digital single lens reflex camera..basically you can interchange the lenses on that type of camera where as a point and shoot type camera you can't..usually a dslr gives more options with shutter speed and size by using different lenses so you have more control over the final photo, ie can get better low light photos, ability to take consecutive photos faster for sports etc. you also have to ability to get better photos as i think usually the lenses are better quality, not that point and shoot camera haven't come a long way in image quality.

The main thing that makes a camera a SLR or DSLR is that you look through the view finder and see through the lens. It uses mirrors that drop down when the shutter is open to do this. This is why when you use a DSLR you don't have movie modes and you can't shoot using the LCD screen. This is also why when the shutter is open the view finder is black.

to husband it means an easy way to buy anniversary gifts... to me it means no more dish drainers and electric knives as anniversary gifts ( his worse 2 as he freely admits)
