What does your kindergartner wear?

My DD is starting Kindergarten this year. When I was 5 brands and styles didn't seem to matter, but apparantly times have changed. Last year in preschool, I was shocked by the number of girls who were VERY into clothes and who ignored the girls not dressed as like them. My daughter wore jeans/khakis and t-shirts and that I guess isn't fashionable. :sad2:

So this year I'd like her to fit in, but not break the bank. So where do shop? What brands are in with 5 year olds? I realize this seems ridiculous, and that at 5 it shouldn't matter what brand you wear, and to my DD it doesn't... she's really nervous about school as it is, I don't want her having to dealing with being ignored for the wrong clothes again.

Thanks for your help.

This is going to vary a lot by region, so if you don't know any other moms in the same class/school you can 'chat up' I don't think I would spend a lot until after school starts and you/your daughter can figure out what is 'in.'

Sad that branding/marketing is getting to our kids that young.

As the mother of 2 DDs now 6 and 8 I have been in your shoes. I am sure that "cool" clothes vary by region, but in K, 1st and 2nd grades, my girls were very into fun clothes that were comfortable too. I tend to favor higher quality clothes because I can usually hand them down from older DD to younger DD. In my opinion sales have been great this year, so I don't feel that I am paying too much and I can still get nice things. In K my DDs wore mostly Hanna Andersson, Gap, Children's Place (buy these on deep discount and don't care if they get ruined at school), mini Boden, and Naartjie. Naartjie is one of our favorites because there are not stores around here, so the outfits are unique. Check out www.naartjie.com which currently is running a 15% off coupon with the code scarlet. Boden is doing 11% off through Upromise I know, and the Children's Place always has coupons floating around. Good luck with Kindergarten.

Great affordable place to shop is crazy8.com I love that place :) if you ebay you can also buy a 20% off coupon on there for a few dollars which more than makes up for what you'll save. :)

Yup, only a little Gap, we don't have one in my local mall. All the other brands are spot on.

I think at this age they are really into the whole look. Funky socks, sometimes cute hairbows, cute skorts and such. We only do jeans if I don't want to pull an outfit together that morning. :lmao:

What is she into? What does she do in her spare time? I know the themed shirts are super cool at this age. My 5 year old wore her "I love cheer" shirt with the cheerleader on it to cheerleading practice and several girls said they wanted one. I got it Justice. They also have soccer and gymnastics and dance themed clothes, too! If she isn't doing the extracurriculars yet, I have seen cute animal and "save the world" type clothes at Justice, as well. And Gymboree can have some funky looks for the 5 year old set. Good luck!

Wow - this thread makes me so glad that my DD has to wear a uniform for kindergarten, although I'm having a lot of trouble finding khaki pants that fit her...

We don't do the label thing here very much.

Most of DS's clothes came from Kmart, Target, Sears and Penney's.

We have the cheer, dance and gymnastics ones too. My 4 y/o dd loves them as do her friends. :thumbsup2

Add us to the Gap, Old Navy, Osh-Kosh, Children's Place and Justice shoppers. I do fill in with the basics though at Target.

My DD is going into 3rd grade this year, but i remember that even in Kindergarten some girls dressed up A LOT!

My DD loves clothes, but doesn't care what others are wearing necessarily. Our school doesn't seem to be hung up on brands, but they typically all wear the same style.

We get all her clothes (and DS's) at Target or Kohl's. They grow out of them so quickly or in DS's case, get a rip in the knee that I can't spend big money on their clothes.

We are lucky in that we get a lot of hand me downs from a friend, and those items are typically Lands End, Children's Place, Gap. And believe me, we love them!

As PP said, try to chat up other moms and see what their girls are wearing. Good Luck!

Wow, I'm glad I live where we do (a suburb of NYC) Kids in my DD's school show up in all sorts of stuff. from really fashionable stuff to just a simple sweatshirt and sweatpants, from stores like Justice and Gap to Walmart and Target, and so far, from pre-K through 1st grade, I haven't heard of any clothing issues in my DD's classes.

Thanks so much for this website! My DD5 needs a 6plus in jeans/pants which is really hard to find. This site has it and her measurements actually match what the site lists. And they're on sale for $11.99 a pair. I'm going to order and cross my fingers that they fit!

totally agree!
Have you tried getting a pair with that adjustable waist in them? :confused3
Both of my kids have to wear uniforms :thumbsup2

My dd just started 1st grade this week and we buy clothes at Justice, Old Navy, GAP, Naartjie and Gymboree. My dd isn't so much into the brand as she is into the "look". She likes the stuff with sparkles, rhinestones, funky socks, accessories. Our problem is that my dd is big for her age (she's wearing a size 8/9) and a lot of the clothes look so "grown up" for a 6 year old.

Gymboree has an AMAZING sale that ends 8-16 everything is 10,15,20 bucks plus there are 20% of coupons out there. They also have plus and slim pants

Wow!

We live in a nice part of town and we still can get away with thrift stores and second hand clothing. Much of it is name brand and hardly used, but some of it is not name brand.

The adjustable waist doesn't help me. Her waist is thick, so she needs a plus size, which is impossible to find in a size 6. The size 7plus (more readily available) is too big. I did find some stretchy-waist khaki pants at JCPenney. I bought a regular size 8 and will have to hem them for length. Regular size 8 uniform pants just do not fit her at all - hips are way too big - or I would buy them and hem them as well. I'm so glad we can do pants instead of skirts - they do not fit her at all!

My dd5 is starting Kindergarten this year. We went to the outlet mall last week and got most of what she needed to start school - she will have to have warmer clothes once the weather gets cooler but she goes to a non-a/c school so she will be starting out in shorts. Most of her clothes came from Children's Place, Osh Kosh, Justice and Kohl's.

I do get a lot of my kids clothes from Once Upon A Child (consignment shop) as they are both very hard on clothes and I can get barely used for reasonable prices. My ds8 has a tendancy to chew on his sleaves and collar and dd5 has a lot of nosebleeds and ruins things like you wouldn't believe.

Wow, thanks for the quick repsonses! I don't know any of the moms in her class, and unfortunatly my friends have boys or much younger girls... so no help there.

My DD is very girly and into dance. She's into her dance classes and had a lot more friends there, but most of the girls in her dance classes didn't seem to worry too much about clothes. So far I've bought her a few things from Justice and I'll probably wait to buy more from there until I can use my Jbucks in September. I also bought 2 cute outfits from Parisian that were on sale. And she's got about 5 pair of different color leggings (she wears them under dresses & skirts in the winter). I'm just really nervous for her this year, but I guess I'll have to see how it goes. I know the girls who caused the most problems won't be in her school this year so maybe it will be better.

Thanks for all the help!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! :cheer2: I had never heard of this place before. My 3 1/2 year old DD has always been big for her age. She is 41 pounds. She is wearing a 4T, but about the only brand she has ever been able to wear is Gymboree as almost everything else is cut too small for her. She is 39 1/2 inches tall so 5Ts are all huge on her. I was absolutely thrilled when I saw the Crazy 8 size chart that said 4Ts are for up to 42 pounds. I was even more thrilled when I read some reviews of the store and saw that some people were complaining that the clothes were "too big" and not "true to size". Well, they are true to my DDs size!!! I can't wait to get home tonight and let DD take a look (very picky about what she wears) and place our 1st Order.
