So now I'm reading If You can't Stand the Heat, a Poppy Markham culinary cozy mystery. It's OK, but not nearly as funny as I'd like. I'd really like some funnier cozy mysteries. Anyone have any recommendations?

I'm not sure exactly what a cozy mystery is, but have you tried Martha Grimes? While they are not laugh-out-loud funny like Janet Evanovich, they do contain subtle humor with quirky and interesting characters. Avoid Dust and anything written after than that, though.

Gone Girl is a really hot book right now and, for most of the way through, it's a pretty good page-turner. However, it is one of those books that holds a lot of promise and the ending 100% sucks.

Great. I was JUST about to push the button to buy it for vacation next week.

Anyone read Tigers in Red Weather? Saw a review and it looked interesting. Will be picking up from the library tonight.

Night Circus didn't appeal to me, either. So I borrowed it from the library just to give it a half-xxx chance. I LOVED it.

Anyone like Discover of Witches? I started it, but didn't get too into it. A friend said it got much better.

I have trouble with many cozy mystery serieses (serii? whatever the plural is of "series"), as I often get irritated with the main characters - don't know why. I've grown weary of the Diane Mott Davidson (caterer) ones, as well as Joanna Carl (chocolate) and Cleo Coyle (coffeehouse). Probably time to try some others!

I just finished Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness. It is the 2nd book, just released, in her "All Souls" trilogy.

I read the first one, "A Discovery of Witches", when it first came out, and while I thought it was OK, it didn't thrill me all that much. I thought it dragged a little and didn't hold my attention.

I just LOVED Shadow though - I think it was the historical aspect, both the time period and the actual historical people, that kept it so fascinating. Now I can't WAIT for book 3.

Anyways saw you were looking for some mystery series. A couple I've enjoyed that is not mentioned or not often is the Body Mover series, the High Heel Mystery Set(though I was really sick of the "heroine" by the last book!), and I just read a great free Nook book called Haunted on Bourbon Street. Considering it was free, I thought it was great and even purchased the second in the series.

I really thought I'd like The Night Circus-heck, I even wanted to like it.

On the reversal of that, I thought I would not like A Song Of Ice And Fire at all, but here I am, a month later, and I am currently on the second to last book.

Has anyone read Cinder? It's a YA book and my bff bought it for me, raving about it, but I haven't touched it yet.

I ended up really enjoying this book. Just finished it last week and I read it while I was at Disney. Good character development, kind of whimisical, and it moved pretty well. I've got the sequel on hold at the library.

I just finished reading 'Iron House' by John Hart and wow - one of the best books I've read in a long time. I highly recommend it. I'm sitting here trying to come up with a quick blurb as to the plot, but there is so much to this book, I'm having a hard time coming up with something. I don't even know how to categorize it - mystery/suspense for sure, but it's so much more than that. The only thing I didn't like was reaching the end and having to say good-bye to the characters that I'd grown to love.

Well, okay, maybe it doesn't 100% suck but I hate it when an author cannot not make a clean, good ending. It's such a copout. That's how I felt about this book.

I couldnt agree more, I was SOOOOOOOOOOOO disappointed in Gone Girl's ending...I feel like she just woke up one morning and just ended the book!

Yes! Give Night Circus a try! I was iffy on it too.

My daughter is reading it now and really likes it too!

I downloaded a sample of Night Circus, after reading Gone Girl I am afraid to pull the trigger and buy it, I dont want to be disappointed in a book Again

I've got 11/22/63 in my to-read stack and I'm going to try to hold off on that one until October. I'm very excited to start it, but I want to wait until fall because it seems like the perfect book to read during the cool, crisp autumn weather. Yes, I know, I'm weird.

I read 11/22/63 a couple of months ago, and it was wonderful! My DH even read it, and he's not much of a reader. I'd never read Stephen King before since I'm not into horror books, but this more of a Twilight Zone type of book.

An excellent book is Outlaw Platoon, by Sean Parnell. This is our work book club book for September - Sean Parnell writes about his time in Afghanistan along the Pakistan border. It is a VERY difficult book to read - so many times I wanted to stop, but I told myself that if he could live thru that to fight terrorism, then the least I could do is read his book.

After reading something like Outlaw Platoon, if you need something light and fluffy, you might want to try one of Jill Mansell's books. They're British chick lit, and they're hilarious! The first one of her books that I read was "Millie's Fling" when it was a Free Fridays selection for my Nook. I've since read more of her books: Staying at Daisy's, An Offer You Can't Refuse, Rumor Has It, and I'm currently reading Perfect Timing. Some of the British slang takes getting used to, but they're fun, fluffy books.

And don't forget about Deborah Harkness's books: A Discovery of Witches and Shadow of Night. I found that both of them took me about 1/4 of the book to really get into it, but by the last 1/3 of the book, I had a hard time putting them down. Only now we have to wait for the third and final book in that series to come out. Does anybody know when it'll be out?

Just finished "Road to Grace" by Richard Paul Evans. It's the third book in "The Walk" series. Also finished "A Perfect Day", another of his books while I was waiting for that one to become available at the library. Both were very good, what I call 'soft' reads, lol. Now starting "Criminal", the latest from Karin Slaughter. Very different from Richard Paul Evans.....

Now I am reading the book I was looking forward to "Daily Life in the Middle Ages" this is actually kind of interesting. I ordered some Sarah Addison Allen books after reading "The Girl who chased the moon". It is a great book and I recommend it.

I'm in the middle of reading the last one and I feel the same. Its like a car accident though, I can't look away.

I just got my copy of Dearie, The Remarkable Life of Julia Child so that is what I'll read next.

Hey, Tina You are not interupting Welcome, please feel free to share whenever you want. This isn't a clique thread BTW, I have the High Heels series on my wishlist. They are by Gemma Halliday, yes? I read 3 of her other books....Hollywood Confessions, Hollywood Scandals and Hollywood Secrets. Awesome books, I really enoyed them

I just finished "If You Can't Stand the Heat" and it was just OK. They didn't give the information for the motive of the killer until the end of the book, so it was like "Well, if I'd known that..." Now I'm reading "Howl Deadly" and so far I really like it.

Me too! I finished it and put it right up there with Kitchen House. I really enjoyed it. It held my interest and there were no boring parts. Thanks for the suggestion I'm torn with my next book....
