What do you pay for afterschool care if you have to pay????

I am a bit shocked.

There is a chance I will work next school year but I would work at the high school and it gets out 1.5 hours after the elem. school. I have kids in elem. who would need afterschool care.

On-site after school care is $60 per week per child. For 2 children that is almost $500 per month! I also have a preschooler who will need full time childcare/preschool for an additional $700 or so per month.

This is the same amount I had to pay in CA but in CA I also made $25K more per year than I would make here!

Four years ago I paid $70 a week for after school care. The worse part was that my daughter got out of school at 3pm, got the after school place around 3:30pm and my husband got out of work at 4pm. So I was paying $70 a week for about 5 hours of care. Sometimes it was 3 hours because my husband works a 4 day on, 2 day off schedule so sometimes she was only there 3 days a week.

When I did the after care program at a school district, they charged $3.50 for the first hour after school, and I think $2.25 per hour after that. There was also a $15 or $20 non-refundable registration fee per child. I quit in 2003, so I imagine fees have gone up a bit.

The program I worked at previously was more expensive- it was a flat $10 for after school no matter how long the child stayed. I thought that was unfair to those who only needed an hour or two of care. And that was in 1995/6, I'm sure it's gone up since then.

I charge 50 $ for b4 and after. Regardless of the amount of hours ( I close at 5) I charge that because it takes up a day care slot.

Here in PA, my daycare provides b4 & after school care for $78/wk/child. It is $22/wk/child for just b4 or just after school care. For delays/early dismissals there is an extra charge of $16/hr/child. There is a charge for snow days too, but, I forget what that is.

The first child is full price there and the second is half price, so when DD went full time for $35.00 per day DS received his "school age kid" care for $3.00 per hour. Once they started school my children only required 1.5 hours per day (half hour am and 1 hour pm). It was a good chunk out of my pay, but what can you do? You need to know that the provider will be there and not cancel on you, take the kids on those dreadful halfdays, and keep them safe and warm in case school closes for an emergency. Now we don't need a care program as DD is in MS and DS is in HS, and I sure do not miss paying for it! FOr a while my total was $600 per month--about a third of what I brought in in income, but I knew that "this too would pass" .

Our aftercare program doesn't operate on half days, snow days, or vacation days. They have a summer program that is super expensive that runs 3 hours a day. It's really stupid because obviously the people utlizing the program are working parents who need childcare everyday.

I'm in WV.
Our afterschool care (at the school) is $10/day or $150/month per child. They do not offer before school care or care on snowdays, early release etc.
They are open until 6:00pm and offer a snack.

My DS's daycare/preschool does before and after care, which he will attend next year. It is going to 5.75 per hour. Min of 1/2 an hour in the am and $10 in the afternoon. I will be getting a 20% discount on him, as DS#2 will be starting there in April...and you get 20% off 2nd, 3rd, etc child that goes there.

Currently ,I pay for dd 11 before school care at her school(onsite). I pay $63.00/month . I can drop her off at 7:30 am and school starts at 9:00 am. After-school care at the same after school program is similarly priced!

Actually, it sounds like I may be getting a great deal from the sounds of what everyone else is paying!

For 2 children, we pay $570 per month. They spent 5 minutes in the morning and then ride the daycare van to school. They ride the daycare van back after school, and I pick them up about 20 minutes after they get there. So, this is for a total of about 30 minutes at the daycare each day and transportation to/from school. Yes, it's definitely a lot for the amount of time they're there, but I occasionally have to work late or run an errand after work, and then they spend a bit longer there. I think we'll pay about $700/month for them this Summer, so at least it doesn't go up dramatically when they are there all day.

after school care. The care is provided by the school board at the school. We are lucky. We are only charged for the hours we use in 15 minute increments. Of course, it was $50 for 20 hrs when my ds started K in 2003. They have a snack for them, and the first 45 minutes is snack and homework time. After that, it is free play. It closes at 6.

I run a before school program at our elementary school. We charge $6/day - payable monthly. We open at 7:30 a.m. and school starts at 9:30 a.m. We close on vacation days and snow days, but are open on delayed opening days. Next year we will start an after school program, but not sure what the charge will be.

Our Boys & Girls club is fabulous. It's $25 to register for the year, which includes after school care until 6:30 pm if needed. Not only that, but our school busses bring the kids directly to the club from school. They just announced that they will have to increase the fee to $40 per year coming up for the next fiscal year (Aug 31), but still a bargain any way you slice it. I haven't needed before-school care, but I know they offer it and they drive the kids to school in their vans. If they charge for that, it may be $5 or so. DD10 hasn't needed to go to the club since I get home in time for her to get off the bus, but she does attend a couple of days a week to take enrichment classes (mostly in theater) which do cost extra (anywhere from $30-50 for a six week session). This is purely by choice however. There are plenty of activities for kids after school without having to purchase the enrichment classes. We're truly lucky to have a brand new club near my house where the kids have a place to drop in and have fun.

I provided after school care for a year and charged $15 per day per child, this was back around 2000. They had to picked up by 7 and I was at their house! A pain in the rear end. Sometimes with a little brother for no extra pay. I did have 3 girls though so that helped a bit, all lived on the same street, went from house to house in rotation.
