What do you miss that we "don't" have anymore?

There's an original A&W in California in the downtown area in the city.
There's also a stand alone, order from your car kind in Kissimmee. There in the Super Target plaza at 535&192. You can tell it's newer than the ones that's have been around for generations.

The Swap Shop in Miami was the place to go for drive in. I believe they still have it running.

I miss going to the Hollywood Race Track on Saturdays for the "free concert" with 3$ bet ticket. Only once did we walk out with more than what we walked in with. But they usually had 80's bands there, and then we'd go watch a couple of the horse races. Shortly after we moved to Central FL, they tore down the old track and made it into this huge multi million dollar complex, and no more free saturday concerts.

1950's when avg income was $3,200., houses cost $14,000, cars $1,500., gas .20 gal and a stamp .03.!!!!!
The house I grew up in was built in 1952, my grandparents being the only owners for 50 years. I believe it was originally bought for around $12,000 and sold for $148,000 in 2003.

I loved Zodys, Gemco, and does any one remember pup n taco? Oh boy all the old memories. Jo

We still have (in NJ) Friendly's, Roy Rogers, ice cream trucks and Sky Bars :)

I miss being able to have a conversation without someone picking up a cell phone or sending a text in the middle of a party/dinner/conversation.

I miss people getting "dressed" to go places. It seems we've hit an all time low with "casual" clothes!

I miss Pudding Pops and Crystal Pepsi!

When did this happen? I live in Sac, YIkes. Maybe I need to google that. Jo

in 1972-there were red flags about the construction of the place, esp. their signage but it was ignored.

anyone remember shakeys pizza parlours-we loved these as kids becuase there was a glass window in front of the area where the pizzas were made, and a bench for us kids to stand on and watch the process.

i had not seen or heard of one in years until recently when when opened up in spokane.

drive in's:love: gosh i loved them. we had 3 nearby. 2 were in undeveloped areas, but one was lost to a condo development and the other to a mobile home park. the 3rd was THE BEST-it was at an intersection where the other 3 corners housed cemetaries (so no lights from neighboring properties). it was THE location to go see the latest horror flicks with a date.

in highschool in napa ca. i worked at what was the last drive in within the city limits-one of the last movies i recall seeing was a re-release of sleeping beauty:love:

the last drive in movie theatre i've been to is still in existence in concord california. it's an oldie and located near a private airport (so it was'nt unusual to see low flying plane come over the screen) but dang it was fun.

Oh, Shakey's!!!!!!!!!!!! we had one when I was a kid. Now the building that had the SHakey's is a "gentlemen's club and that skeeves me out.

And I remember the "fast food"places, you were lucky if you got that once or so a month, know it's an every day thing.

i had a 5th grade math teacher. every year he sent home a note with his students asking their moms, at the end of the school year, to send in all the old christmas catelogs.

these were held onto for the incoming class in the fall of the next school year.

during the month of november, in addition to our regular math exercises, we were given a budget of so many dollars, with which we had to create a christmas shopping budget with. we had to count in our siblings and parents, then figure out what to get them-but take care to figure in the sales tax as well as the shipping and handling (and if you realy budgeted well-the fee for gift wrapping service).

it was a great way to teach us budgeting concepts, and i'm sure some of us pared down our christmas lists to mom and dad when we figure out what some of the stuff we wanted REALY cost.

i miss the old wish books-about the only thing we get similar to it each year is the cabella's catelog (and sorry folks, but flipping through pages of items that assist in dismembering a cousin of one santa's reindeers just does'nt resound with holiday spirit for me).

I loved Zodys, Gemco, and does any one remember pup n taco? Oh boy all the old memories. Jo

Pup n Taco!! My high school bus stop was in front of a Pup n Taco. :thumbsup2

I loved Farrell's too! There was one by my cousin's house and I was so sad when it closed.

I too loved Saturday morning cartoons. We got Land of the Lost on Netflix a few years ago and our kids were hooked! We watched all the seasons. So much more fun than the stupid movie remake.

But what I miss most are teeter totters and merry-go-rounds at schools and the park!

C Ann, aren't you glad you started this thread and now know where o find and A&W (we had them in Michigan) and drive in (oddly both in Michigan and New Hampshire we lived near still functioning drive ins).

Let's see, I miss:

Astro pop lollipops

Radio stations where the DJs picked the music and different DJs played slightly different mixes which represented their tastes and personality.

playgrounds tending to be very unique and not all ordered from what feels like the same one or two companies

REAL Dr. Pepper in glass bottles (served ice cold)

Ok, so I was really young, maybe 4 or 5, so I may have this totally wrong...does anyone remember A&W having telephones at the table where you picked up when you were ready to order and you actually placed your order on the phone?
Are you perhaps thinking of Round the Corner restaurant? We had that in Colorado when I was a kid and I loved ordering on the phone.

Way out here in the boon docks and the one thing we have - during the summer - is an ice cream truck..:thumbsup2

We have one here, too...he usually comes by at least a few evenings a week, usually around 6 pm. I know because that's when I get "Turkey in the Straw" stuck in my head for the next few hours.

And @ the PP who mentioned Charles Chips-- we used to get them from the co-op, way back in the day when I was maybe 8-9 and lived in outer West St. Louis County. We always got those and cases of glass-bottled soda, every flavor imaginable, delivered in a huge truck. Don't remember what else we got--the soda and chips were really what I cared about. Lol. FWIW, you can still get Charles Chips in the big can at Cracker Barrel. The one in Fenton had them the last time I was there. :thumbsup2

Drive-in movies (although I think there's still a few stragglers somewhere)

Up until a few years ago, we had a fabulous drive-in over in Durham. We went a few times -- they'd allow you to bring your own grill and cookout in your spot (as long as you offered the owner something if it smelled good! :goodvibes). They'd pass out glow-sticks to the kids. Wonderful, wonderful place. The owner proudly showed off his enormous, ancient projector to me one time. He passed away suddenly, and I believe the town snatched up the property toot-sweet, because it was prime real estate. I miss it so much!

Charles Chips; they would deliver them to your door and you got to keep the big cannister they came in.

Yes! I remember this -- we loved them as a kid. The big pretzels were fantastic. Loved those tins.

Miss the wish books, too. Shopping online is convenient, but it's nothing like when we were kids, pulling that big catalog onto our laps and going at it with a marker, circling all the things we dreamed about.

I also miss Marathon bars! They just kept going...and going...and going...
(until they stopped, I guess! :rotfl::sad2:)

We still have A&Ws where you park outside and order from your car, still have one drive-in theatre, and still have an ice cream truck on Sundays (of course, we can't afford the ice cream ).
I agree with innocence, Sears christmas catalogs, teeter totters and riding in the back of pickups. Growing up stinks and My kids are missing out on some of the joys of being a kid.

I also miss:
Burger Chef. Cheeseburgers and orange drink were magic in your mouth.
More recently:
My Diet Vanilla Coke and FF Jalapeno Pringles. Why oh why, do these companies get me addicted to their product, then pull them???? (Can you tell I diet. A. Lot.!!! :lmao:)

C.Ann, just have to add, I love all your nostalgia threads.... :worship:

I miss Looney Tunes and how the only time you could watch country music videos was Saturday morning on TNN and only if you got up early. I think CMT has resorted back to that...do they even play music videos anymore? At least GAC does still!

Enjoy reminiscing (sp?)

Sears Wishbooks 1930-1980s

I looked through this last year, so funny, all the toys and things I remember circling as a kid. And how expensive VCRs were when they first came out :lmao:

We have a drive in still here in NJ, I have never been to it b/c I think it was down south, but I'd really like to go one day :goodvibes

I miss good quality TV shows...period. What happened to shows like Full House?

YES!!! I miss TGIF!!! Me, my mom and brother would sit on the couch from 8-10 on fridays and all watch it together as a family, there are not shows on TV that allow that family time anymore.
Full House, Family Matters, Perfect Strangers, the Wonder Years, etc.

and I miss Nick @ Nite and when it aired shows like I Love Lucy, Dick VanDyke, the Munsters, etc.

I miss what we had as children - being able to go outside as soon as it got light outside and coming back at dark. I don't feel safe unless I kept my eyes on my children every minute they were outside.

We still have (in NJ) Friendly's, Roy Rogers, ice cream trucks and Sky Bars :)

I miss being able to have a conversation without someone picking up a cell phone or sending a text in the middle of a party/dinner/conversation.

Lucky you!!! :thumbsup2

Yes, love conversations and lots of visiting! People are so busy trying to make ends meet, other than holidays, there's not much time for good old fashion visiting for no reason.

I don't get texting, IMO so impersonal, what happened to GF/BF listening to listening each other breath on phone.

i had not seen or heard of one in years until recently when when opened up in spokane.

YES, that's the one I was thinking of! Kids loved the singing and looking through window to see pizzas being flipped around! :thumbsup2

Amen, I truly miss when children could walk to neighbor's in same community, school or mall, without worrying about what could happen.

i miss the fall saturday morning cartoon previews. we would look forward to the night each network (just the 3 back then:rotfl:) did their preview of what the cartoon lineup would be.

i miss taco bell's bell burgars (they need to start thinking inside the bun again and bring these back).

i miss stores waiting until AFTER halloween to put out/up any christmas merchandise.
