following the horrific terror attack in Orlando has there been any noticable change in security at wdw or dvc?

Visitors need to think. We were in Epcot a month ago, in France. A lone backpack was lying on the walk. No owner in sight. People are eating (Food and Wine) around this lone backpack. So I said, does anyone know who owns this? No answer. I said, I would move to another place were I you. Then I found a security guard to check it out. Turns out a visitor left the pack there, went to get food, and finally came back. Really people, in this day and age you don't do that stuff!! And yes...the scenario is usually (and unfortunately) some jerk just left his/her backpack there, but I think the world has now proven you never know. I'm hyper aware of this as I was a corporate security director in a major company handling emergency planning/crisis management etc etc. So ... off my rant. People. You all need to observe and think and say something. P.S. same for DS. If you see something, go to any store to have security called. They are all over that place. Say something.

Once, outside the bakery in HS, there was a random black back pack sitting there. While we sat there, a security person with a dog appeared, sniffed it and then picked it up. This was years ago, I think now they handle these things differently.

I certainly hope everyone is going through the scanners now. Last trip in March, it seemed like only a handful of people (maybe 1 in 20) were selected to walk through them. So sad to think the place where we feel comfortable and have made so many memories could be a target.

Chuck correctly closed another thread because of questions about specific security measures in place at WDW. Not that any of us actually know, but if we did, it would certainly be nuts to post anything. I think a permissible answer would be that Disney has a lot of security, both obvious and not. If that's not enough for someone...sorry.

To me, inside the gates of the theme parks is about as safe as you can get in a large venue with tens of thousands of people. I'd compare the safety level to that of a baseball park, except that a ballpark is going to have both real police and EMS personnel onsite with no other responsibilities except the safety of the crowd.

Now...Disney Springs, and the parking lots at the theme parks? Hmmm. I'm less comfortable with those. But many large malls would have less security and a lot more potential targets.
There's also not much security at the resorts, but those are not target-rich environments, and there is safety in low numbers.

Reports on FB that everyone, bagless or not, is being sent through the scanners.
Not true. We are at Disney now and went to magic kingdom at park opening. We only had our bags checked, metal detectors were still random selection.

Long time visitors to the Parks will notice a subtle increase in security features at the entry turnstiles, but its still not that intrusive. Between our last trip in December 2015 and our current trip here in June, there are three things I've noticed that are different:

1. There are many more security guards doing bag checks at all the Parks;

2. The security guards are much more thorough on searching through each and every bag. It seems like every zippered pocket on a backpack is opened, every container inside a bag is felt or opened. The end result is that the guards are taking longer to go through each bag, but this is mitigated somewhat by #1 above;

3. Guests are randomly selected to step through a metal detector. Overall, very few people go through this extra check.

One word of advice I would give everyone is "Help the security guards and fellow guests by having your bags opened and all pockets on your bag unzipped when going through the bag checks." This will help the process go by a little faster.

Edited to add the clause in red above.

I would add, that they are there to help keep us save, don't be a wise a-- or give them a hard time if you have a long wait. They are trying to help us have a Magical Day!

Just passing along information from a FB group from yesterday. Never said I was there. Nor did I say this would be permanent policy going forward...

Must reply to an unlocked post on the wonderful thing our mods did.... :)

A similar thread was locked by a Mod, with the phrase "Loose lips sink ships". Folks? I have not heard that phrase since my PARENTS used it, in the 1950's.
It came from WWII - our last DECLARED war. Good for our mods.... we could learn a LOT from History :). And we really SHOULD let Disney do the best they can, and sort of shut up. ANY data, regarding HOW we observe WDW Security reacting, could end up RIGHT in the hands of the NEXT terrorist. Let's give them NOTHING....

Just me - like my folks in the 50's? I don't want to talk about this anymore. I want to clam up, deny data to terrorist animals, then cheer when I see America put a bullet thru their head :).

All personal opinion - I'm not right, you aren't wrong, I will not be replying to any quotes....

Disney has some of the best security measures in the world, they train others. But nothing is 100% and surely we all realize that. And I agree with Chuck that no way would I share what those measures are on a public forum.

Going to close this thread, too. Can't see an upside to keeping it open and this is not a DVC topic.
