What is the earliest/latest your schools start?

Elementary starts at 8:25 (or 26,27,28) and ends at 3pm

Middle school starts at 7:40 (I think) and ends at 2:18

High school starts at 7:35 (again I think) and ends at about 2:20

Middle and high school share a bus as they are about 1/2 mile from one another...wait it's a 1/2 mile from the enterance of the main road to where the bus stops off at the middle school.

Anyways, HS gets dropped off first and picked up last hence the earlier start and later end times.

Most after school sports/games start at 3:45, well soccer does for both MS and HS.

High School 8 am
Junior High School 9 am
Elementary School 830 am
Bus schedules used to be a factor in that, but they stopped bus service about 10 years ago.
Right now, the biggest opponents of pushing back the start of the school day are those with kids with after school activities, they don't want the END of the school day pushed back.

Ha, traffic here is WAY thicker at 7:15 than at 9:15! (Though 8:00 would be worse than either).

We have one rural elementary school & all the others are "in town". The rural school starts at 7:55 and ends at 2:55. All the in town schools start around 8:15 and let out at 2:55.

It the students have to be in their seats by 9:15, I would have to be there by 8:45. That means I do indeed need to be driving around 8am. The school is roughly 16 miles INTO the city from my house.

See, here 90% of all "day" shifts begin at 7:00 or 8:00. So, traffic thins out within minutes of 8:00. I don't know anyone that starts at 9:00. Even the banks open earlier than that here.

We have open enrollment here for schools, and a growing number of parents are enrolling their kids in the school closest to their work, not their home to over come childcare issues. The peak of the commute here is 730 am, (and the banks open at 9 here)

We wanted to move our daughter closer to work - although she also would have been closer to home. When DD entered school, DW & I both worked in Town A 12 miles to the Northeast. 4 miles from our house, and directly on our path to Town A, Town A has an elementary school.

But, we're in Town B district. Town B is 12 miles to our Southeast. The assigned elementary school is 11 miles South of our house NOT on a direct path to Town B. Once at the elementary school, it's still 9 miles to Town B.

It's such a pain DW went to work for the elementary school just to make it work LOL

Our elementary schools start at 7:20, high schools at 8:20 and middle schools at 9:20.

Elementary school is out at 2:30, high school at 3:30 and middle school at 4:30.

Start times are staggered so the same bus drivers can drive different bus routes.

The worst is getting on the bus at 6:50 for elementary school and getting home at 4:50 from middle school :(

That's so odd. High school is usually 1st and gets out 1st so older siblings can watch the younger ones.

Our HS hours are 7:05-1:40
Junior High(7-8) 8:00-2:30
Middle School(5-6) 8:30-2:30
Elementary(k-4) 9:25-3:25

I agree that it is much harder to wake the kids up earlier as they get older. Our district staggers because of bussing and I have heard that they have the older kids getting out earlier so they're home for younger siblings. I suspect practices for athletics are also a contributing factor.

my son would KILL for only a 20 minute bus ride-he is picked up at 7 for his 8:15 start, gets out at 3:05 so we don't see him back at the bus stop till 4:15 at minimum.

OMG- can't imagine having to get on a bus an hour and 15 minutes before school starts! Our bus comes at 7:10 for a 7:20 school starting time.

I think most experts (and other parents) would agree with you as well - that the older students get, the later they should start the day.

The problem, generally speaking, tends to be that the older the students get, the more time in the day they usually need (for homework, jobs, afterschool activities, etc.) so I think that's why most school districts schedule the way they do.

Our school district used to have the Jr. High start the latest but people all went in front of the school board to say they needed the Jr. High kids home before the grade school kids because so many of the older siblings have to get the younger ones off the bus and watch them after school. So now high school starts at 7:20 and gets out at 1:50- Jr. High starts at 7:40 and gets out at 2:20 and grade school starts at 9:20 and gets out at 3:20- this way even if the kids in Jr high have to stay for extra help after school they can still be home in time to get the younger siblings off the bus.

The district I work in has staggered start times. High schools and middle schools start earlier than the elementary schools. The school I teach out is one of the late starting schools. We start at 9:15 and dismiss at 3:23.

Ours are staggered because of bussing too...

high school starts at 7:50
middle school at 8:05
elementary at 8:45

They all get out between 2:45 and 3:20. (elementary first, middle school last). They're telling us now that they're going to extend the elementary day next year, which I anticipate will create some transportation hassles.

Public elementary school starts at 7:30 here. It's the only thing I hate about being an elementary school teacher.:headache:

I know when I was involved in Little League it was a mess, because Little League strictly enforced borders based on where you lived. We literally had kids who went to school next door to our fields who could not play in our league because they lived 10 miles from here. Little League last year changed the rules to base borders on where your child lives OR goes to school.
Those distances are nuts. Our district......before they started closing schools due to declining enrollment...and before open enrollment..was well laid out. No address in the district was more than 2 miles from an elementary school.....4 miles from a middle school, or 6 miles from their assigned high school.

Our starts are staggered due to busing issues, also.

Elementary school, grades K-5: 7:30-2:00
Middle school, grades 6-8: 9:00-3:30
High school, grades 9-12: 8:30-3:00

We live 2 miles from our elementary school and I drive to/from because even though we have bus service, it would pick up before 7:00, so I elect to let him sleep longer and drive him. We leave our house by 7:20 for him to be there by 7:30. My older son is in middle school a mile from our house and we still have bus service. It picks him up at 8:20 for 9:00 start - we have the last stop in the morning and first in the afternoon. Next year, he'll be in high school and the bus comes at 7:25 for 8:30 start. He's not going to be happy getting up early again!

The buses that service the elementary schools also serve the middle schools because they have enough time to drop off by 7:15 and start a second route. I think the buses that pick up high school kids only have one route.

Our schools are all staggered for bussing purposes. The earliest schools start is 7:15 (most of the high schools) and the latest is 9:15 (mostly middle schools).

Personally, I think 7:15 is too early for high schoolers and 9:15 is crazy since many of the schools are in the city and the traffic going that direction for that start time is horrible.

I am currently looking for a job in the school district and checking start times as I do NOT want to drive in to a 9:15am school that gets out at 4:15. I would be doubling my commute to work with the traffic times.

Dawn
The earliest school on our district is the high school which goes 7:35-1:55
The latest are the k-2 elementary schools which are 9:15-3:35

They are staggered for the us schedules

We don't have busing, other than for students who are in special education.

The 5 elementary schools are 8:30-3:10
Middle school is 7:55-2:50
High school is 8:00-2:55

Elementary- 7:45 to 2:50
MS- 9-4
HS- 8:40 - 3:40

Both our middle and high schools have morning sports practice and after school sports practice.

For my kids, K-3 is 8:00 am - 3:40 pm.
Grade 4 is 7:45 am - 3:15 pm
Grade 5-6 is 7:30 am - 2:45 pm
Grade 7-12 is 7:30 am - 3:40 pm, but not all students have to attend that whole entire day. Whether you start at 7:30 or 8:15-ish and whether your day ends at 2:45 pm or 3:40 pm varies based on your classes & electives.

There's a free before-school program that starts at 7am. For the after-school program, you have to pay. There's no bussing.
