So ... I recently bought into BWV and only got about 100 points because that's all I really needed for WDW and DL. A trip for myself and maybe a friend or brother every 2 or 3 years. Perfect.

Yeah, right .... I listened to the podcast review of Aulani and am now pining for my first trip to Hawaii. Have even convinced my parents and my brother that Hawaii would be a wonderful place to go in early December 2012.

Problem ... I'll need at least 57 points more to get a 2 bedroom standard view or way more for other views (I'll have only 300 points - banked/current/borrowed. I won't even dream about a 3-bedroom.

I know I can rent those points but how does that actually work? Is it possible to book it before you have rented the points or do you pay for the points and then book it (what if there's no availability?).

What's the difference between renting points and transferring?

Or should I just book for 5 days and stay 2 days in a hotel somewhere else in Hawaii? That might actually be cheaper depending on the cost of 2 hotel rooms....???

Renting points is just renting a reservation. The original owner remains in control of the points.

Transferring points mean points for a specific use year are transferred into (or from) your account. You are in full control of the points (but its up to you to find availability to use those points). Note: it is against DVC regulations to receive compensation for a points transfer..
Transferred points retain their initial UY and home resort booking advantage. You would have to transfer Aluani points to book at 11 months with the transferred points, only.

I'm still torn on Aluani. It does look like Disney did everything right given that location, but its not necessarily the best island... But with a few tours it would be a proper Hawaii vacation.(The idea of their rainforest tour is twisting my arm)

Ideally you could do the remaining days on another island (ie see volcanos at evening, or black sand beaches..). But then you are adding flight costs (although HNL is not the only airport reached from the mainland.

When you rent points, you find someone who has points and ask them if such and such dates are available in such and such type of room. If they are, the owner of the points makes the actual reservation. You pay him/her for the reservation.

Your best option would be to find points from another member to transfer into your account. It is a very easy transaction. You would then be in control of your entire reservation.

Ahhh... ok. I get it now.

I guess I should figure out if those 2 days are worth acquiring the points for or just stay with the 5 days at Aulani and 2 days somewhere else.

Thanks guys. You are all a wealth of information for us newbies.

Don't forget that you can also rent up to 24 points from DVC when making reservations at 7 months or less. Based on what you said above, that isn't enough to completely fill your reservation, but it may help in some way.

If you are not up to changing hotels I would say a transfer. But I would 100% try a diff island for the other 2 days and see more of it. You will be paying per night, why not try something diff. ?

When you start looking for a transfer, make sure you get the right year points. They have to be the same as your current year points that you use for your reservation. You can't borrow transferred points, but you can bank them.

Regarding point transfers...

I'm new to DVC and not completely clear on transfering points. If it is against policy to recieve compensation for transfering points, what is the typical arrangement? Are people just doing this out of the goodness of their hearts because they have points that will be wasted, or is it typically an agreement that at some point, you will transfer an equal number of points back to the other party?

Obviously anything can be arranged, I suppose... but how does this typically work?

i'm guessing the typical arrangement violates official DVC policy.

If I can get the 5 days at Aulani, we'll probably spend some time before we get to Aulani island hopping or at least on another island. I actually have an Orlando timeshare that I can probably trade for a week with RCI but I'm not sure we want to be in Hawaii that long. I mean, we want to but I'm not sure we can take that much time off. LOL Buying another DVC contract isn't in the cards unless I win the lottery. :rotfl:

First things first .... try to get the 5 days at Aulani. I have to wait till May. :rotfl: In the meantime, i better read up on Hawaii. All I know about it is from watching Hawaii Five O and Magnum PI. :rotfl2:
