What is the water smell in Orlando???

This was the number one thing that I felt unprepared for on my recent trip to the World. My sister and I drink tap water and assumed that we would just refill our water bottles with tap water at WDW. We found the water undrinkable and switched to bottled water. Now I understand why people stop to buy water on the way from the airport. I even stopped getting drinks with ice cubes, because once they started to melt they would flavor my drink. It's definitely sulfur, not harmful, but not tasty. No wonder everyone complains about the coffee.

Has anyone noticed that the water in MK tastes absolutely awful? I found it was bad to the point that even the slush drinks tasted like it.

When my teenage daughter was little she used to say the water at the drinking fountains at Magic Kingdom tasted like "firecrackers"! LOL Must be that sulfur taste....:lmao:

I agree with your daughter! On my last trip I asked for a cup of water at one of the snack karts at MK. I took a few sips and had to pour it out! My first thought was it tasted exactly like fireworks! ... or at least how they smell. ewww.

I thought the water from taps at Pop tasted fine.

I dunno about the taste of water down there (didnt drink much of it) but the smell of the water in Pirates makes me know I'm in Disney :)

The sprinklers were run from well water vs. city water, which is great because it's free but it stinks!

We now fondly refer to it as the "Florida stinky water" smell!

well, I live in FL and the only place that smells like sulfur near us is whoever uses well water....gotta love the city water! :)

I'm in Florida, and our water doesn't smell, have a colour to it, or an odd taste.

Now the well water for the irrigation system does. BUT the treated water for the household is just.....water.

totally agree :)

I had heard there was a sulfur smell to the tap water at WDW, so I bought bottled water. We stayed at POR, and the tap water actually turned out being fine, tasted like average tap water to drink.
I suppose it depends on what you are used to drinking at home.

I think that's a lot to do with it......I actually don't enjoy drinking water so I don't do it much, but when I drink tap water, I drink it and I'm not sure it has had any weird taste/smell anywhere....

I heard this and I'm like huh :confused3 you couldn't pay me to drink this water.

For the PP's that say the water is fine you must not have a good sense of smell and are in a very very very small minority because its a sulphur chlorine smell and If I drank it untreated I would get ill.

its all the people with well water, seriously.....there are plenty of places in the state that don't have city water service, so they get themselves some well water and treat it.....

but seriously, have ya'll heard of Zephryhills? Besides Dasani, that's the most prevalent bottler I know of.......and it for sure doesn't taste bad or they would be out of business!!!

.....and I can't believe that I wrote THAT MUCH about water..........I apologize haha

It's not FLORIDA water. It's the Orlando municipal water supply. Florida is a big state and the water quality varies from city to city and county to county all across the state, just like in every other state! Orlando happens to have a lot of sulfur in the water, hence the "smell".

I agree with this. I am a Florida resident and we live in an area with alot of fresh water springs. We have our own well for all of our water consumption. Our water here is awesome!! We do not need a filter or anything. When we are in a bigger city..including while at Disney...we all notice a huge difference in taste and smell...

I agree with the OP, the water does smell odd. I've wondered over the years about it too. Yucky.

Funny thing about this is I heard an NPR news story about how Florida is in the top 5 of states that produce bottled water and that the state is going to put a 6 cents a gallon tax on all water shipped out of the state.

Funny thing, all the bottled water comes from Florida's many springs. Look on any bottled-water label, and chances are it will say it has been bottled from one of our many beautiful springs.

I don't drink fountain drinks from WDW anymore, because the water makes them taste awful. My sister and her boyfriend moved to Ocoee in August and they have a Britta filter in the fridge to make the water taste ok, and it still tastes a little gross to me after being filtered. I see the protestations on here about it only being well water or being off-property, but it's definitely all over the resort area and I won't drink it when I'm down there unless I'm really desperate - it just tastes too gross. Sorry, Floridians. If it makes you feel any better, most bottled water tastes gross to me too - too many minerals that shouldn't be there. Aquafina is the best as far as that goes - tastes the closest to our water here.

I definitely found the water in WDW to have a smell and very different taste to what we have here in the UK. Found it very strange

All the tap water in FL has that smell/taste.

I wonder if FL locals think other peoples water stinks?

Yep, they do!

My uncle lives in FL and everytime he comes to Ohio he says he can smell the chlorine in our water...of course we can't small a thing. :confused3

But I do agree with the sulfur smell around FL. It always smells so bad and I always seem like it gets stuck in my nose and I smell it anywhere I go when outside of WDW.

I'm from North Carolina & I have never noticed a smell. Now Northern Ohio... that's a different story. That water makes me want to puke.
