What is the Best Digital Camera for the Money??

Our camera began giving us trouble during our return portion of our WDW trip in March. We had to buy a new camera and got a Kodak M1033. Absolutely love this camera, wish we had it on our trip. Its slim, zoom feature, face recognition, large viewing screen, lith/ ion battery, and on and on. It is literally a point and shoot. When you have it in "Smart" mode, it does those scene selections for you automatically. Picture quality is incredible, but I suppose with 10 mega pixals. It takes great motion shots too. For what it offers, I consider it affordable. Paid $159 at Target.

Did you take any fireworks shots or night shots with this camera? I have an older Kodak Easy Share and I want to get a new thinner camera, too, but I want one that will take good night pics, as mine won't. I quit trying to take night pics, as they just come out awful.

We haven't been anywhere for fireworks with it yet. One thing I did do with it was walk around the house in the dark and taking pictures using the flash and the pictures were unbelievable. It was like it was bright as day and colors really came through. My sister in law couldn't believe the pictures coming from this Kodak as she is a Sony person. I also took great indoor pictures of our dog running around, something our old Kodak didn't do well. Indoor motion. Also don't get rid of the old charging docs or printer docs because it still works on ours.

Cameras suck the life out of batteries quickly. It's best to use rechargeable AA's if you have that type of camera. On the plus side, if you're out and about and your batteries suddenly die, you can buy a pack of AA's nearly anywhere. With a camera with a dedicated battery, you can't do that....unless you want to pay $40-$50 for an extra one.

The FLASH on cameras sucks the life out of batteries faster than anything. Everyone should learn how to turn off the flash on their cameras and only use it when really necessary and beneficial - I'm always amazed at the sheer number of people standing in the hub taking pictures of the castle at night with their tiny P&S cameras and flashing away - the flash is only good for a few feet and the castle is 100 yards away - waste of battery!!!! It is doing NO GOOD AT ALL! :confused3

LCD screens are the next biggest drain, but they are not nearly as bad in modern cameras as the flash. A flash is only going to do any good if your subject is within about 6 feet at most - otherwise turn it off and your batteries will last a lot longer! :thumbsup2

I was a Kodak fan. Except they did not take good indoor/low lighting pictures. I have the dock and everything. It's great to know that I don't have to buy all new stuff for a new camera. I am going to check out this Kodak. Great Thread :yay:

I had been using a Nikon coolpix L1 for the past 4 or 5 years and I loved it (still do) but I wanted something smaller to take on our cruise this summer (although I will probably take the nikon for snorkeling shots). I did a TON of research on Cnet.com and I bought a recent edition of Consumer Reports which reviewed digital cameras. I ended up with the Canon SD880. It was rated number 1 by Cnet for compact cameras and number 2 or 3 by Consumer Reports. I haven't got to do too much with it yet but I like it so far. I like that it doesn't use double As also.

They have this Kodak at Target on clearance for $130.

I just bought a kodak easy share 10 mpx with a large view area. It is very thin and easy to use and it takes really good pictures. Mine is pink and I'll be using it for our trip on Saturday.

I bought this camera recently and I'm quite happy with it. It is simple to use and it takes very nice pictures.

Let us know what you buy. I'm interested to know if its the M1033 model thats on clearance, as this is a newer model and its already discounted?

That's the model I saw on clearance at my Target this week. It was a red one. I'm still thinking about buying one. I need a smaller one and I would like one that takes night time pictures. My Kodak is an older one and it doesn't take good night time pictures.

Anyone have an opinion on Sony cameras?

DW and I both have a sony Cybershot. 7.2 MP. (DSC-W120) Small and lightweight. we both upgraded with a 4gb memory. I can take (even on a good res) 1200 shot before downloading to the laptop. And it takes an o.k short movie. (I got the barge and light show from the balcony of the poly last trip!)

It is small enough that I can put it on a pouch on my belt, and perfect for vacations where I don't want to take along my bigger cameras and all the lens, etc.

I set it to point and shoot (AND TURN OFF THE FLASH!!!) and one of the built in programs will actually set the f stops for indoor "no flash" photos that come out pretty good!

Hey all!

I have a Casio EXLIM - it's a couple years old and 7.2 mp. I purchased the Casio because my neighbor had one, and it took amazing action shots - the shutter is so fast for such a tiny little camera.

It records video with sound, and the battery life is outstanding... my last Disney trip, I took almost 2G of pictures and video and only had to charge one night. It's a small lithium battery - not much bigger than an SD card - and non-OEM can be purchased for under $20 on Amazon or eBay.

It has VERY quick start up, so I rarely miss a shot - and when you press the button to take a picture, 'LO! It takes one right then (my old Nikon CoolPix did NOT do this).

I've handled Sonys, Canons, Nikons and one Kodak --- none of them have been overly fabulous outside @ night. The Sony and my Casio fared the best on fireworks --- I can't remember the version of the Sony, but it wasn't tiny... about the size of a hershey bar and about 1/2 inch thick (I relate everything in candy sizes).

I love my camera, because of it's teeniness and ease of use, but am now ready to step up to a simple-to-use SLR/fake SLR... I am frightened of the money tho!!!

I've sold cameras for a living and I also own quite a few. In my experience, Canon takes the best daytime shots, but isn't much fun during low light. Sony and Panasonic are great low-light cameras. Pentax and Olympus are decent cameras, but you can do better. I wouldn't touch a Kodak with a ten-foot pole. I am not exaggerating, almost every single Kodak I sold (which admittedly weren't many) was returned. Think I might have butchered the tenses there. :rotfl: I primarily use my Canon SD880IS right now, but I use an Olympus Evolt 420 SLR for the parks when I know I'm going on wet rides, due to it being pretty much waterproof. I think for your needs OP, you should get an SD1000, 1100 or 1200, depending on what you can find. If you can afford it, look into the SD870 or SD880, as they are stabilized.

I own 5 digital camera's the Canon sd500 is a great camera takes awesome photos. It is an older model it is my 3rd canon.

Canon get a thumbs up from me :thumbsup2

The downside to alot of camera's are the batteries most better canons take ion rechargeable they can be expensive as you need to buy a name brand replacement or extra because the no name kind DO NOT hold a charge, believe me I have tried several.

My newest camera a finepixZ is a much more user friendly camera, I take that with me for most daytime shots at the park.

something you might want to consider is one of the new waterproof cameras. Especially for the park, one less thing to worry about(getting it wet)

Fuji has a great one Walmart has it for around $170 and I saw it on amazon for $160

it also uses sdhc cards which are cheap you can get a 8 gig for as little as $20

Fuji's take awesome pics I have a fuji also and think the colors are very true do not use it much anymore because it was my first digital and only has 3 mp.

Just checked amazon's site, sorry can not post links yet but the canon's are showing a special you buy one now and you get 2 free sd cards.

What model # Casio Exlim do you have? I checked out two yesterday, they both said Exlim, but had different model #'s. I'm running out of time since our trip is Sept. 19th. Thanks.
