What happens if one person in your party backs out of cruise after you make your final payment and does not go on cruise? Does that money become a credit? Does anyone know what happens in this case?

I think it depends how close to sailing and the type of cruise. Past a certain point they would lose their money unless they had insurance and a good reason for cancelling. I was told any refund goes back on the card it was purchased on.

The taxes for the cancelled person's cruise are generally refunded, but they will lose a portion of the cruise fare at a minimum. Check the cancellation schedule for your cruise to see the penalties. If there are only 2 people in a cabin and 1 person cancels (which happened to me twice) - the remaining passenger may have to pay a single supplement. The latter depends on how close the cancellation is to the departure date.

Also depends what kind of booking it was. We booked an OGT (oceanview guarantee) and when DH couldn't sail, we lost what he paid. Well..we got the taxes back.

If it's before the official paid-in-full date for the cruise, and you didn't book concierge or via a discounted rate "with restrictions" (IGT, OGT or VGT), then you simply cancel that guest and get all of your money for that passenger back.

It doesn't matter that you're paid in full, but rather if the official PIF date for the cruise has passed, after which there are cancellation penalties.
