. I'm told it is the minerals in the salt that stops the cough.

i just got a cold this week and was up all night with a wicked cough. i took mucinex yesterday am but woke up really congested again because i didn't take anything last night before bed. my dr. swears by drying things out, he told me once that you often get post nasal drip that triggers coughing and usually once i dry things out the cough gets much better. he has me use a nasal spray, mucinex, and cough syrup with codeine at night. sounds like overkill but it helps.

i also 2nd going to a dr if it goes on for days. i had respiratory infections twice so two summers ago when i had a bad cough i went in thinking i needed antibiotics. he found out i was using cough syrup with codeine and it wasn't working. he said this was very unusual so did a few more tests and turns out i had a inflammation not an infection! i had a month on an inhaler.

If it's just a cough from a cold I swear by Buckleys. Disgusting taste.. but it really really works.

However, like others have mentioned, if it's a persistent cough and its not getting better it's off to the doctor we go. I've already had bronchitis this year and coughed for a month. It came on after a sinus infection:crazy2:

Delsym works great for my DD also(and me when I need it)I even told DD's dr about it, and he didn't know they sold it at the Walgreens by him, so he is telling his patients about it.

When I was in disney one year with my extended family we had rented a condo and I had a horrible cough that really acted up at night. Everyone was really annoyed with me so my aunt bought me Creomulsion. It's brown tar-looking syrup for coughs that really worked. With just one dose my chest felt less tight and my cough was controlled for hours. After a few doses my cough really improved and ultimately within a week it was gone.

I have not seen it in stores in a while but it's still available online.

#1 cure for coughing that has worked for all of my kids was putting Vick's on their feet covered by socks.

Not kidding...it is hands down the best treatment EVER for a cough. Don't know why on earth it works, but it does. When my kids pediatric doctor told me that when my oldest was just a toddler I thought he was just trying to make me look like a fool.:rolleyes1

He wasn't kidding and it works.:cheer2:

:thumbsup2 This really works!!!

So funny that I replied to this thread yesterday, while I was feeling fine, and then coughed ALL night. It's an itchy, irritating cough that only starts when I lie down. Fabulous.:crazy2:
My husband moved to the couch to get away from the noise and we are both exhausted. Yet there's no trace of it today:rolleyes2

Vicks(or the knock off version) on the bottom of your feet with socks, really works!!!! Also a tablespoon of honey before bedtime. The combo was the only way I slept when I had a really nasty cold last month.

This cough thing is going around a lot right now. They are dubbing it the 100 day cough.
5 of us have it, DS16's coach has it. We have all been on antibiotics and still can't shake the cough. Got DS12 robitussin with codeine today from the Dr.

I can tell you the chocolate works. I give it to DS12 when he gets wheezy from his allergies (Allergy induced asthma). We also do the lemon juice, whiskey, honey cough medicine.

I've heard of the vick's on the feet but my kids were grossed out by the thought so the won't let me do it.
I've never heard the turnip one before though. That one sounds interesting.

As a person with bad lungs that is very prone to bronchitis and pneumonia, I swear by Mucinex DM (the 12 or 24 hour version - the 4 hour version wears off too fast). I don't know if they have a kids version or not - if they do, I'd definitely try that just given my own experience with the adult verion. And I warn you that the cough may very well get worse the first day or two taking it, because it is clearing out all the gunk. But once that passes it gets better. Several other folks I know with equally bad lungs also swear by it.

I have asthma and am prone to respiratory issues like bronchitis and I often use Mucinex too. It has gotten me through many nights and days! They do make Mucinex for kids in a little pouch that disolves right on the tongue. I have used it for myself in a pinch too. It worked!

I am very curious about the Vicks on the feet idea. I am going to give that a try next time someone here gets a cough.

I just have to comment! Last night my daughter was coughing and couldn't sleep. She hates taking medicine and I had already forced her to take Mucinex so I thought I would give the Vick's on the feet a try. My husband and my daughter thought I was crazy. I will admit that I was very doubting but thought I have nothing to lose. I swear that 15-20 minutes later the coughing stopped and she slept all night. It was amazing! Thanks dis boards! :)
