What Happened to EPCOT?

So the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow used to be my favorite park at the World, I loved the food, the rides were great, Illuminations was awesome, people generally weren't racing around at Magic Kingdom pace to see everything, I just enjoyed this park above the others. Until recently that is, I noticed it last year but more so now that we've come here during the summer. EPCOT has become a bit of a drunkard's paradise with no real control/oversight by CMs or managers.

I'm an adult and I can enjoy a drink or two (or three or four) and have no issues with anyone else doing the same, but there is a line between enjoying a few tasty beverages and getting wasted in a theme park full of kids. My issue comes when people are spilling over themselves or being loud and intolerable during shows or knocking over my child because they can't see where they're going, things like this.

My larger concern is that CM's seem to have no control over the problem or have just accepted it as part of the EPCOT experience.

A few "visual" aids

1) While waiting by the American pavilion for Illuminations, there are three college kids by the funnel cake stand making a bunch of noise and having a good time. I get it, it's summer and school's out and they're having a good time. Until one of the says, "I dare you!" and one of the young ladies proceeds to a full body dive into the bushes behind the railing. her friends were rolling on the floor laughing and she eventually climbs out, covered in scratches and repeatedly saying "holy ****, holy ****, that hurt" while a CM walks by and just shakes her head. This is completely acceptable behavior if I was at my neighborhood bar and we were outside getting some air, but this is not something I expect to see at a Disney Park. These folks were obviously drunk and not behaving in an acceptable manner in a park filled with children (never mind they fact that the girl could've been seriously injured), but security never came by, no senior CMs came by, nothing.

Once Illuminations got started they rolled up and proceeded to scream and yell profanities and my wife (who has a much shorter fuse than I do) turns and tells them to quiet down, there are children around. They laughed and kept yelling and I had to calm her and try to get her to ignore them because we didn't want things getting out of control. Ruined the show for us.

2) Walking through the giant store in the Japan pavilion and we get to the saki bar area. A guy my age who's clearly had too much is there with his family and he starts mocking the folks behind the register in a horrible Japanese accent. He keeps pointing and saying "how much for the happy ending!". His family is trying to get him to stop but he keeps going and says "we're just havin' fun". There are a bunch of CMs around but they go about they're business, no security comes over, nothing. The issue here is that they kept serving the guy even though he was obviously already gone. No controls in place or a lack of training on when to stop serving someone alcohol.

3) Heading towards Mexico and there's a group of about 5 college dudes walking towards us and again they're already drunk and they're pushing and shoving each other and acting like normal college kids do when they're hanging out at a bar. One of them almost bumps into my daughter and I have to push him to keep him from knocking her over. Nothing happened but we exchanged some glances, I can take care of myself but I'd have hated to have my little one have to see that it had anything escalated. Right after that, they jump to that drink stand outside and order another round of margaritas. Again, they're already drunk and belligerently pestering the server but that doesn't stop them from being served. Where is the control? We keep walking and the guys start yelling again and I share a look with the CM manning one of the merchandise stands by Africa (I think) and he says, "sun's going down, time's about right for this" as if it's expected and acceptable behavior at this point.

These are just 3 incidents that occurred, this post would get way too long if I listed every red-eyed or stumbling guest I came across. I understand that margins on alcohol sales are huge, and Disney is a corporation that has to answer to shareholders, but when is enough, enough.

The experience at EPCOT has transformed from a cultural haven where we go to get a glimpse of life on other countries and cultures outside of our own to that of "how many can I have before I hurl or pass out from the heat?". Not everyone is the same, I've seen people complete Drinks Around the World, get a buzz, and enjoy themselves without becoming a nuisance to other guests. But if this is what EPCOT is about these days, if this is what Disney is allowing the city of tomorrow to become (an outdoor bar with no means of crowd control) then....well there's not much we can do is there?

Is it just me who feels this way? Anyone else out there not enjoy this park as much as they used to because of this?

I've had some disappointing experiences with over-served guests at IllumiNations times, too.

It is very disappointing that so many people think that they must be drunk in order to have a good time, and that being drunk is an excuse for bad behavior.

I did F&W last year on a Saturday last year, never again. (I didn't want to, but it was the only day available for my friends that said that they wanted to meet up with us. Which they ended up not meeting us.) There were a lot of drunk and rowdy people.

No, I have never seen over the top drunk behavior at Epcot. We were at Illuminations last Friday night, in the Dessert Party, where they serve unlimited Rum punch, potent at that, along with Prosesco. 2 other nights we were at Epcot at closing, past really due to late ADR and never one time saw folks stumbling around or acting a fool. Maybe I just don't pay good enough attention.

As for DGD being exposed to it if we did happen to see it, she sees worse when some of our friends all get together. One in particular (a teacher none the less) is the most rowdy of all. I figure it's a good example for her to see what NOT to do when drinking.

I don't doubt any of this, I'm just happy I haven't had those experiences in any of my trips to Epcot!

I did see one wasted guy last trip now that I think about it...he was sort of just holding onto the fence and walking

I guess it is impossible to police the over serving when one can move from kiosk to kiosk and drink all day. Unless one is visibly drunk at a kiosk of course.

Maybe Disney is fishing for new beer sponsors for EPCOT.

I've never seen it first hand either. The worst I've seen was a few young ladies and their mother at F&W a couple years ago who were definitely tipsy and in line for Maelstrom in front of me. Their mother stumbled and fell into me. Other than that though, they rode in the same boat with me and were rather entertaining with their reactions to the trolls and such.

I do think that CMs really need to crack down on the really bad behavior. I mean fun is one thing, but when people start acting inappropriate, especially with all the kids around, they can be shown the door for all I'm concerned.

Epcot is my favorite park and I have spent a lot of time there. In all of my trips there, which counting while I was living in FL are well over 100, I remember exactly one incident of a stumbling intoxicated person. It was well after midnight during the after party for the Wine & Dine half marathon and someone who had been there all day was behind me in the line for the bathroom and was wobbling back and forth and slurring his speech.

Beyond that one incident I haven't seen anyone that bad. Sure, I've seen people who were past the legal limit, but nothing like described in the OP and not nearly as often as these boards would have you believe.

I have seen it, but not to the extent that you describe (thank goodness!). I was at an EP EMH one night a few years ago during F&W, standing in line for the Gran Fiesta Tour. There were 3 very drunk young men in front of me who were really carrying on. The CM who was helping load the ride kicked all of them out saying no one was going to throw up on her ride! Everyone else in the line applauded as none of us wanted to ride with them.

We also went to Monsieur Paul one night for dinner with our DS (then 6) and it was the evening of the Wine and Dine half marathon. When we left dinner, the France pavilion looked like it had turned into a frat party. There were plastic champagne flutes everywhere and people just drinking and drinking. No one was out of hand, but it definitely wasn't an appropriate atmosphere for a 6 year old, so we promptly left and went to the Boardwalk. I mentioned in in passing to some CM's in the AKL gift shop (where we were staying) and they were shocked and apologized for our experience (which they certainly didn't need to as it wasn't there fault!), but they too commented that in their years working there and frequently visiting the parks, they had seen much more drunken behavior than in years past.

Wow, I'm surprised not more people have noticed. I don't go around looking for these things, I'm more of a "keep my head up and soak in the Disney magic" kinda guy but this just kept happening to us. Thanks for the heads up on F&W Saturdays, will let the wife know :)

I'm not trying to hijack the thread, but did you have fun at the Illuminations Dessert Party? I'm on the fence and keep seeing conflicting opinions. Thanks!

Actually getting guests tipsy at EPCOT is genius marketing on the part of Disney. They make money on alcohol sales and with so many attractions shuttered if you get guests loaded all of a sudden the park seems a little better. Plus you have the added benefit of people sleeping off a hangover the next day in over priced rooms and more room in the parks for extra guests. Brilliant I tell you, brilliant!

YES! 2nd best extra we've ever done at Disney (Harambe Nights was the best but it was 1 time and doesn't really count)
Food was awesome.
Viewing spot was awesome. Yes you still stand but there are a few walls you can lean on.
And there's alcohol! The rum punch was yummy!
Seriously, it is so much better than the Wishes version it's not even funny.
The desserts from the various countries were all so very good. We purposely ate a small meal that night so we had plenty of room.
We stuck around a bit after it was over so we could check in for our flights leaving the next day. I got to speak to one of the organizing CMs that was supervising the break down. I told her how much better it was than Wishes party and even the Frozen and SWW parties. I hope they can offer it more frequently.

We go to EPCOT almost every night while at the World and unfortunately I have witnessed the same thing the OP has noted especially during F & W and even more so on the weekends. If possible, I'll never go to EPCOT at night during F&W again. My wife and I will have a couple drinks and we don't mind people having a good time but over the last few years we've seen way too many drunk people (young & older) at the Park. I agree Disney needs to get this back under control.

Thank you! The chair thing does strike me as odd. I have a 6 year old that will probably end up sitting on the ground after a half hour or so. Are there assigned seats like at Wishes? Is there a mad scramble for the most optimal viewing spots right before Illuminations begin? Thanks again!

I was used to the standing tables from the HS events so they weren't too odd for us. CM I spoke with said the same dept does both the Epcot and the HS events, for what it's worth
Reserved seats is one place where they do differ from Wishes, no assigned tables. They open the area about an hour before Illuminations begins. We got to the area about 10 min before that, roughly. There was a line already formed of people waiting to go in. I'm guessing they started to check in about 30 min before. We still got a good spot along the rail, so we could sort of lean/sit on it. And it was a very good view of Illuminations.
