What is a reasonable fee for adopting a dog?

Well, we've kind of decided no more dogs for a while after ours pass, but if I were to get another dog. . .

It's about $75 to adopt from the local shelter group and that includes spay/neuter, I think. I'd haunt and make sure everyone knew what I was looking for (herding dog mix, intelligent, energy level unimportant, no more than 50lbs in size). Then about $1200-$1500 to send the dog to the Monks of New Skete. Another $300 for a local trainer to help us follow up. Laugh at me if you will, but I'm going to have a well-trained puppy!

I've heard of adoption fees up to $350 at reputable rescues but, remember, not all rescues are good. IMO, $1500 is way out of line. Holy smokes, Batman, are you looking at a certain place in California that charges the earth, has way too many neglected dogs, has been investigated several times for animal neglect, and makes you buytheir (expensive) food for the life of the dog? I think that place should lose its 501 (c) 3 status because it is a very good example of a very bad rescue organization.:sad2:

As a Great Dane lover, I know exactly which "rescue" you're referring to. They make me sick. :(
