It seems like every other thread anymore seems to be - how can I get something for nothing?

How can I sneak into a better pool?
Can I sneak in CL guests?
How can I get a free upgrade?

Whatever happened to you get what you pay for and if magic happens it's just that - "Magic".

Sorry to vent it just seems to be getting over the top lately?

Oh and if you say you shouldn't try to get something for nothing - then you're a"snob"!

I say it's "the era of entitlement", or maybe jsut people now see it as being thrifty, trying to maximize their dollar at the expense of others?

I agree with you, I too have been noticing more and more of these threads. I shake my head whenever I come across one. I love the how can I better my chances for a really great upgrade threads :sad2:. I go to Disney not expecting anything less than what I have already paid for, however, if we do happen to get an upgrade, then it makes our magical trip even more magical.

well said! I always book a room catagory I can be happy with and if magic happens, that's great!

Robyn - well said.

I have been noticing this as well.

We have booked CL rooms, waterview rooms and also standard view rooms for our past trips. We expect to get the room category we have paid for, anything else is simply magical :wizard:.

Well, I blame the DIS! Just kidding :)

We booked our GV room at the Polynesian happily expecting to have a view of grass and trees, but then I kept reading posts about getting upgraded to TPV or CL. Then, I found myself lying in bed thinking, "hmmmm, wouldn't it be great if they would do that?"

I decided to turn those thoughts off. We are so happy that we are blessed to be able to make this trip. I'll enjoy my GV every minute!

:goodvibes Disney is magic for me, and picking what I want is the key. If magic happens, it happens. I've had some great trips because of this concept. So i understand the frustration.:hippie:

Robyn,

YES! I agree entirely. The whole upgrade/freebie strategy issue gives me a yucky feeling. I don't even want to think about it. I mentioned this before on another thread, but I want to arrive, check in, and enjoy. I've already talked about it too much - yuck!

On a related note, my husband and I thought this was funny, and demonstrates your point. We aren't really into this, but we gave in to the CM pressure on the phone last trip. We celebrated our GAD volunteer work, so I made note of that on our ADRs and named each of our 3 boys a "guest of honor" for two ADRs each. The CMs recognized our youngest with a cupcake and comments/questions twice. When our two pre-teen boys were the "guest of honor," no such luck for them. They are very good kids, but for a few seconds, you would have thought their vacation was revoked and they were kicked off property! And they don't even like cupcakes anyway!! They recovered quickly, because we were literally laughing at them pouting about their lack of free cupcakes. They got it, they laughed too, lesson learned.

It definitely is a bit much these days. Some seem to think their dollar is more important than someone else's. Or that they've had a worse year and deserve it more than someone else. Sure, money comes more easily to some and sure, have had a better year than some. However, the bottom line is that you should pay for what you can afford and will be happy with and if they sprinkle you with pixie dust... GREAT!:goodvibes

Well said. I too book a room with the view I can afford and expect nothing else. I have been to Disney many times and have never received an upgrade which is fine by me. I live by the theory "you get what you pay for" so I am never disappointed.

And the CM know. Many many of them read the DIS and know"all these tricks". I was discussing this last week with a CM.
She told me she often had to stop reading because many things she read were so unfair she got really upset.

Hi xxxxxxxx I know you are reading this. :wave2:

::yes:: I agree totally.

Getting something for nothing is fun!

The first time we stayed at GF, we were upgraded to GF RPC. We really enjoyed it, and have booked CL rooms ever since. So, it was a win/win for Disney. We were also once upgraded to a two-bedroom suite. That was lux! And, great fun! We didn't ask for these upgrades, they just happened.

Having said that, Disney often upgrades people. And, it is Disney's hotel and Disney's right to do so. We can resent it, saying, "I paid for my room, why should those interlopers get an upgrade and be drinking my beer and eating my olives". But, we don't own the CL lounges -- Disney does!!!

If someone wants to ask for an upgrade, I see absolutely nothing wrong with it. What's the harm?

As for using pools at other resorts, if it's not allowed, then fine. Comply with the rules. But, I see no harm in asking if friends staying at another hotel can join us for the afternoon at our pool. Big deal.

And, as I said on another thread, CM's have told us to feel free to have others in our party join us in the lounge. It was only one time, and we didn't actually do it, but again it's Disney's lounge and Disney's CMs.

We on this board are not the pool police, the lounge guards and the upgrade controllers!

If all of this is no big deal to you or your family why don't you go to your friends hotel and swim there or use the free food at there lounge?

Getting something for nothing IS fun, but I think the OP created this thread about people automatically expecting the upgrades and freebies and posting about their "vacation being ruined" when it doesn't happen. Part of it being "magic" is that it's spontaneous and not expected. I personally don't have a problem with people asking for an upgrade, but I do have issue with people who make a huge deal about not getting a free upgrade just because someone else posted on the Dis that they got a free upgrade. I also have issue with the "you didn't pick my child" factor, but that's a whole other thread.

I think you may be missing the point.

Magical upgrades are wonderful and magical!

We've been lucky enough to be upgraded three times. Once at the Polynesian from gv to TPV, once at BC from standard to gv cl, and once at YC from standard to gv cl. The upgrade at the BC was definitely the most magical and memorable. We had treated our whole family - all our kids, one dil, one sil, grandchildren and my mom. 4 rooms, ddp, tickets with parkhoppers, airfare and spending money. When we were upgraded to cl I cried because I knew my Mom wouldn't ever be back to Disney and the two older kids who are married with children of their own are young and could never afford a vacation like this.

Of course now we are hooked on cl!

We have booked gv and tpv rooms at the GF, gv and tpv rooms at the Poly, waterview rooms at YC and waterview and cl rooms at BC. Whatever we can afford at that time we book and aren't expecting anything else. Are we thrilled if we get upgraded - or course. But never in a million, zillion years would I ask for that. To me that just seems nervy, and definitely takes away the magic.

As for the pool police - well call me selfish but again I pay for the resort I want and that includes the pool. I don't want to have trouble finding a seat or a lounge chair because non-paying guests of guests are using them.

I agree with the op about getting what you pay for and not trying to cheat the system. I do think there are exceptions to some rules though. Not everything is always black or white. For example, When a poster mentioned sneaking two additional people in the club lounge I assume they were thinking that four are allowed in the room they booked and only two were staying there so maybe the other two could access the lounge because these two were staying on site as well.

Really, companies do things to make a large profit. One thing comes to mind is Disney charging a l0 year old as an adult. ( I'm sure there are a lot of other examples) Just wondering why we accept this from businesses and when individuals try and get the most for their money they sometimes get criticized. Again, cheating no but being a smart consumer absolutely.

So what? We know the rules and accept them.
We stayed for ten days at CL with the Deluxe dining plan. Our niece was with us,a ten year old, and she had to pay also 70 Dollar a day for the dining plan.
She ordered every single day the kids menu what is about ten, twelve dollars.

That was 60 dollar a day we just threw out the window. But we knew the rules upfront and obeyed them although she is very tiny and we could have easily sneaked her in for ten.
If we could not agree with these rules or could not afford it we would find a hotel that did and there are plenty.
