My girlfriend called me and she was telling me about her trip to the Dr's. She likes her Dr' alot, etc. She said they got to talking and she had mention something that her DH had gotten her. She said her Dr. made a remark about her being: A Kept Woman!

All of you please tell me just what is a kept woman?

A kept woman is one who stays at home and does not work. "Kept at home" is the mentality behind it.

I don't hear it much, but I admit, I love being a kept woman ;)

I thought it meant someone who was a mistress and whose expenses were paid by her boyfriend.

I always took it to mean a trophy wife who doesn't/isn't allowed to work, but is compensated VERY well! :thumbsup2

The way I'd always understood it was that it meant a woman who (in essence) was totally dependent on her husband/boyfriend/whatever for finances, etc.

That was a lot more accurate than the one I posted. I didn't even think that post would've gone through since I keep gettin server busy.

I've never heard it meaning anything about a misstress. Only a wife who does not work at all and all her expenses have been paid for.

I always took it to mean "well kept" or spoiled as in having a "sugar daddy", not that she necessarily stays at home, or doesn't have a job, but just like she's "well maintained", wants for nothing, etc. The kind of woman who lives in luxury due to her DH/DF/DBF etc. -gets expensive jewelry, cars, manicures, etc.

I have always been under the impression that the woman is the mistress of a married man. He kept her at another location, separate from his wife and family and paid all of her expenses to just wait for him to visit her.

Whatever the exact shade/nuance was intended, it was a very inappropriate comment!

I was referred to as a "kept woman" by my family. Guess I was. :rolleyes1

So that's how you got that gorgeous car in your signature...... :rotfl:

Hey - you work it, Sister!! :thumbsup2 I've probably done worse for that Yugo my DH bought me years ago....... :lmao: ;)

I think Clarabelle has it right. The phrase is mostly used in a facetious manner. Unless of course you ARE a mistress and are being subsidized by your ilicit lover. ;)

Ding, Ding, Ding!!! We have a winner!

Pam is correct, at least what I always been told. Sounds like a real classy doctor. (insert sarcasm)

kept wom·an (plural kept wom·en)
noun

Definition:

woman supported by lover: a woman who is financially supported by a lover, especially by a married man ( often considered offensive )

I didn't think it had anything to do with being a mistress, so I decided to look it up.

According to websters.com:

kept woman

n : an adulterous woman; a woman who has an ongoing extramarital sexual relationship with a man [syn: mistress, fancy woman]

That's what all of those trashy romance novels that I devoured when I was a young and impressionable teenager implied. :teeth:

I need to find the novels you read!!! Mine never had anything like that!!!

And I find it interesting that some people have different meanings. Among my crowd it was meant for married women who are not working at all. All my friends call me a kept woman.

So I never thought it was offensive... guess we were wrong. I still would laugh if someone said it to me though. I guess growing up thinking it was the non-working woman, that there is nothing to be offended about.

Would you think less of me if I said that I had several boxes of them up in my attic??? :rolleyes1

I personally have been called far worse when people realize that I got my present job by sleeping with the boss!! :lmao: (Well -- he is my *husband* ;) )

My question to all of you woman on this thread. Is there such a thing as a kept man? If so how do you get a cush job like that and what are the requirements? Talk about the unfairness of it all. :guilty: Sometimes you woman don't realize how lucky you are at times. :rotfl:
I was single until I was 29 and I think I would have allowed some elderly woman to spoil me with lavish gifts, maybe a DVC membership that had 500 yearly points. Cars, big screen tv's, season tickets to the Dallas Cowboys. I can dream, can't I?

of course not Pammykins!!!! I would say "send them my way!!!!" instead!!!!

As for sleeping with the boss... I see nothing wrong with that. Technically I call Luis my boss and I don't care :p

I would say there is such thing as a "kept man" but I see those more as "boy toy" types :teeth:
