What do you use for "white noise"?

I'm looking for something in DS2's room for "white noise". His room is right outside the kitchen and I've noticed it's taking him longer and longer to get to sleep at night while listening to DH & I up and around. Also hoping it'll help him sleep later in the morning (wishful thinking!).
I've used a humidifier before, and that worked great, but the room is always stinky/funky smelling the next morning.

Any suggestions?? Cheaper the better!! ;)

I use a box fan. If I don't want the air blowing on me, I turn it away from me. I need white noise or I can't fall asleep.

We placed a six gallon aquarium with filter in our son's room. He could watch the fish as he drifted off to sleep.

fan, air conditioner, tv, music. and yes. all at once. sometimes silence is just too loud.

I find a medium sized fan (I got mine from Target) works best. I don't like the fan blowing on me so I turn it away from me and just use it for the sound.

We use fans. Sometimes hard to find a noisy one, now, with the big push being "quiet" fans...........but we just find one that blows nice and hard. Everyone in our house has their own fan at night.

I hear those are VERY relaxing. I've read that if you have children who don't sleep well, to get them an aquarium.

A small desk/table size fan should work. I wouldn't face it toward him though. The inexpensive ones at Walmart are under ten dollars. These seem to make more noise than the high priced ones. :)

I think I'm the only one on this thread who actually points the fan towards myself. I've got a fan that is about three feet from my head, and my feet are next to the window of my room, where I have an air conditioner (we don't have central heat and air)

I used a small fan turned away from me for years until it fell apart. Then I bought a noise machine from ABC Distributing for about $15. I have been using it for about 4-5 years. It has white noise, ocean, water, rainforest, and several others but I use the white noise. It does drive DH bonkers though.

I need to have a loud fan or the air conditioner. We lose power a lot in my neighborhood - if it happens at night and I am in a dead sleep - I will wake up INSTANTLY. DH thinks I am crazy but silence startles me :)

We all use fans. DH though I was nuts when we first got married, but now he is a firm believer in the fan. We have it pointed towards us in the summer, but away during the winter. Both to the kids have their fans in their doorway, blowing out into the hall. If they say they are hot, will let it blow into their room, but not at them. Tried ceiling fans, but they don't make enough noise.

And if the power goes off in the middle of the night, everybody wakes up. I know instantly when the power goes off.

I use a nature-type sound machine (on the ocean setting) with the volume turned up all the way; that drowns out pretty much everything, including my incredibly noisy, completely inconsiderate neighbors. I bought it at Walgreens something like 9 years ago, have used it every night since, and have never had a problem with it. It's probably my most prized possession at this point. :sunny:

My parents use a small fan that they set on the floor (Dad snores and it drives Mom crazy). We use an air purifier turned up and it works well. I had never used anything for white noise until I married DH (the air purifier is his) and now I can't sleep without it!

normally, if I'm in a big room and its quiet, I can't sleep. a smaller room I can usually make enough noise to let myself go to sleep. I don't like it when you hodl your breath and there is absolutly no sound at all. It feels like I'm suffocating. If I'm at a computer I have to play music or type. computers just don't make enough noise for me.

BROOKSTONE has Sound Machines and they are awesome!! Also SHARPER IMAGE!! I think they are called something like SOUND SENSATION. DH & I have one in our room and my DS has one in his room. THEY ARE AWESOME!!!

You can select up to like 10 different sounds..ocean, rainforest, lake, stream, harbor, city, train, bells, even WHITE NOISE is one of the selections.

They run about $50.00. WELL WORTH IT!! :thumbsup2

You've come to the right place. I am the white noise queen.

Our Ds's room backs up to the kitchen and there is always noise going on, keeping him up.

1) We use a fluerescent(sp?) light in the kitchen which has a nice steady hum.
2) We set up a fish tank with a filter that also has a nice steady hum.
3) I bought a lava lamp that acts as a night light and gives off this crazy little whooshing noise.
4) We let him fall asleep (non school nights :teeth: ) to his tv on very low (like one bar).
5) I let him sleep with the snoring dog. She's so loud, she drowns out every other noise in the house.

I can't sleep in complete silence. I have a box fan that has a hum to it.

DS sleeps with his music on very low. That seems to help him.

We have 2 very loud, snoring dogs. They sleep in DD's room.
