I am going for an interview today at Old Navy and I'm not sure what is appropriate to wear. The position is not in the office, but in the retail store. If I were applying for an office job, I'd be all set and wear something business-like. Should I do the same for a clerk position in a retail store? Does it matter? HELP!!

Something from Old Navy??!!??!! :rotfl: Sorry, I really don't know. I figure it is better to be more overdressed than to be underdressed. Perhaps business casual??!!??!! I am interested in what others have to say.

Old Navy clothes? Sorry, I couldn't resist.

I would dress business casual. When I interviewed for the grocery store I wore nice slacks and a blouse. I see all the range in outfits when people come in for interviews, including shorts and flip flops.

edited to add...Miss Jasmine we think a like! :teeth:

I would say at least one item from Old Navy if you can do that. The sales clerks there aren't usually dressed up, so I don't think you have to go overboard.

nice khakis, a wrinkle free shirt tucked in with a belt, scuff free shoes....

Business casual- don't think a proper suit is right for that type of a position. I would say khakis and a nice blouse. JMO

Tailored dress pants, a jacket, (both in black) and a white blouse is what I would wear. You can never go wrong with the tailored pant suit, and you can never go wrong with black and white.

I should have figured I get that response!!! I actually would wear clothes from Old Navy IF I could fit into them!! Seriously, all the pants are so low cut, people like me (having had 3 kids) should not wear them ~ they are not flattering!!! If I did, I would guarantee myself I would not get the job, lol! I guess I will go with slacks and a nice top, although I would love to show up in my usual, shorts and flip flops...it's hot here today!

well, at least make them Old Navy flip flops :rotfl2:

I agree about the pants. They definately aren't thinking of us Moms with 3 kids when they design those things.

::yes::

I was shopping at Old Navy once with my daughter and she noticed they were hiring so we went to the GM and asked for an application. She said that DD was too young but would I like a job!!! LOL

I accepted the job but agreed to only work during Chirstmas rush. I had on some nice pants and a top at the time.

Most kids that came in and applied had on jeans.

Oh and BTW they offered me some really low amount and I asked if that was negotiable and they said no. I said I would take a pass and not accept the job. They then asked me what I would like to make and I said I would do it for 3 dollars more an hour and they said OK!

I would wear business casual. Khakis, light jacket, oxford top. Not a full business suit but not jeans and a tshirt either.

=)

You probably will be asked to wear Old Navy clothing on the job - I worked for the Gap in college, and we were strongly encouraged to dress head to toe in Gap clothing. In fact, we got a MASSIVE discount on all the new lines, so we could wear it.

I figured as much...I wouldn't mind buying some pants to wear to work there...I'm sure I could find something that would be okay for work. I just never wanted to spend my money on pants that I wasn't crazy about. The discount sure would be nice!

My 17yo SIL just got a job there. She wore dressy khaki pants and a nice shirt with pumps to her interview (no old navy clothes).

FYI: Employees are not normally allowed to wear flip flops, only during certain promotions/sales.

your uniform will be an old navy blue shirt that you have to buy. (These are not sold to the public) You can choose either a navy Polo or sweatshirt. I bought both.

As for pants you do not have to wear old navy pants. They ask that you wear black, blue, or khaki colored pants or jeans. I bought all 3 at Target when they had a sale.

Most wear blue jeans.

A nice, clean suit (plain) with a solid colored or white tailored shirt and good shoes (small heel). It is appropriate for any interview (casual or formal).

thanks everyone! I just got home and I ended up wearing nice tan slacks with a blue button down collared top and black boots. They will let me know if I got the job in a few days.

The people I saw working there were mostly wearing jeans, capris or shorts, Old Navy shirts (the ones they sell in the store, not staff shirts) and flip flops...very casual. We did not get in to the dress code or anything....I figured I would cross that bridge when/if I get to it.
