What happens if Disney goes bankrupt?

WDW has other threat models, like AI or something like the holodeck or Westworld. If theme parks in general aren't cool anymore, that's a problem. Disney has been leading edge on things like this, like that AI experience in Disney Springs. But that doesn't mean the concept of theme parks can't be out-evolved.

WDW also depends on IP. Right now, Disney IP is the coolest, but that won't be true forever. And then there's general warming and the weather, which don't seem to be going great for FL today.

I am hoping for this. Another company or entity would buy the company or pieces. The current management is trying to destroy Disney, so bankruptcy would be a lifeline. We haven’t purchased Disney park tickets since before covid. We have many points and use them for UO or other properties. We are absolutely DISGUSTED with what Disney is doing to the company. I realize most people on these boards don’t agree with me, but it has been shown that my family is pretty representative on that. People have voted with their feet. Disney has manipulated and covered up their failing numbers for as long as possible and now it is hitting the fan. Good. What an absolute loser Bob Iger is. What an absolute failure of a human being.

No. Old Disney IP is the coolest. But anything they have produced over the last 3-5 years is absolute garbage and truly forgettable. We have stopped watching even. And they are working to destroy their old IP. Look at what they have done to Snow White. Complete joke.

Well, try the kids' programming on Netflix. It's even worse. They bought My Little Pony, and it's meh, I guess. Paw Patrol, Lego, Nintendo, Minions and HP. Disney owns everything else.

For all the awesome stuff out there for adults, Disney really cornered the market on kids -- for now.

Maybe. Or it goes the other way. Maybe as technology keeps advancing to the point where people long for the old days…which sounds very “damn kids get off my lawn” but honestly I feel many people are already starting to resent advanced technology and the problems it brings. I can see strolling down Main Street, walking frontierland, even enjoying the “future” of Tomorrowland being a comfort. I can see Disney parks almost having MORE appeal in this dystopian type future. And knowing Disney they won’t spend a penny to upgrade any rides so it’ll make everyone feel a ton of nostalgia when the rides keep breaking down!

OTOH, maybe the website would work?
Exactly. I think people don’t realize or forget how poor Disney’s website and tech is. I was just on the DCL boards talking about the medallions on Princess cruises. Wow. Puts Disney to shame with their lame, clunky, virtually useless (not to mention expensive) magicbands.

Ok this is really straightforward.

If Disney went Chapter 11, like the airlines repeatedly have, nothing would change at all. Their creditors would take over the company and continue to operate it. This is by far the more likely scenario.

But If Disney went Chapter 7, like Bed Bath and Beyond:

It’s important to note here that TWDC does not own DVC. We do. They own DVD and BVTC. So new development would cease, and we’d need a new booking platform, but we’d still own our timeshares.

Now From the standpoint of amenities, there would be some changes. Obviously the assumption here is that the parks would close or be sold off. For the DVC properties themselves, the changes would vary greatly. Resorts that are entirely deeded to their owners like OKW and SSR would see minimal disruption - the owners would have to hire a new group to oversee housekeeping, the restaurants, lifeguarding, and boat rentals, but once that was resolved, you could still go, swim, eat, etc.

At the split resorts, it becomes really important what’s in the contract. At BWV the feature pool is part of the contracted amenities, and whoever buys the hotel side of BWV could not eliminate DVC owner access to Luna Park Pool. At Poly, however, owners are promised nothing. They’re entitled to whatever the hotel side wants to give them which the hotel side is allowed to change at any time. So you could literally have no pool and no dining.

So basically you’re looking at probably 2 months of disruption in services (including potentially booking, housekeeping and desk staff) while new management gets hired, followed by a whole lot of questions as non-DVC things get sold off.

If Florida is underwater, or theme parks in general are worthless, maybe it's all worthless.

I can see my car in front of the house, so FL is not underwater yet!

Theme parks are not worthless - I'm having as much fun now as I did 30+ years ago... But some folks at Disney can probably use some business school classes and general reminders about the "lifetime value of a customer" vs squeezing every single penny from customers on one (and only/last) visit.

No resort is deeded to the owners - nor do we own DVC, we have a deed for usage rights to a share of a leasehold. TWDWC owns SSR and OKW and all other resorts.
