What does riff-raff mean to you?

You have got to be kidding. A lower socio-economic status makes someone riff raff. How can you judge someone by how much they can afford to spend on a hotel room. Of course some people just stay at POP because they love the theming. We always stay at the GF but my kids would love to stay at the POP! Where do you stay?

When I used the term "riff-raff" in my original post, I was trying to single out people who could not afford to stay anywhere else.

So in which class does that place the families that (gasp!) choose to camp at WDW? I'm hoping that the quote above was merely a very poor choice of words... because people who think like the quoted poster are the ones I will most want to be avoiding on my vacation! :sad2:

I agree...I have met some very wealthy people with absolutely no class or respect for others, and they thing they are better than everyone else just because they have money....so wrong!! They behaved like complete "riff raff"!

I have also met some very poor people who have a heart of gold and a whole lot more class and are very respectful and hard working. Your pocket book has nothing to do with being or not being "riff raff".

It is all about the person and what is inside that counts...ALWAYS!!! It's so sad that a lot of folks are focusing on material things rather than people and the good in them regardless of how much money they have.

Just my two cents :wave2:

Riff-Raff: those persons with the general attitude that their own needs and desires always supersede the needs and comforts of other (whether through ignorance, or outright selfishness). It belongs to anyone who does not consider how their behavior weighs upon the comfort and...feelings..of others. If one cannot be polite and considerate, they're "trash" at any socioeconomic level.

I cannot think of a better way to say what we are all thinking.

riff-raff: you know, people you look at and think to yourself, "I wish they weren't here."

people who think they are allowed to smoke under the non-smoking sign.

people who allow their kids to run wild, and think that you are in THEIR way.

less educated people

people who don't bus their trays in the food court

etc, etc, etc.

Exactly that and more... people who swear loudly all the frigging time

The ones getting drunk and carrying on around the pool, endangering others

The ones who take your saved seat (or plop their children) in the middle of your family in front row and refuse to move

etc, etc, etc.

::yes::

BTW, I can't even beleive this discussion is happening on a Disney related board :sad2:

Another thing - I don't think you can really know how much money a person has just by looking at them. I read a quote by a wealthy man once that he "doesn't wear a big hat but has a lot of cattle". One of the wealthiest men in our town subscribes to this, he drives a beat up old truck and quietly owns most the commercial real estate in our area. I've learned that if you've got a lot of money you should do your best to NOT display it (I don't mean by acting poorly but not showing your wealth overtly) because someone is trying harder to take it from you! When people know you're wealthy try getting a quote on some work or buy some property - the price goes up! Hey, ya know the story about Walt Disney quietly buying up property in Florida?

Sometimes the people most into material things have the least $$ 'cause they spent it all on those things!

So anyway, you really can't tell by just looking.

OH! I get it now!!!! Thanks for clearing that up.....and basically classifying your own self as riff-raff....because I wish egotistical snobbish people like you weren't here. Hey baby, you're riff-raff with the rest of us!

How true this can be. Our friend's parents how live here all winter in a multi million dollar home drives a used car and she dresses in tee shirts and clothes from Target. Half the time the shirts are on the older side and not in the best shape and if you saw her you may think she was riff-raff. Funny thing is she's worth $45 million! There's a lot of wealth down here in Naples and my husband works for a trust company and that is their client base. He sometimes laughs when he sees what they dress in, they're all so comfortable and could care less if they look like they have money. He's got one client who worth about $80 million and he drives a normal car, lives in a normal house and dresses in regular clothes from the mall!

When I was growing up (inner city childhood--went to a Public Parachoial private school)..since then I have moved out into the suburbs in a (how should I say this) a "very" nice neighborhood....I am getting to the point...we did not have alot of money growing up as kids, but my parents sent us to good schools...Having said that...we, too are spending a few days at POP and I DO NOT consider myself "riff-raff"...Riff-Raff (in our household) always referred to people (kids, teens, adults, alike) who were looking for trouble or to wanting to start trouble....just not nice people....had nothing to do with how much money or how little money someone had...I know alot of families who are quite wealthy and their children are "riff-raff"....no offense taken..really

But to go further...

I cannot believe this post. I highly doubt only the poor folk smoke under a non smoking sign, I don't have a post secondary education and I respect rules, clean up after myself and can also afford to stay at a resort other than value. I take it that you do not consider yourself riff raff. Thank goodness all of us who are staying at value resorts this year won't run into you. Imagine if someone like me were standing in line in front of you, should I move to the back? I can think of people who have a abundant supply of money who do the things you've mentioned as well a people who don't. How fortunate for you that the riff raff can't afford deluxe.

Oops, hit a nerve here. Tennessee probably has a larger proportion of riff-raff in comparison to other states, like say Idaho or Maine.

You know, I really thought when you started this nonsense yersterday that you would come back on the boards to say you had misspoken. The fact that you have continued to defend such a stupid statement with even more ignorance just validates the fact that you, too, are riff-raff.

Show me one place where I claimed not to be riff-raff.
