What happens to BW points on 1/31/2042?

Hi all,

I know it is far off but I have never read definitively what happens on 1/31/2042.

Suppose I have 200 BW points with a Sept UY. So on 1/2041 I pay my MFs for 2041, but don't get my points unil 9/1/2041. Do I have until 9/1/2042 to use them, or are they gone as of 1/31/05?

If this is the case, I would guess either (a) I would be compelled to borrow all points and use them early; or (b) not pay the 2041 MF if I could not use my points before 1/31/2042 (now, I will be well into my 70s at that point so who knows what life would be like then anyway -- I am just talking about hypotheticals).

Thanks in advance for the help!

According to the contract, the ownership goes back to DVC.

If you did not pay the 2041 MF, you could not make a stay in 2041. Legally you would be obligated to pay them. I don't think there will be any stays after 1/31/42. This assumes DVC does not offer some kind of "extension deal".

Yes, that's true, but in my example, it is a Sept UY. So you would not get your points until 9/1/2041 anyway. So does that mean you get only 4 months to use them (assuming you don't borrow them)? What if you had a December UY?

Hey I'll be 99, but I plan to be like that old man on the Six Flags commercials.

There will not be enough units for everyone to get full points in 2041. There are likely only about enough units for members to use an average of just over half their points those last TWO years of 2040 & 41. Thus DVC will have to do something. The leading options are to prorate or a lottery or similar. Next would be a free for all with everyone battling it out and many losing points. A voluntary system MIGHT work depending on participation and they could do a hybrid. Regardless, I expect reduced fees accordingly. Don't think for a second they will extend the time to use the points. Even if they give members the option of an extention until 2054, which I now doubt, the same problem will exist then.

What would happen if they eliminated banking and borrowing before 2040? Wouldn't that mean there would be enough units for points? Also the Dec UY question hits right at home...what WOULD happen to us poor Dec people? If I pay my dues in January 2041 I don't get credited with my points until Dec 2041...it would seem in all fairness I should have until Dec 2042 to use them. I only be in my early 80's so I guess I should try and figure this one out... :confused3

I believe that you would be able to use your 2041 points between September 1, 2041 and August 31st, 2042.

But this is assuming that your last use year is slated to be 2041.

Gaaarsh! I don't know!!!

The system ends Jan 31, 2042 and after that there is no more DVC. Don't think for second Disney is going to float it so we can use the last few points.

As I've posted on other similar threads, this assumes no banking the last few years and likely no borrowing the last year or two. For everyone to have an OPPORTUNITY to use all their points, the system would have to run through likely May or June. Maybe someone can count it up or run an algebraic equation that would give the specific answer based on the number of points. And all exchange options will end up back with units reserved with points, so this wouldn't help either.

What might help is if DVC bails out of their points early, that and enough people who default or just don't go anymore, may be enough. Here's another way of looking at it. Assuming the number of points are spread pretty evenly over the 8 use years, the December points alone would be able to book almost the entire DVC system (at least 3/4 at 100% capacity) for Dec and Jan that last year.

Let's see 200 BWV with August uy/ and 250 OKW with Sept u/y. I think I will make a reservation at SSR. They don't end in 2042.

You won't be able to use those points at SSR after Jan 31, 2042 and possibly even before that. At least if they don't extend the entire system to teh 2054 date.

Do you mean to say that I could not make a reservation in December 2041 for SSR use in June 2042? I have used the points before they expire. If not OH WELL

If everybody keeps their contracts, their won't be enough units to go around for everyone to get full points in 2041, but do you think that everyone will? A lot of the people that bought them will be dead, and as much as their children will want to keep them, the last few years the membership dues may be so high that people don't see the value of paying them for the last couple of years and they just "let them go." I don't know if that will happen, but I'm guessing it might. It's one thing to pay dues now when you have years and years to use the points, but it might be another thing to people if the dues are high enough that they could go on vacation for about what the dues would cost anyway, and they would only have the points for a year or two more. I'm not sure if I'm explaining that well, but I think there may be people who just let their points go at the end.

d-r

I think that's what I was getting at. Even though many of us will either be dead or have long sold our points off, someone will be an owner in 2042. I think that DVC would not want people to start abandoning their points and fail to pay the MFs. So I would "think" DVC would do something to make sure it is worth it to the members in the last couple of years.

If today were 2040, and I was calling to use my points for next year, and was unable to get my usage, I can tell you DVC would not be getting my January MF and I am sure I would not be alone.

I am guessing that DVC would not want this to happen and would do something to make sure it does not.

At that point, it's not too likely DVC will even care who pays or doesn't pay. If you don't pay, you voluntarily remove yourself from the competition to reserve a room during the last year, so that could be a good thing for them. I do suspect DVC will only require members who want reservations to pay their dues in 2041. Let's face it, as long as there's enough $$$ coming in to pay the day-to-day expenses, that's all that's required at that point. Long term maintenance issues will be a moot point in 2041.

I have a December U/Y and asked my guide this question a few years ago. I was told that my last points would be received in December 2041 and I would still have the year to use them. DVC does not dissapear, rather stops issuing points on then end date.

That's an interesting statement by your guide. Did he/she point out where it says this in our paperwork? I've not noticed this in my docs, but I'd definitely like to see this happen.

This is a great "what if" topic of discussion and I love to see the different theories on it. One thing I think we can all agree on: DVC has never given out any "freebie" so any extensions or specials will surely cost the members in some way, shape or form. I am willing to bet that DVC hasn't given much thought to what happens in 2042 as of yet.

And realistically, that promise plus $2.50 will get you a bottle of soda at WDW. ;)

If it ain't in writing, it's meaningless. And right now the only thing in writing is the fact that ownership reverts back to DVC on 1/31/2042.
