What happens when it rains?

As an international visitor from a reasonably wet place I'm very interested in why people wearr ponchos at WDW and not waterproof jackets? We were planning on putting our jackets in our backpacks. They are lightweight and fold up smallish

Waterproof jackets are fine, but it's typically awfully hot in Central FL (not bad Nov-March) and folks just don't want to pack them/carry them around. Some of us buy the super-cheap ponchos at discount stores for $1, use them once and dispose of them.

Agree! Buy disposable ponchos you can throw out after the rain. They will just stay wet anyway. Who wants to carry around wet ponchos?

We pack a poncho in our backpack & flip flops... When it rains we duck inside somewhere... Put on our ponchos, and take off our socks/sneakers & put on our flip flops.... Off we go... My daughter loves it.

We had one pretty good rainstorm when we were there in June. We just grabbed an iced coffee from the fountainview Starbucks and sat outside under cover watching the people run for the exits. It was fun.

Usually water falls from the sky. If you are outside with no umbrella or poncho you will get wet. Other then that not much. Now Thunder Boomers are a whole different thing.

We love the rain! As others have said we pull on the ponchos, change into better footwear for rain (crocs, flipflops) and enjoy a relatively empty park. If there's no Lightning we like to ride the peoplemover over and over again watching the mass exit from the park. One of my favourite memories is our 2009 trip. We were enjoying supper at Capt. Cook's planning to return to MK when the downpour happened. DH looked at me and said, "What do you want to do?" I said we're going back in! We deal with cold, clinging, sideways rain here all the time (Newfoundland, Canada) so the warm rain was not unpleasant. We walked through the turnstiles and just looked at the mass exit coming out. We continued up Main Street against the crowd leaving and walked on to everything we wanted that night and had a brilliant spot for Wishes. The parade was cancelled though because of the threat of lightning.
