What exactly DID you do at Disney? May 2011 TR (TR link pg 44)

I'm so glad you had a good day at IOA!!! I too liked the HP stuff, but thought it was too crowded, we went in January for my birthday this year. I got a bunch more remarks for the wheelchair there too, maybe because I was wearing pants and they couldn't see the leg braces??? I dunno. I got one of the pink Pigmy Puffs, he sits on my night stand and my cat has adopted him. Really cute!!! I like Universal, but it's one of those one time a year parks, like Sea World. We had US annual passes one year, but with having to pay for parking, that HUGE walk to the parks, the food that's just disgusting, and rude CM's, we let them passes go. I'll pay more for Disney where they GIVE you more for the $$. I can't wait to see how you like AKL either, I can't believe they didn't text you until you called them!! I woulda been really upset!!

Thanks for the comment on my pictures, you're sweet!! You need to get facebook so you can see ALL the pictures, I got an album there with the pictures I take on our quick getaways there, there's never enough space in the trip reports on here to post them here!! the past couple pics my face is the same...I'm TRYING to smile, but with no muscles in my face....makes it kinda hard. At least I won't have smile wrinkles to worry about!!!! :) I did enjoy reading about your day tho, it was nice to sense that you all were in good spirits for a day, after you found the doritos of course!!

DH headed to Bubba Gumps gift shop to purchase a shirt and hat for his dad. I thought it was a strange gift to pick while you are at Universal/ Disney/ Discovery Cove, but he thought it was perfect. I guess his dad had a hat from there when he was a kid. He also picked up a sister for his shirt. His sister told Caitlin to get her something good so I am sure she was thrilled with DH’s pick.

Now that's an interesting concept

Glad the day went better at Universal/IOA. Too bad the Jurassic Park ride was closed. That would be the first thing I'd want to do if I ever went there. I hear a lot of people don't like the Butter beer. Now I really want to try it for myself. I hope after a year or two WWOHP will die down and not be so crowded all the time. Seems kind of steep to pay for the express pass when Disney has it included for free :confused3

I wouldn't mind doing US/IOA every other trip but DH likes it so we go each time. I really enjoy the time we spend there but would be happier if everyone acted the same on the Disney days.

I was a bit annoyed that our room was ready and they never texted us. It didn't matter too much since we were in the park anyway, but I was worried that morning that we might want to leave early and have nowhere to go.

Caitlin was in a much better mood after we found her Doritos. I know I am a horrible mother for letting her get her way and eat them at 1030am but I knew she would be grumpy until she got them. I am the same way when I want something, so I caved.

Now that's an interesting concept

 Guess spell check can't catch everything!

I can't wait for HP to calm down a bit. Although it most likely won't until they add something new.

The express pass were awesome. It was pretty busy the day we went. I forgot to mention that there were tons of school groups there since I think it was the last week of school for kids in FL.

The $78? was for the 3 of us. The prices vary depending on the time of year and which option you get but we loved them. You can pre-purchase them online but I would wait and check out the wait times for the day you go. There are probably many times of the year when you wouldn't need them. We didn't have many waits last year and we were there in May. I think the school groups really added to crowds. They were pretty cool. It must be so nice to stay at one of the Universal resorts and get front of the line access included. I am really considering trying that out next trip for a few days.

Thanks for the tips! It makes sense to wait and purchase them just in case the lines aren't long. The price seems worth it if the lines are long but I probably wouldn't have been happy spending the money if the lines were all short.

DD7 really wants to read Harry Potter, so I have a copy that I am going to read first. Maybe after she reads that she will want to do WWoHP. I sure can see the crowds building in your pictures.

I have seen several reviews of the butter beer. Lots of people seem to really like it, but I just can't even imagine liking it. I'm glad you got to try it though.

Caitlin's determination to get Doritos made me laugh. With a junk food bonanza laid out before me, those would be at the bottom of my list.

The Dr. Suess area looks really awesome. We have never been to IOA, but I think we would really enjoy that part. I would love to take lots of pictures of the carousel.

IoA looks pretty cool - I don't know very much about US. i read someone else's review of WWOHP - thought it looked cool but very crowded. Interesting concept with the express pass. I'm guessing a lot of people don't buy them or the "instant" part of it would not be so instant, right?

I hear you on the whole Doritos search - for some reason at the parks I will be a little lax in our usual habits and will let Katie have junkie snack early in the day too -- just avoiding the fight and grumpiness makes it worth it!:lmao:

I was laughing outloud at all your ride names- fake splash, fake kali:lmao:

that's a lot of money to pay to get to the front of the line. Do you get express passes or early entry for staying at certain hotels?

I'm excited to see your room!

Interesting update. I've never even considered going to Universal and probably won't for a long time. I can't seem to tolerate roller coasters anywhere but Disneyworld! :confused3 Go figure, right?

Hello! You must be so excited that school is almost over and your trip is so soon. On one hand I am happy Caitlin is almost out for the summer and then, on the other hand I remember I am going to have to entertain her all summer. Any plans or interesting plans you go in CT with Max during the summer? I need some ideas of things to do.

I go to a few beaches east of New Haven; Hammonasett, in particular. We also like Lake Compounce, which isn't as big as Six Flags in Massachusetts, but is a lot cleaner and friendlier and more kid-friendly, too. They have a small water park, too. The Mystic Aquarium and that whole area are pretty nice, although entrance to the aquarium is pricey.

The beaches in Rhode Island are nice, too, and not that far. Watch Hill and Miscquamicit are nice.

Up until this year, we've gone to Cape Cod every summer, too. Not a day trip, but its fun.

Not sure what part of the state you're in, but I recently stumbled on a neat website www.kidhaven.com, which lists things to do with kids in the greater New Haven area.

If anything else occurs to me, I'll let you know.

The Harry Potter stuff looks so cool. Too bad Caitlin wasn't big enough for more of the rides there. I've often thought that it would be more fun if everyone was tall enough to ride together.

It is funny how many Universal rides seem to be a version of a Disney ride. I do wonder how it is that Universal has a Marvel section, while Disney has bought out Marvel. I wonder how that's going to work out.

From all the other reports I've read on here about IOA and Un. it just seems WAY too busy for me to probably enjoy it. Too bad you had to deal with grumpy tudes and pickiness. But, sounds like the FPs helped with some of that a bit. Interesting to know they can be used more than once. Hmmm...

Okay, I'm confused with the US/IoA FP system. I thought it was like a coupon book they gave you and you had to forfeit the coupon to ride - each person must have their own book, etc.

How does it work? I'm hoping for US/IoA visit next year, so trying to learn what I can about the system ... TIA! :goodvibes

I have a little work dilemma on my hands. It is a bit OT, but I think it is very Disney related b/c it involves 2 very important things needed for Disney. $$$ and vacation time.

As most of you know right now I work in a hospital as an x-ray tech. I am per diem which means that I have no guaranteed hours; no types of benefits-medical, sick pay, vacation time, nothing. Since I have no guaranteed hours I make a good chunk more than if I was an actual part timer or full timer.
I have always thought I wanted part time and try to average at least 10-12 shifts a month. The way I get hours is I fill in on days that people have requested off-vacation time, personal days, etc. or just days where they need extra coverage. The full timers/ part timers also are also allowed to give away their weekends they don’t want to work so there is a huge board have weekend hours posted.

A few weeks ago they announced our hospital was going a new CT scanner and needed more CT techs. The positions went to 2 of the part time x-ray techs, so now there is an opening for 2 part positions in xray.
One position I am not interested in b/c it will be mostly 4-12 and I despise that shift.

The second will be 3 days a week, but every 3rd weekend you have to work the overnight shift, midnight to eight (which is fine since I usually prefer that shift on the weekend out of all 3 shifts)

Here is my dilemma. I am not sure if I am better off going part time or staying where I am. If I become part time I lose the extra pay that is associated with being per diem. It is what I consider a big drop. If I were to work 24 hours at my current rate I would make an extra $7000 more than if I work 24 hours as a part time tech. That is a very nice Disney trip right there.

Here are the pros and cons I have thought of

Per diem

Pros
-more money

-flexibility- I get to chose when I want to work, if I don’t want to work when Caitlin is on vacation or has days off I just don’t pick up hours that day. I don’t have to worry about filling out a time off sheet and getting it approved for vacation time. You can usually go when you want but if there are more than a few people requesting the same time it would go by seniority, which I would not have

- As most of you know we are currently trying to get pregnant- don’t have to worry about maternity leave and coming back at a certain time- I could take 5 months of and come back to work 2 days a month if I felt like it. I have no requirement to work at all.

Cons
- No guaranteed hours- over the summer I have tons of hours b/c many people take vacations. Once Sep. comes people stop taking vacation the hours I have to pick from drop. Mostly weekend or 4-12 which I don’t like. There are also 4 per diem techs that just got hired and our training for this month. Once July comes there will be 4 more people looking to pick up hours.

- rotating shifts, not having a set schedule. Right now my mom takes Caitlin to the bus stop when I work days, but if I had the part time position I could put her in the before school program and not have to depend on my mom to bring her.

Part time

Pros

- Benefits- Here is the thing- DH has amazing benefits through his job. I am not worried about this. Whenever people ask me if I am applying for the part time position they are quick to point out I will have benefits! How exciting!. Yep, don’t really care.

- Day shifts!!! Whoo-hoo. No more 4-12 shifts. Did I say whoo-hoo? I just hate 4-12.

- Guaranteed 24 hours a week, no more worrying about fighting people for hours- especially with all the new hires coming in

- Can put Caitin in before school program and if we have another child it will be much easier to find childcare

- Sick time, vacation time, personal time- We start with 4 weeks paid vacation time, not sure about the personal time or sick time
-More of a fitting in feeling, right now since I do rotating shifts I rarely work with the same people in the same area. It’s tough to work with people in such a close setting when you barely know them and don’t know how they work

Cons
- More responsibility- being per diem you don’t really belong anywhere. You float in and not much is expected out of you. As techs we go in the operating room and I hate the operating room. As a per diem I don’t really go in too much except on easier cases. If I go part time I am taking the position of a guy who was always in the OR. It going to be expected that as a part timer I will learn the very difficult cases and I just want nothing to do with it. I am sure I could learn and eventually get it, but I wish I could stay far away from the OR.

- No more flexibility. I know that each week I am working 3 days. Sometimes as per diem I will pick up a bunch of days in one month and then to average out to my 10 that I like to have barely work the next month. There have been many months that I will cram all my days together in 2 weeks and then take the next two weeks off. It’s nice having some time to myself for awhile.

- Maternity leaves sucks. They give you 6 weeks off for regular birth, 8 weeks for s-section, and you can extend to 12 if nursing for “bonding time” I have heard the people who handle everything are awful. Like I would have 8 weeks, but when I try to extent to 12 they don’t ever get the paperwork back to you letting you know until you are already past 12 weeks and back at work.

- Every 3rd weekend doing the overnight. I don’t really mind them over the summer, but they will be tough in the winter. Plus if we have another child it will be very tough to work that shift. However as a part timer I can post my weekends for the other per diems to take as long as I have the vacation time available.

- When you take vacations you are not given your weekend off. You have to post it, if someone doesn’t pick it up and you have a vacation planned you are screwed. There is a part time tech who has vacation the week of July 4th. She has the whole week off but has to work that weekend which is July 2 and 3. No one has taken her shift so she now has to cut her vacation short to work it. (I am already working that night at midnight so I couldn’t do it)

So that’s it. If you actually read all that, thank you. I would love to know what you think. I asked DH and he actually shocked me and said stay per diem. $7000 is a lot of money to give away. He thinks if I have to work 3 days a week I will be miserable. (However when I asked him my boss had not decided what hours the shifts would be and they could have been rotating days/evenings) Once I found out it was days, he still thinks I am better off getting the extra money, but now I am not so sure.

My main concerns are the money difference, maternity leave, will I have hours the next year?

Also, it is rare in my dept. to have any movement. About 85% of the techs are in their 50’s and until they retire no one is getting another part/full time job.

Thoughts? (I am not sure of my chances of even getting the position; it will depend on who applies. It will go by senoriy and there are a few girls ahead of me who will get it if they apply. Unfortunately they are not talking and no one knows if they will apply since they work full time nights. I just want to be ready in case I do end up getting it.) I am thinking of leaving it up to chance. If I do get it, it was meant to be, if not I might be better off.

If you post for it, do you have to take the position? It never hurts to post for a position. If you don't and then you change your mind, you may regret never going for it. It's a tough choice. I have been PRN and didn't like it. I prefer set hours.

If I was offered the position, I could always turn it down. Although I am sure my boss would not be happy about it. I did apply for it, but who knows what will happen. I just wish I knew who else applied. I know for sure if one girl applied she will get it, but no one will say if she applied or not. Right now she is full time evenings and has been looking for days, but will she drop down to part time? We'll see.

The Dr. Suess area looks really awesome. We have never been to IOA, but I think we would really enjoy that part. I would love to take lots of pictures of the carousel.

Caitlin will do ANYTHING for doritos. It is all my fault though, when I was pregnant with her I ate them by the ton full. I would go through Costco size bags easily downed by some nice cold milk. Caitlin loves milk and she can hear a bag of doritos being opened down the street.

The Suess area is so cute. I wanted to take a bunch of pictures, but you know how well that goes for me.

I am glad I got to try butterbeer too. I will probably try the regular one next time though. The frozen one wasn't bad, might of been better later that week once the heat and humidity spiked up.

I can't wait until Caitlin is a bit older so we can read HP. She doesn't have much interest in it now.

IoA looks pretty cool - I don't know very much about US. i read someone else's review of WWOHP - thought it looked cool but very crowded. Interesting concept with the express pass. I'm guessing a lot of people don't buy them or the "instant" part of it would not be so instant, right?

I don't think many people buy the express passes either. Usually the lines aren't too bad, I guess we just picked a bad day (or week since all the school groups were there that week) I doubt there are many times when you will need them, but they were nice that day.

Only on vacation can you have doritos at 10am.

I was laughing outloud at all your ride names- fake splash, fake kali:lmao:

that's a lot of money to pay to get to the front of the line. Do you get express passes or early entry for staying at certain hotels?

I'm excited to see your room!

If you stay at the 3 onsite Universal hotels you get early entry to WWOHP and express passes. Something for us to consider next time for at least a day or two.

Interesting update. I've never even considered going to Universal and probably won't for a long time. I can't seem to tolerate roller coasters anywhere but Disneyworld! :confused3 Go figure, right?

Thanks for the info. I happen to live in New Haven County so the link is appreciated. I always forget about Lake Compounce. We always spent a great deal of time there and Lake Quassy when I was growing up. I checked it out and Caitlin can ride most of the water rides. I must have been avoiding it in the past few years b/c she was too small.

We made a few day trips to Miscquamicit last year. We never seem to have good luck at the beach. We live about a mile from the beach so we tend to go there. The last two times DH has stepped on horseshoe crabs and the last time Caitlin got a little sting by a jellyfish. As much as Caitlin loves to swim she is terrified of anything other than a pool.

Here are some pictures of her trying to go in the water.

We are close to New Haven but we have never been to Hammonasett. We'll have to check that out.

Have you been to the Children's Museum in New Haven? Caitlin missed her class trip there b/c we were at Disney. Worth a visit?

The Harry Potter stuff looks so cool. Too bad Caitlin wasn't big enough for more of the rides there. I've often thought that it would be more fun if everyone was tall enough to ride together.

It is funny how many Universal rides seem to be a version of a Disney ride. I do wonder how it is that Universal has a Marvel section, while Disney has bought out Marvel. I wonder how that's going to work out.

I can't wait until Caitlin is taller. IOA will be awesome once she can ride the coasters. She still has a good time, but I miss going on the thrill rides. I guess I just don't like going alone enough to do the single rider line.

It will be interesting to see how the whole Marvel situation turns out. I have heard it won't be going anywhere anytime soon.

DH is a huge Marvel fan so ever since he was old enough he has been putting money into Marvel stock. Of course now that stock is Disney stock. That's right, my anti -Disney DH is a Disney stock holder. He wasn't happy about it but he has decided to let it be Caitlin's and will give her whatever is in there when she gets older. He says he enjoys making money off people like me. I usually tell him that if we take another Disney trip or cruise we are just investing in Caitlin's future.

From all the other reports I've read on here about IOA and Un. it just seems WAY too busy for me to probably enjoy it. Too bad you had to deal with grumpy tudes and pickiness. But, sounds like the FPs helped with some of that a bit. Interesting to know they can be used more than once. Hmmm...

I think the only use once passes must be new. I have never seen them mentioned before. They might fix that soon so don't count on it.

I always find it interesting to know that DH, who is incredibly cheap, will pay for extras so that he doesn't have to wait. He also insists that if I want to see Wishes next time I need to book something like the dessert party or Pirates and Pals that we did last year. He just hates waiting. You do not want to be stuck in a car with him on the highway when there is traffic. We drove from North Carolina to CT the night before Thanksgiving while he was in the Marines. The 12 hour drive took 17 hrs b/c we hit traffic near DC. Not fun. :scared1:

How does it work? I'm hoping for US/IoA visit next year, so trying to learn what I can about the system ... TIA! :goodvibes

The express passes look a bit like paper Disney tickets. There is a barcode on the back that they scan when you enter the line. The ride only once option that is cheaper might be new, b/c I never saw it mentioned anywhere before. When DH went back on the ride twice the guy scanned the ticket and did a bit of a double take and tried again. Maybe DH just got lucky, but the guy sent him through.

You can purchase them online or at certain stores at the parks. It is better to wait b/c depending on time of year you might not need them. Before this trip we never really had any waits longer than 30 minutes.

Well, Diane, as you know I have been in your same boat before and I took the part time job. This was my reasoning:

Once October hits, (here, people still take mass vacation in Sept here as it's one of the nicer months), hours become drier than a bone and I always find myself panicking that I'm not going to get any hours and be able to cover basics like my car payment, let alone Disney trips.

I had initially taken a full time, 4-10's, but it didn't work out. I took a big pay cut from being per-diem to working days. Like, $4 an hour, and it hurt me a lot worse than I thought it would. My other Ortho office that I worked for created a two day a week permanent position for me, Wednesday and Friday, which is perfect for me, and then I fill in for other people's days off still as needed so I get extra money. It's really, really nice to know I'm not going to have to panic when the fall rolls around, it's great peace of mind.

What I would do, because I am in the same benefit situation as you as well, I don't need them, is ask if you can take the part time, non-benefited, at your per-diem rate. That's what I did, and they gave it to me. So, I'm making $25/hr instead of $21/hr that I would get if I took the medical/dental. It's worth a shot, the worst they can say is no, and they shouldn't, because they aren't paying anything extra for you to work there. If they say no, don't take it. It's not worth the pay cut to have the extra responsibility.

ETA: I just re-read this and realized that I'm probably no help at all as I just totally contradicted myself, LMAO.

I am LOVING this tr!

Not to get off topic...I always thought being an x-ray tech. looked interesting. What exactly do you need to schooling wise to become one? Is it a hard profession to break into?

I was hoping you would have some input, since I knew had just gone through this.

Great idea about asking if I can skip the medical. How does that that work as far as vacation time and stuff for you? Do you still paid vacation time?

What I would do, because I am in the same benefit situation as you as well, I don't need them, is ask if you can take the part time, non-benefited, at your per-diem rate. Yep, I would be losing $6 an hour if I drop to part time. :scared1: If I went part time and worked 12 days a month I could be per diem and work 8 to get the same amount. I worry about not having hours once fall comes with all the new people but there are always midnight shifts on the weekend and with night/weekend differential I could work like 6 of those and make what I would working 3 days a week for 4 weeks. I kind of like those weekend midnights b/c there is no management or State personnel working around asking you stupid questions or checking to see if you have water in the room:banana:

I too would have a hard time moving to part time and losing the flexibility as well as a possible extra $7000, so I can understand your frustration. Since the benefits that would come with the new job don't really matter to you, then that would mean the cons of the new job would outway the pros of the new job. That would make me hesitant to take it. Especially if you are trying to get pregnant--you definitely want a flexible schedule after having a baby! And if you did get the new job, not only would you essentially be "making less" (b/c you would be losing the possible $7000) but then you would have to pay for a before school program on top of that...then for daycare for another child later. It is super expensive to have 2 children in child care at one time--I STILL don't know how we did it the year that we had to do it. It was rough.

Just my 2 cents. Not sure I helped at all, but really all that matters is that you do what's best for you and your family!! Good luck on what you decide and keep us posted.

Now on to trip related comments:

I'm glad to hear you guys had such a good day. I am so jealous you got to go to HP world. I really really really want to go see this but 2 things are stopping me: The crowds. and like Caitlin, my kids wouldn't be tall enough to ride many of the rides so it wouldn't be any fun for them. Besides, I know that HP world will be around for long time, so I have plenty of years ahead to visit it!

Isn't it funny how they managed to make it all day there, but not back at one of the Disney parks?? That must have been frustrating for you! :headache:

And my DH would do exactly the same as yours--he would not even hesitate to pay the $$ to jump ahead in line. I think I may have to agree on this one too, since they let you right on the ride. And you are on vacation after all, so what you might consider spending $80 on while on vacation is very different then what you would consider spending it on in everyday life.

Hi! Wow...you've got a lot on your mind right now! I've never been to the children's museum in New Haven, as I've never heard much about it that was that great. There is one in Middletown, Kid City, that is fun, but Caitlyn might already be too old for it. Max is the primo age for it and he's four. I have heard good things about the Science Museum in Hartford, too. Supposed to be really cool.

As for work...I have to tell you...if I could (or more the point my husband) be ina position to work per diem, or even part time, that woudl be so fantastic. It sounds like staying per diem will probably be best for you and for your family for a while. But I know nothing of how the healthcare field works, so what do I know? As long as you don't need to the benefits, sounds like making more money is the better deal.

On the other hand, you can always apply and see what happens... :confused3 Good luck making the decision.
