What do you think about a "plus-size" gal wearing strapless?

My mom always told me that no one can see the size of the dress, but everyone can see if it's too tight. Just be sure to get one that fits and in a style that flatters, and you'll look absolutely beautiful! Just try on dresses with and without straps/sleeves to see what you feel the most comfortable in. Also, many plus sized brides are wearing strapless these days and looking gorgeous!
My mom used to say the same thing - no one can see the number on the tag but they will all see if it's too tight. As for deciding before you try, you just never know - I thought I wanted a gown covered in lace, but when I tried on a couple like that I just laughed at how ridiculous I looked! I never thought I'd go for a traditional gown with a semi-cathedral train, but it looked best on me and it fit perfectly. I specifically did not want strapless, just a personal thing, but I remember my consultant at my bridal salon saying that strapless flatters everyone - skinny, larger, flat chested, large chested - it looks good on every figure type. So try, try, try and you will find the perfect gown!

I had the same problem in my search for the "perfect" dress. I went to David's in person, they have quite a large selection in plus size that you can actually try on and zip. I went to a few other stores where you could try the dress on in a smaller size and order it in your size...non-refundable of course. I liked the selection at David's. I ultimately went with a halter top. I was too concerned with keeping it up while dancing. :rotfl2:

im personally not a fan of strapless dresses period.

but this is your day, try one on & bring some honest people with you. if you feel beautiful thats what counts though.

There is nothing wrong with going strapless - regardless of size!

As a general rule though here's some tips for plus size gowns:

-if you opt for straps get wider ones. Straps should be in proportion to the body or the dress will (usually) look odd.
-if at all possible, do a corset back. The reason is that it can be adjusted exactly on the day of your wedding so that everything is snug but there is no "hang over" at the top of the dress in the back and sides.
-go for slightly higher under the armpits for the same reason as above
-and above all, find the dress that makes you feel beautiful, regardless of anything else. You being happy with shine through and that will be the number one thing making that dress look great on you! :sunny:

I'm a little more picky than the other posters, I think I'm "pushing it" in a strapless dress and I'm not what you'd consider big - yet I'm a bit self conscious about it. I think if you have very big arms - something that has a sleeve would be appropriate. You don't want to be thinking about what other people are thinking about you in the dress and that seems to be a concern for you. HTH!

I am not exactly light as a feather....but you can see how my strapless dress turned out. I think it really dpends on the cut the of dress and how they take it in. It definately gave me an hour glass figure! Also, it was a must have for a potentially warm day!

If that's you in your signature picture then you have NOTHING to be worried about at all! You would deffinately NOT be "pushing it" wearing a strapless gown!!

Oh thank you! That is me :) I'm so obsessed about my arms. But since the wedding is a week away and there's not much I can do at this point, I appreciate the kind words!!

My wedding is a week away too!! September 30th! :) And I'm wearing a strapless dress too :) I'm so excited... and I can't believe it's only 10ish days away.... eek!

But, I decided to have a bolero jacket made to cover my arms. I felt wonderful and that was all that mattered. Good luck!

Hi Katie - I'm psyched too! Are you getting married in Disney?
Sadly, no.... we're getting married in my hometown in Delaware (which is exciting, too!) :) Our ceremony is in the church a block away from my parent's house! We'll be honeymooning in Disney from Oct 2-Oct 9 and then in Daytona until the 14th. I can't wait to wear my Minnie bride ears! :bride:

And you look wonderful too! Plus that's a great idea about the bolero jacket - I'm no good with wraps or shawls so would be perfect for me. I'm just starting to think about planning our VR in 2008 and I had initially thought to play it safe with a shift dress. Reading this thread has really inspired me to go for it! Our original wedding was such a downbeat civil affair - no bells and whistles - so maybe we should pull out all the stops!

To those of you getting married soon, best wishes...

Katie - it will be a magical day! I've never been to a wedding I didn't love. :) I can't wait to wear the ears either. When I put them on at my shower there was literally a roar through the crowd and then cheering LOL It was an experience I will never forget!

My dress is strapless and I run anywhere from an 18-24 depending on the day and the clothes. The main thing I was concerned with is making sure the dress and undergarmets push everything down and in vs. up and out. ;)

It all depends on YOU! You could be MISS USA with the most perfect figure and if you do not feel great in that gown then you will be self conscious, so do not let anyone tell you what you should wear- select the gown that you feel you look the best in and are the most comfortable in. I worked in a bridal shop for 7 years and I honestly belive that you need the pick what makes YOU feel great!
