what is school bread???

...what is school bread?

Heaven!!

I don't think there are nuts in it, but I'll let someone else answer that question. There is coconut, so that might be an issue.

We had heard about it on these boards and decided to stop in and check it out. OMG!! It is huge and just so yummy. Hubby and I each got one and I think it took us 3 days to eat the whole thing, but it was just so good.

If I remember correctly, and it has been a couple years, it's like a big fat custard filled donut topped with icing and coconut.

I can't believe I've never tried school bread. I'm making it my mission to try it in October!

Schoolbread = overrated. After reading about it for years, I finally tried it in Norway's bakery. Talk about a let down...
but why, is it call.."school :teacher: bread? did a teacher
Because it is NOT a donut NOR a pastry, but it IS BREAD. It tastes like bread, it has bread texture, it is BREAD.

I'm sure I'll be flamed for such blasphemy as criticizing school bread, but I think this bread is severely overrated....

That's the school bread on the left, and the sweet almond pretzel on the right (both from the Kringla Bakeri in Norway/Epcot World Showcase)

We like both. The school bread definitely tastes like bread - but the cream filling & the coconut on top make it sweet. They used toasted coconut now, so it looks more light-brown on top now.

Someone said there is chocolate on this. I don't see it from this picture. Can someone confirm whether there is any chocolate in or on the school bread. My partner doesn't eat chocolate. Strange I know!:confused3 Really, who doesn't like chocolate. Oh, btw, that was a rhetorical question. I do like to look out for things she might like. She does like coconut.

No chocolate, it's simple icing:)
Here in Norway we often eat Skolebrød (School bread), it's given to children in their school lunches, hence the name:)

I've grown up with them, and always make them for birthdays and family dinners:)

I use

100g butter.
100g sugar.
4dl milk.
700g flour.
1ts Cardamom.
50g yeast.
Vanilla custard.
Icing (Caster sugar and water.)
Coconut shavings.

Melt the butter, and blend in the milk. Blend in the yeast, stir well. Then add the sugar and cardamom. Slowly add the flour, sift it. When the doug is firm enough, let it set for about 40minutes or until it's doubled in size. Part the doug in even sized balls, and make a dent in the center. Add a tablespoon of custard in the dent, and let it stand for about 15-20minutes. Heat the oven to about 225 degrees C. Coat them with a thin layer of milk, and set them in the oven for about 15 minutes. Let them cool completely. Take some icing on them, and roll them in coconut shavings.

We also often make Solskinnsboller (Sunshine bread), which is cinnamon rolls with icing and custard:)

i could eat a big ol' tub of the schoolbread custard filling....

easily.

I tried it for the first time in May and mine was no where near as pretty as the one in the picture. I heard they changed it recently and it is not as good as it used to be. I don't remember it having any chocolate on it, just similar to a custard filled donut but more bread like. And there was coco ut and custard on top, but definately not as much as that picture.

As we tour Epcot we plan (the four of us) to use a QS or snack credit and maybe some OOP and split our meals four ways. This school (or however the heck you spell it) bread is going on our must try list.

Do any of you have any other must tries in Epcot?

Do you remember when you took that picture? That's the way the school bread used to look when it was yummy. The past few years, what I've seen has been about 1/2 that size with some sort of caramel/light brown type icing with toasted coconut. I've stopped getting them because they are now really dry (maybe it's the smaller size?) and they've had maybe a tablespoon of pastry cream in them, if we were really lucky. My last trip to Epcot I didn't even bother to get one because the previous two I had bought were awful.

Norway bakery people - please bring back the original school that the poster has in this picture!

Um, this picture, in fact this thread itself, is over 2 years old - might want to find a more recent photo to base discussion on....

Truthfully it really is great and one of those few things in life that lives up to the hype.
