Lots of people talk about boiled peanuts? What is it? What do you do with it? What does it taste like? :confused3

Mmm...boiled peanuts (pronounce bowled peanuts LOL).

Boiled peanuts are green peanuts boiled. You just shell them and eat them (the juice is salty tasting). They don't have them up here in NY and they are one of the first things we buy when we go home (Steve's Peanuts). Now I want boiled peanuts... :guilty:

From what I've read on the threads today ... somethin' I'm never gonna try. ;) :crazy2:

What did you read? Boiled peanuts are yuuuuummmmmm!!! Now I want some too!

I think that you have to be from the south to love them. :) Now that I'm far from home when I bring them home and have others try them I've yet to have someone like them. :confused3: Oh well more for me! I think they are wonderful. They are best when they are homemade like Angela mentioned but I'll settle for cans now as that's the easy way to get them home. They are so yummy but I think it's the consistency that throws people off. I remember my mom making a huge pot of them and eating them the second that they were ready and they were nice and warm. :)

I think the ones in the can taste pretty good, but I agree that the home cooked ones are better. I like them a little crunchy and the ones in the can are usually soft.

Why, it's tasty goodness...there's not much better than sitting on the porch (or couch or chair or car or anywhere for that matter) with a pan of warm boiled peanuts and a bag to throw the shells in. My family likes them very salty, and boiled for at least 2 hours. That makes them very mushy, which to me is the best way to get them!

Not all Southern's like them, as DH is every bit as southern as me if not more, but he cannot stand them.

Next time you are in Orlando, if you have a car, check out a flea market. There are usually a couple of stands that sell freshly boiled peanuts. I know Daytona Beach Flea Market definitely has a couple of booths. Made the drive back to NC much much easier!

Oh they are sooo goood! Gotta be warm and salty and kinda mushy! Had some today at DS6's birthday party! (it was the family party, not little kids). I'm glad there are leftover, but they're not warm!

Alternate pronunciations: "bald" peanuts and bo-yelled peanuts!

Canned.... blasphemy!

I don't like them--wet and mushy.

but they are what they sound like--peanuts that have been boiled.

If I want a mushy peanut--I'll have some peanut butter ;).

Sorry to blaspheme the boiled peanut to all you boiled peanut lovers :(.

I adore southern food, even though I've never lived there. Give me some biscuits & gravy, grits and sweet tea any day! But I've never had boiled peanuts. In fact, I've never even seen them. But that doesn't mean I'll never try them. I'll try (almost) anything once!

Ummmm, I could use some boiled peanuts right now! They are a favorite with my family. Last year on the way to a family reunion we stopped off at a roadside stand and I bought two bags. I gave one to my sister as I went by my parent's car. My son and nephew were in our car, begging us for peanuts, which we were dribbling back to them a few at a time. We stopped somewhere and my niece (in the other vehicle) just had to wave 'her' bag at them out the window. We almost had a mutiny!;)

As a fan of dry roasted nuts, mushy boiled peanuts don't sound too appealing.

Ba-lled peanuts...an aquired taste. From a can...that is just wrong!

The roadside stands that used to sell them all seem to be disappearing. Miss those more than the peanuts.

okay, now that I know what boiled peanuts are, they don't sound to tasty. Maybe a picture would help. Does anyone have a picture?

In addition, if boiled peanuts are peanuts boiled in water with salt, what is peanut butter?

It boiled peanuts like peanut butter?

Can you put boiled peanuts on bread?

I am soo unconfused :confused3:

if you put roasted peanuts in a food processor you get peanut butter.

Boiled peanuts are really quite soggy....most of the Southerners I know put them whole in their mouth to get the juice (salty peanut water) out of them.

I think you can make peanut butter with non roasted peanuts...hazelnuts....just about any kind of nut! (Don't go there!)

I personally don't really like boiled peanuts...but I do keep trying them! You should see the roadside stands that have them boiling in huge oil drums! For some reaon I always think of boiled peanuts and picking out Halloween pumpkins! Must a fall kind of thing from childhood.

They're not like peanut butter and you don't put them on bread. They are eaten like a regular peanut in the shell. The difference is that after boiling the shell and peanuts are softer. I prefer the taste of a boiled peanut to a regular peanut, but it's hard to describe the taste :confused3 . Mostly they are cooked in salt and water, but (particularly in Louisiana) people like to add crab boil and/or Tony Chachere's seasoning to make them spicy.

Could eat my weight in boiled peanuts....and probably have! For anyone wanting to try them, look in the produce section of your grocery store. Usually there are bags of RAW peanuts and all you do in put them in a pot of salted, boiling water. You don't have to boil them to the point of being mushy....DH and I both like ours left a bit firm. By the way, I dislike roasted peanuts or the kind sold in cans. Only BOILED will do! :teeth:

I would describe them as kind of a "bean"y taste/texture. We moved to FL from Ohio, and the boiled peanut thing was a total culture shock for us :teeth:

:faint: Spicy wet bean like texture peanuts.
