What do you take for your Migraines?

I went to bed with a migraine last nite and woke up with it in full force at 6am. Ugh. So far today I have had 3 Excedrin Migraine, 3 Motrin and a Phenergan, a Pepsi and some iced tea and the headache is still hovering. The Phenergan made me so tired that it was hard to stay awake!

I called my Dr but he is gone for the weekend and his partners wouldn't call me anything in. :headache:

On another note - DH got his Scientific American magazine in the mail today and it had an article on the cover about migraines - has anyone read that?

Try laying down with some ice packs -- one behind your neck and one over your eyes.

Also, if you have some Tylenol PM, you might want to take some of that tonight before you go to bed. I haven't been sleeping well, so I took some last night and woke up with "just" a migraine this morning instead of my usual exploding head, so it must have done something! I'll be taking it again tonight.

I hope you feel better!

After having tried countless prescription migraine medications, I decided to work harder to stop the migraines before they started by motifying my diet, getting more sleep and avoiding stress. Easier said than done, I know, but it's worked for me. I know get migraines maybe once or twice a month, and if I take Advil Migraine at the first hint of one, 95% of the time it stops it.

I've never heard of Advil Migraine. DH takes Excederine Migraine.........might need to try it!

I have tried lots of things. Imitrex (made me feel like I was having a heart attack), another med - can't remember, all of your basic OTC meds, Topomax- which worked very well, but I don't want to deal with the side effects anymore. Also ended up in the Er several times, at which point they'd giveme a shot of Demmorhal (sp?) and knock me out. The last time, though, I still had the headache. :sad2:

Right now I take Maxalt as needed and it does a GREAT job- I feel depleted after I take one, but not sleepy (does that make sense?). I have to take it as SOON as I feel it coming on.

And re: pregnancy- I did not have a single migraine the entire time I was pregnant. I threw up so much I ended up with a feeding tube, but I didn't have a headache!! :rotfl:

Thanks. I woke up this morning and still have it. I'm up to 5 Excedrin and 6 Motrin to knock this one out (spread over 24 hours). I am starting to feel a little better now.

I was the same way during pregnancy - once my hormone levels stabilized in the first trimester I was practically migraine free the rest of the pregnancy BUT I had hyperemesis with my youngest 2 so I puked non-stop. Blech!

After I had DS my migraines returned with a vengance and I couldn't take anything stronger than Tylenol (like that helped) since I was nursing.

I am going to ask my Dr about Maxalt. Seems like many people on this thread have been helped by that one and it doesn't knock them out - just what I need.

Well thank goodness you didn't have migraines then! Small miracle, huh?

I battled migraines beginning in 2007 and then in March of this year I had one that would not go away, I was maxing out on Dilaudid and many other pain meds with no relief. I was sent to the Michigan Head Pain and Neurological Institute, they hospitalized me for 8 days and found a combination of medicines to prevent my migraines as well and to abort them when they do happen. They also teach you other ways to cope with the pain.

Currently I take: magnesium, Citalopram, topamax and Doxepin as preventatives and I take norflex and Tordol as abortives.

Does anyone else feel like they are in a "fog" the day after a migraine? My head finally stopped pounding but all day I have felt funky and have a hard time concentrating - like it literally hurts my brain to "think".

It takes about a day of feeling all out of sorts for me to recover from a bad migraine.
