What is the "Jean" problem?

My husband and boys wears nice jeans to dinner but that was on the "older" ships. On the Fantasy, I would probably dress a little better.

On the contrary, the 3 and 4 day cruises of the Dream tend to be more casual than the longer itinerary cruises (which have formal and semi-formal nights). Just because the ship is 'shiney-er' doesn't mean you have to be! :lmao:

.

Jeans are fine. Those who like to dress up for dinner can't spout dress code for this one. As usual, the vast majority of people are going to use common sense in what they wear for dinner. Most who wear jeans will wear presentable jeans, not torn ones, as they should.

I'm perplexed a bit by this comment. This is not the first time I have come across someone saying sailing on the Magic or Wonder is not as good or not as "fancy" as the Dream or Fantasy. We sailed the Magic for the first time last month and I was a bit horrified at the number of people in my town who asked if we went on the Dream and when I said no they looked at me and said "oh." with a sad look like I couldn't afford the "fancy" ship. Truth was my family wanted a 7 night cruise which we couldn't do on the fancy ship and indeed paid more money. :confused3

I was unaware that the other ships were now lower class and not as good and therefore ok to wear jeans at.

Sorry, but people are funny.

Well, the reason why I would dress better has nothing to do with the ship per se but more about it being our first trip on the "new" ship. I defintely don't think it is a lower class ship. For me, it would be a new experience so I know I would take more pictures. I would probably even buy Shutters expensive pictures so that means I better look nice in those pictures! And you're right-- I am funny!

I always find it fun to get ready to go to dinner. I always wear either capris, a sundress, or skirt. I really don't even take jeans with me unless we cruise in the winter when I need to wear them from home. In 8 cruises, I've never worn jeans. That doesn't mean you can't, I personally just wouldn't.

I don't like when people wear jeans onboard to dinner. Just my opinion. I am not spouting dress code, just preference. I like to dress up a pair of jeans sometimes too but prefer not to do it for dinner on the ship....I dont even take jeans. Again, just an opinion.

:confused3 Excuse me? Since when did they announce that the Fantasy would be nicer than the Magic? We cruise on "the older ships" and wouldn't think of wearing jeans on the Magic. I wouldn't even pack them. We prefer the Magic to the Wonder because the Wonder is too casual. But even on the Wonder I wouldn't bring jeans. I'm just not sure why you would "dress a little better" on the Fantasy just because it's newer. What does newer have to do with anything????

(PS) NOT funny...I'm not laughing. I'm actually a tad put off by the insinuation that the "new ship" is more worthy of dressing appropriately.

Please take a deep breath...I am sure the poster did not mean any harm. Let's not read more into it then was intended.

BTW....we DID notice people more dressed on the Dream than I have seen on the other ships for whatever reason (this was on the 3 Dream cruises we took). I felt like dressing up more since it was new ship. Not saying anyone has to dress up more, just noticed that they did on our cruises.

I sure wish it was the last time I was in Palo.

We were enjoying a wonderful brunch when in strolls a guy in jean shorts, ripped not hemmed, a hockey jersey and sneakers with no laces.

I am a live and let live kind of guy so I said nothing but it relly irked me the way he was dressed

Interesting...my 19 year old went to tea in "dressy" jeans--clean, dark, no holes, part of an outfit (correspondingly trimmed jacket). She was very politely asked to change and return. Of course, she immediately apologized and disappeared. The matre d' did comment that her outfit was very nice, but he had just asked a young man to change, so he had to do the same for her.

It does seem to me that people used to dress up a bit more on the Magic than they do now. I have attributed that to the airline luggage regulations=-may or may not be accurate.

Frankly, neither of us had even thought about the jeans rule before we got there...I know her brain was on "look decent" mode. I am NOT arguing the rule; I firmly support her being sent to change.

I agree - people are funny (interesting). I always find it interesting that the dress code threads always bring out the people who take offense or are put out at what other people are wearing - that it somehow shows disrespect to them or to the staff. I would guess the staff would care less about whether people wear jeans, shorts, etc. and would care more about how they are treated by the guests (rude, demanding, etc.) and whether they get an appropriate tip. I'm sure they've "seen it all," and I would think the shades of how dressy their table is would not be that big a deal.

Now if someone is smelly, overly revealing, dirty, ripped up, etc., that is different, but what people wear on their bottom half (shorts, jeans) is generally covered up under the table anyway, right???? :confused3

If I could attach a song to this thread, it would be a country song out recently that I like -

"God is great, beer is good, and people are crazy!" :rotfl:

(Just a song, people, nothing personal towards anyone - we all have our own unique particular point of view - I'm sure several would apply that to me as well). :hippie:

So - wear your jeans! (Almost) no one cares!!!

I think a nice pair of capris or a sundress would look nicer. IMO.

Good luck trying to find a "nice" pair of jeans. They all seem to be ripped, faded or "bedazzled" so you look like you're trying to be 13 again.

Sigh.

Sorry, :offtopic: but I took what she was saying to clearly be that she thought the newer ships were more worthy of dressing up & following the recommended dress just because they're new. And that idea bothers me. I simply don't think the Magic deserves any less respect just because she's "older". I have no intention of "dressing down" just because it's not all shiny & new. She's not ready to be put out to pasture yet.

The Magic will always hold a special place in my heart....the new ships will be bigger and fancier, but they'll never be THE FIRST.

We were on her first official voyage...and she's just special!

Just a question, how strong are people's feelings about jeans and walking shoes? If possible, I would like for my daughter (15) to be able to go to dinner in jeans and walking shoes, because she has cerebral palsy and the shoes help keep her tendons from shrinking--they're prescription shoes. I'm planning to have her wear nice shoes for the formal night and semi-formal night, but doing it every night would be kind of hard on her. Is this going to be a big issue for people? I don't want her hassled because of it.

I'm planning to have her wear polo shirts, with a nice sweater if it's needed.

Have your daughter wear whatever works best for her--just basically look decent. Function is FAR more important than what someone else feels is appropriate. No one will hassle her.

And if she needs anything to make her situation easier, don't hesitate to let DCL know--either in advance or after boarding. For example, I sailed with a friend who walks short distances with braces and crutches, but chose to use her wheelchair on the ship (GOOD CHOICE). We had requested the needed HA cabin, but I didn't think to ask for a dining table on an aisle so we could get the chair in place for her to transfer. Alan (dining manager) had seen the HA cabin request and already had the needed seating! :goodvibes

Thank you (both you and the previous poster.) That does make me feel better. My daughter walks very well (thanks to 90 minutes of physical therapy every day), and most people don't know anything's wrong. However, that's mainly because she is so good about keeping to her therapy and wearing her shoes. I don't think she'll have a problem on the cruise, as long as nobody makes one for her. I thought I'd get her some black jeans before we went--she likes them as well as blue jeans, and they seem to bug people less.

On the 3/17 Dream we were sitting watching some March Madness in 687 and in walked a couple who looked very annoyed. The male half asked if there was anyway to order food in the bar, because he was told he could not enter Palo wearing jeans, and he did not have any other pants. The answer was no, but they could get bar munchies from the hall or room service in their room. The female half later stormed out of the bar looking furious at her mate. So, they are sticking to the policy on the Dream for Palo. Anyone else notice the Remy dress code says no sandals? I thought that was a little odd for women.

Thanks because I didn't mean how it sounded, that's for sure. If the whole thread was read you could see I had added an explanation....

That's why I said FOR ME thats what I would do. Besides, Fantasy is 7 nighter and tends to be formal anyways.

Really??:confused3 So now that the Magic and Wonder are "older" it's okay to dress down on them?

You have cruised DCL a few times....wear what you did the other times....nothing has changed. There is no new dress code just because the classic ships are older and there are newer ships.
