What food is your state/home known for? How do you make it?

I started thinking about it more, and quite a bit of what is common in an area is often not necessarily regional but international to some degree. I think of an English coworker who told me that possibly the most popular food in England was chicken tikka masala, which many claim originated in the UK.

It may not be something that people eat every day, but I'd imagine that a lot of visitors would have dim sum.

WNY'er here... a couple weeks ago I had a garbage plate with tots, fingers, bacon, cheese, Frank's, and ranch. First and last time I'll have a garbage plate. Was great for about 2/3 of it and then it was just too much of the same flavors and made me sick later.

I eat half one day and half cold the next day. There are many versions of a "garbage plate" now but I love the original concept and you can not bet a good meat hot sauce. If you are in Rochester we love Dog Town on Monroe Ave.- their plates a bit smaller and so good. My favorite place for meat hot sauce is Schaller's. We also make our own and freeze it. My oldest lives in Philadelphia and he will bring it back with him. His housemates love it and there is nothing like it down there.

Here in Rochester, NY we are also known for Chicken French. It is chicken dipped in egg and flour. You sauté it in olive oil and then you make the lemon sauce. The lemon sauce is made using lemon juice, garlic and white wine. It is a specialty around here and many restaurants serve it. It is usually served with pasta. Some places the sauce is more lemony rather than wine tasting. I have tried to make it at home but it is so much better out.

My DH is from Philly, we love pork roll but its expensive in the south ( texas) so we do not get it much... the only places I can find it is whole foods and Central market. :(.. I dont think anywhere sells scrapple.
I’m shocked that a Whole Foods would sell pork roll! Lol! It has to be Taylor though to be “real” pork roll.

I especially enjoy pizza the way they make it in NY/NJ. When we lived in Ohio, just had to wait to get to NJ to get real pizza. Dorothy Lane Market (DLM) there did sell Pork Roll, so we were able to enjoy it there.

Philly pretzels are great, but we really enjoy WAWA’s the best. I grew up in north Jersey and the pretzels there are different, I never had mustard with them until we moved to PA.

Real Jewish Rye Bread! OMG, can’t get that anywhere but north Jersey NYC. I must say that (DLM) came close!

What happened to Tastykakes?? They’re not the same any more!

Jucy Lucy, Two very thin beef patties with american cheese between them. Fried on a flat top until the burgers are done and the cheese inside is molten lava. http://mattsbar.com/ is the home of the original. It is where I took my wife on our first date and the only restaurant in Minneapolis I still go to everytime I go back.

I am partial to the 5*8 ones :)

WISCONSIN

Brats and BEER
Brats must be grilled
Beer must be cold! and preferably from WI like NewGlaurus or any Leinenkugel

I miss Spotted Cow. We spent Friday in Wisconsin at our property there - stopped by the creamery for some fresh fried curds...YUM!

Minnesota also: walleye, hotdishes, wild rice

I find wawa pretzels to be hard. We only go to Philly Pretzel Company. I eat mine with yellow mustard. Not the brown mustard.

I haven’t had a tasty cake in forever but my daughter was craving them last week. My son ran to Wawa and got her an individual pack. She loved it. My aunt lives in Arizona and my grandma still sends her lemon pies. I don’t feel they are the same anymore.

Is there any other kind?.. whole foods carries boars head products and that's who distributes taylor. Its those little rolls you have to cut yourself so they are little circles.

this is the legit pork roll/Taylor ham. I’m in south Jersey. We call it pork roll. North Jersey calls it Taylor ham. Some of the grocery chains here have store brand pork roll.

My MIL asked me to look for the TC lemon pies with out frosting.. I could not find them anywhere.
Wawa pretzels are good if you get them in the morning. When we go to Disney my DH loves to go to wawa

A whole different world from North Jersey to South Jersey/Philly. DH & I grew up in Bergen county, oh so close to NY (state & city), coming to South Jersey was quite an adjustment. Forgot about the real Jewish rye bread. Pizza was another one to get used to down here. NY bagels & bialys??? OMG, pure heaven. Italian restaurants are the best in North Jersey.

I grew up in Newark, and the Italian bakery on South Orange Avenue had the BEST Italian Lemon Ice!! Real lemon rinds, smooth. Loved going to Boyan Street Pool, getting a soft pretzel as we left the pool, then stopping by the bakery for a lemon ice in a paper cup!

Moved to Bayonne NJ as a teen. Rides down Broadway and stopping for a slice of Pizza at any of the places...excellent too!

Had my first mussels in marinara at one of the bars on Broadway. Gosh.

I guess I had an idyllic childhood. :goodvibes

You could make the Rochester specialty - a garbage plate. It is 2 hamburgers or cheeseburgers or 2 zweigle hots (red or white) with macaroni salad, fried potatoes or baked beans with meat hot sauce on top. We do not like onions so no onions for us. View attachment 554842

Looks terrible but tastes awesome.

My son's been there for a year and a half now (he goes to RIT) and I don't think he's had one garbage plate yet. :p :rotfl2:

Who knew that the next thing we want to try is called a garbage plate..lol

Ohio
Buckeye candy- creamy peanut butter, butter, powdered sugar rolled in to balls and dipped in to coating chocolate or chocolate with a little wax
Skyline chili 3 way- spaghetti with Skyline chili (no beans) and thin shredded cheese on top
Ohio Nachos (made with potato chips)
Johnny Marzetti
Ice cream (Graeter’s, Jeni’s, etc)
Bahama Mama (Schmidt’s)
Perch

Aside from the perch, I'd say it's more of a central/southern Ohio list.

Tried to think of a northern Ohio food and the only one that specifically came to mind was a Polish Boy.
