My ds19 has been seeing a chiro doc after a car accident for treatment, in addition to seeing an md for pain management, MRI testing, ect. He has been going to the chiropractor for almost 6 weeks with only a marginal improvement in his pain level. The md has given him pain and muscle relaxers. The chiro dr. indicates that he will be going to him for 18 months, the md said if significant improvement isnt achieved after 10 chiropractic visits that it is doing nothing. The MD said that neck sprain/strain/whiplash can take months to heal with or without therapy. I dont know what to think.
Today the chiropractor put him in a neck traction sort of device. DS said it felt fine but now about 6 hours later is complaining that his neck pain has intensified.
What experience have others had with this type of treatment.

My Mom didn't want to believe in the stuff...she has an excellent chiropractor though. He has fixed her backaches, headaches, allergies, throat. She has recently been to him because she lost her voice and hasn't had it for two weeks! (She is a band teacher that never quits and only missed one day of school...I think she should have taken it easier on her voice....ANYWAY..) She went to him just today and he adjusted her "cranial nerve" and she has a 50% improvment already. I think some people have luck with it and others don't. She may also just have a great Chiropractor...I don't know. I'm a believer though!!

We all see chiropractors around here, the kids have a great one, I like mine and he does a good job, DH thinks they're nuts but it helps his headaches so who knows.

I've been seeing them since birth, my dad is a chiropractor :teeth:

Every once in a while I move something I shouldn't and my back will go out. I used to suffer with it for a week or more. Now I go right to the chiropractor and in a day or two I'm doing much better. They use some sort of gadget that sends heat and small electrical waves into your back. At first it feels very strange but then you get used to it and it relaxes you so much you almost go to sleep! :)

I do not think highly of the chiropratic philosophy. I would suggest that your son request to be seen by a physical therapist. His doctor can give him a 'script' to be evaluated. While a chiroprator will want to keep your son in his office for as long as possible, a PT will evaluate the problem and work toward your son getting well as quickly as possible. Good Luck.

My kids and I all go, but I think that it is all in WHO you see. Every Chiro has their own technique, and one may do more than another.

Couldn't agree more. My dad's a PT, so maybe that's why I have a poor opinion of chiropractors, but a PTs goal seems to be to get you better as quickly as possible, whereas chiropractors seem to go for the quick fix over a long period of time. Just my opinon...

My husband has gone to a couple for back pain, but the treatments only relieve the pain for a few hours, and he's never completely cured. My opinion- it's nice to get a little back rub, but it's not really medicine.

I don't doubt that Chiropractors can relieve pain. However, I will NEVER go to a chiropractor. I think that their techniques are dangerous even though they may temporarily relieve pain. I am way too fond of my spinal cord to have it adjusted and/or popped for a quick fix. I am no medical genius or anything but I do know enough to laugh at and easily refute some of the explanations that chiropractors have told my friends in explanation for their aches and pains. For instance, one friend has this recurrent knot in his back just ablve his hip. His chiropractor told him that the knot itself was a group of swollen nerve endings---they are swollen because of all of the impurities in his body. HA! If that knot were swollen nerve endings, not only would he be unable to walk, it would REALLY hurt to massage it (which he says makes it feel better). I finally convinced him to go to a real doctor. He says the the knot is caused from a muscle spasm. He now does the prescribed exercises every day and has some mild muscle relaxers that he can if needed. Go figure......they're not needed. I don't know how much time and money this poor guy has spent with continuous back problems in chiropractors offices!!! Ironically, he still believes in chiropractors though. :earseek:

I'm confused.

I guess I meant they do a quick fix one day, but that quick fix doesn't last, making patients go back for long periods of time.....it's late....hopefully, that makes sense.

I had an auto accident and had terrible whiplash from it. The MDs wanted to put me on powerful painkillers that I did not want to take. So, I tried the chiropractor. It ended up being a very negative, expensive experience that really did not help at all. What DID help, however, was massage therapy.

Not a fan. Hubby had a really bad experience, that was only taken care of once he went to an ortho.

I always wonder when people tell me how much they love their chiro's and how they have "fixed them up", why they all have to keep going back. Couldn't be for the bucks, could it?

Not a fan at ALL...tried it and every time it seems more like a scam than anything..the "ok, you will have to come 4 times a week" and then they never want you to stop coming...sure, if someone was paying me four times a week I wouldn't want htme to stop coming either! I tried different ones too and they all were the same way...I would never take my child to one thats for sure, all that bone cracking can not possibly be good for their future health. What really gets me are the ones that say they can cure asthma or cancer or any disease like that, what a bunch of bull.

What do I think? I think its a pain in the neck! :rotfl:

I have had some pretty nasty headaches and been unable to turn my neck as much as I should. So, went to a chiro. It was just okay. I didn't see much of an improvement. And I wasn't crazy about his 'bedside' manner..kind of twist, snap, $30 please, bye bye. So, I stopped going. But the headaches got really intense over the summer. The thing is...my last visit with that guy, he had someone fill in for him. This 'fill-in' person did most of the same stuff but also noted some pretty decent knots in my neck, shoulders and upper back and really worked them. Well, that made a huge difference. So, when the headaches and neck stiffness got really bad, I went to a different chiro in town...very highly recommended. I was just going to have some therapeutic massage but wanted to check out the chiro herself. What a difference. She talked to me about my lifestyle, any meds I take, any other physical symptons I might have. And then she set to work. Not the most pleasant thing in the world, but.....after two months of going twice a week and getting a massage once a week, the headaches were gone, my neck could turn and didn't hurt. Well, two weeks ago I got sick and had to cancel my appt. I had been going once a week and getting adjusted and having a massage. Then I didn't get back on track and guess what??? The headaches and neck pains are all back!!! That once a week visit was getting it done. So, back I go. I'm going to try the chiro once a week and the massage every other week and see how that goes.
All I can say is I can't believe the difference between the two chiros. And they were married at one time!!! But she is personable and friendly and takes more time with you. It really does matter who you see. BTW....I had xrays and all sorts of doctor visits for those headaches and they just kept telling me it was stress. Well, duh, I knew that.....what can I do about them. Their answer was try for less stress.

I think going to a chiropractor is like putting Band-Aid on a cut with no Neosporin on the wound. Just covers up the problem but doesn't help it heal/

I guess I am in the minority on this thread....I had very good results with a chiropractor. I have a herniated disc in my back....have had it since high school. some days the pain got so excruciating I could barely walk. The md just kept giving me pain killers and muscle relaxers....yeah, like I could actually function on that!!!! So, on a whim, I go to a chiropractor...I can't say that I got immediate results that day, but after three weeks of going twice a week....the pain was gone. That was 5 years ago! I have had two recurrences where I have gone in for ONE adjustment, and the pain went away. sure, do they say I need to come in for routine adjustments...absolutely....do I? Nope. and I swear that went I was going in that first instance routinely, it was helping my asthma and breathing patterns....I have used my inhaler considerably less!

I do think it depends on who you go to....I didn't care for one chiro in the practice, so I avoided him and went to another and his technique and style were much better for me. and I have to say....when I would get the adjustment...it felt ssssssoooooo good!!!!!!
