What is 1 unpopular opinion on Exercise/Fitness you have?

Resistance training and HIIT are not "the exercises that work for everyone no matter what".

I've lost about 65lbs in a little over 2 years and I've done it with changes to the food I eat and walking nearly every day.

As soon as I added resistance training and HIIT training I could no longer fit into some of my clothes that had been lose on me just 6 weeks prior.
Steady state cardio like walking is what works for ME.

My unpopular opinion is that I don't need to know that you went to the gym today. I'm glad you see yourself as some sort of fitness guru, and I will totally come get you if I need a tractor tire rolled down the street or my car hoisted up. But we don't need to rehash your gym routine every.freakin.day.

ETA: we also don't need to discuss what you are eating every single day either. Food-obsessed people get on my last nerve.

You should not stop eating things you love.

Every time someone I know stops drinking pop cold turkey or won't eat anything unhealthy seems to fail very quickly and then binges on the things they stopped eating.

For me what works is actually that good old lesson of moderation.

I eat fruit for breakfast, veggies for lunch, and whatever I want for dinner.

I drink about 120oz of water each day but if I'm eating pizza for dinner well then I'm having pop with it.

If my sister asks me to go out for ice cream I'm going out for ice cream.
If dessert is offered to me the next day I will likely say no thanks and I won't feel sad that I didn't eat it because I just had ice cream and know that I really don't need a piece of cake that day.

Exercising is not fun. But dancing is. And with a partner it's a blast and gives your brain exercise too.

Workout partners are distracting.

…. Also avocados are gross. Stop making things like pudding and ice cream out of squishy grass flavored mush.
100% YES on both counts! And while we’re at it Cauliflower is not an acceptable substitute for mashed potatoes, tater tots, rice or pizza crust.

My unpopular opinion: Carbs, fat and sugar are not the debil.

If you really want to see results you need to do a combination of intense exercise and eat healthy. A slow saunter around the block or slow rotation on the recumbent bike in the gym with no resistance isn't doing much. It is better than sitting on the couch doing nothing but it isn't going to really increase your fitness.

:thumbsup2 The best exercise you can do for your abs is the push away. It is done by pushing away from the table before you have gorged yourself.
You lost me at “intense exercise”

I can.not. stand. yoga.

I have no patience for it... the whole time I'm doing it & holding all those freaking poses for however many seconds, I'm thinking, "There are so many other things I should be doing."

DH & I have done the Beach Body P90X program a few times, & the yoga day was my absolute least favorite day - it was also the longest. Every other routine was 45 minutes to an hour. But the yoga? An hour & half of my time! Hated it!!!

I do agree, however, that, while cardio is good for you, you really need a cardio + some kind of weight lifting program. And you can't out-exercise a bad diet.

Yoga causes me stress. :rotfl2:

I used to totally agree with you on the yoga. I did P90x as well and dreaded yoga day!! Now I love it and here’s the difference. I do hot sculp yoga three days a week. The room is usually between 95-100 and we are going through all the poses with weights. If we are in warrior two pose we will do upward rows, hammer curls while in chair pose, etc...we even do some cardio in the middle. When the 60 minutes are over I am soaked. For the first time I am toning my body like never before.

I will spin my unpopular opinion off of yours.

I think fitness/nutrition obsessed people, the ones who are at the gym every single day, then running every single day, etc and harp on talking about that and their oh so amazing dietary habits but little else because getting their body to look certain ways is their world (especially if their idea of nutrition is protein shakes, or juices, or anything that is actually pretty limited to the same few items over and over) are suffering from mental illness that is similar to anorexia or bulimia, and it is often not good for their bodies or their minds. But it is socially acceptable and even often social approved, so they don't tend to get help.

I'm not sure how unpopular this is, but taking a day off from exercise is good for you as over-exercise can induce inflammation. Your body needs to heal in between workouts. Just be passively active on your off days.

At this point science has demonstrated that this isn't unpopular opinion, it is demonstratable fact.

Another demonstratable fact is running is not bad for your knees.

That is if you believe in the whole science thing of course.

Oh man! I also HATED the P90X yoga day!

I walk 15 minutes miles on the treadmill, really started doing it for about an hour Daily since January, and dropped 20 pounds, without changing anything else.

That's fantastic! I hope I was clear in my original post saying that any exercise is good exercise, even cardio (to a point). But people get SO hung up on the number on the scale. If you're measuring fitness, the number on the scale isn't anywhere near as important as body composition. There's a widespread belief that just doing lots of cardio is going to get you "in shape". Again, exercise is good. However, people who do lots of cardio and no weight training, especially when combined with a restrictive diet, become what is known as "skinny fat". You may like the look in the mirror, fit into a certain size clothes, or like the number on the scale but you'll still have a very unhealthy body mass index. I'm not implying that everyone needs to hit the gym every day and bench press 300lbs while grunting as loud as they can (that drives me nuts by the way). Not in the least. The amount/type/frequency of the weight training would be defined by your goals.

Again, I can't be more clear in saying I think it's great if you're being active, even walking. It's so much better than doing nothing. But IMO truly being fit can't happen by just doing a 4mph walk on a treadmill.

On that note, I always  every time I see one of those ads on TV for the lastest cardio machine where the model using it is shredded with muscle. It's such false advertising, it's sad.

If you don't "check in" it didn't happen.
