Totally agree and hope that you enjoy it. I like Marcus Zusak's style of writing and also liked "I Am the Messanger".

Just finished "Earth Unaware" (new novel in Enderverse series) and almost done with "Shadow of the Giant", also part of series. Think going back to the Malcolm Gladwell books next. I would like to tackle "Game of Thrones" at some point soon.

Tell me more about "Earth Unaware" and "Shadow of the Giant". I think I've read "Shadow" but I'm not sure. Is "Earth Unaware" a new book?

In case anyone is looking for a really in-depth, interesting book to read, I wanted to recommend Pillars of the Earth. I read it years ago and I still remember how enthralled I was.

I second this recommendation! And lest anyone read the synopsis and think 'oh, that's not my kind of book', that's exactly what I thought too. I'd hear glowing reviews, go to the bookstore, read the back cover, then put it back. This happened 3 or 4 times before I finally broke down and bought it. I think at that point I'd reached the bottom of my to-read stack and didn't have anything else that interested me. I wound up loving it so much I read the sequel, as well as other similar novels.

I loved Pillars of the Earth also! I thought the same thing - not my cup of tea but gave it a try and loved it. Also loved his book Fall of Giants. I'm waiting for the second one to come out of that!

Leary to read a Gillian Flynn book, such as Gone Girl. I've heard they're really, really dark but from all the recommendations on here, I'm thinking I should give one of them a shot.

I just finished it last night. I'm not typically a thriller reader, but it had so many good reviews. I did really like it, but I did not love the end! I don't think it is that dark, but you do get in the mind of a crazy person. There is a lot of bad language and adult situations if that bothers you.

I almost take offense to the no vampires comments ( but not really ). All vampire books aren't filled with sparkles, love and sex. I would recommend The Strain. It's a terrific trilogy with an apocalyptic setting that vampires and a resistance. It's great.

As for 50 Shades... You're just reading the dirty version of Edward and Bella. I don't know what everyone sees in it. The writing is horrid with common words.

Can't wait to read Gone Girl.

I agree about Vampires. I am reading the Anita Blake series and I really like it! I'll have to check out the The Strain.

As for 50 Shades being the dirty version of Twilight...I don't see it(Even though I know it IS fan fiction). I disliked 50 Shades, but neither it, nor Twilight are NEW stories. Shy, awkward girl gets the tough, disturbed bad boy? That has been a common writting formula for a while.

Agreed! I couldn't even make it thru the 1st book of 50 Shades. Blah!

I made myself finish it. I kept waiting for it to get better, but it never did. One of the things that kept me going was waiting to learn more about Christian. That never happened. I have heard that you do learn more about him in the second and third books, but I'm not interested.

I'm on an Olympic binge lately. So far, over the past couple of weeks, I've read Frozen in Time, about the entire U.S figure skating team that was killed in a plane crash in 1961. Very sad, but also fascinating. I've also read Inside Edge by Christine Brennan. It's a behind the scene look at figure skating. I just got done with Little Girls in Pretty Boxes, a look at the problems with elite sports like gymnastics and figure skating. Not sure what I'll be reading next.

I just finished Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness. It is the 2nd book, just released, in her "All Souls" trilogy.

I read the first one, "A Discovery of Witches", when it first came out, and while I thought it was OK, it didn't thrill me all that much. I thought it dragged a little and didn't hold my attention.

I just LOVED Shadow though - I think it was the historical aspect, both the time period and the actual historical people, that kept it so fascinating. Now I can't WAIT for book 3.

I think her newest one, which I just finished not too long ago, was number... 21?? I Jean-Claude - all of the men are wonderful , but he is my favorite.

Her "Merry Gentry" series is awesome too, I wish there were more of those.

Ooh, thanks for suggestions for my "to read" list! As if the list wasn't long enough already! Had not heard of "Gone Girl" but will look for it.
Here are my suggestions:
"Night Circus" by Erin Morgenstern. Yeah, I didn't think I would enjoy it either, and almost returned it to the library without reading it, but picked it up one night...and was immediately drawn in. Really recommend it.
"The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian" by Sherm Alexie. It's another Y/A book, but a wonderful read. Very unique writing style, and is funny/sad/thought provoking. Please read it.
There is also a very enjoyable, but different , series by Colin Cotteril. One of the books is titled, "The Curse of the Pogo Stick". They star Dr. Siri Paboun, a Dr. who is named national coroner in communist controlled Thailand, though he has never been a coroner before. They are mysteries, and very well written. Probably doesnt sound good by my description, but they are!
Other books I have enjoyed are Water for Elephants, Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta series, the Alexander McCall Smith No.1 Ladies Detective Agency series, and, and, and...ok, I'll stop here.

I read the Janet Evanovich series really quickly too, and am re-reading them as I can get them from the library - #19 comes out in November and I would like to have the re-read done by then. Ahhh.... Ranger!!
